ADC Nonlinearity Correction for the Majorana Demonstrator

Imperfections in analog-to-digital conversion cannot be ignored when signal digitization requirements demand both wide dynamic range and high resolution, as is the case for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR 76 Ge neutrinoless double beta decay search. Enabling the experiment's high-resolution spectral analysis and efficient pulse shape discrimination required careful measurement and correction of ADC nonlinearites. Here, a simple measurement protocol was developed that did not require sophisticated equipment or lengthy data taking campaigns. A slope-dependent hysteresis was observed and characterized. A correction applied to digitized waveforms prior to signal processing reduced the differential and integral nonlinearites by an order of magnitude, eliminating these as dominant contributions to the systematic energy uncertainty at the double-beta decay Q value.

$$\alpha $$-event characterization and rejection in point-contact HPGe detectors

Abstract P-type point contact (PPC) HPGe detectors are a leading technology for rare event searches due to their excellent energy resolution, low thresholds, and multi-site event rejection capabilities. We have characterized a PPC detector’s response to $$\alpha $$ α particles incident on the sensitive passivated and p $$^+$$ + surfaces, a previously poorly-understood source of background. The detector studied is identical to those in the Majorana Demonstrator experiment, a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) in $$^{76}$$ 76 Ge. $$\alpha $$ α decays on most of the passivated surface exhibit significant energy loss due to charge trapping, with waveforms exhibiting a delayed charge recovery (DCR) signature caused by the slow collection of a fraction of the trapped charge. The DCR is found to be complementary to existing methods of $$\alpha $$ α identification, reliably identifying $$\alpha $$ α background events on the passivated surface of the detector. We demonstrate effective rejection of all surface $$\alpha $$ α events (to within statistical uncertainty) with a loss of only 0.2% of bulk events by combining the DCR discriminator with previously-used methods. The DCR discriminator has been used to reduce the background rate in the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β region of interest window by an order of magnitude in the Majorana Demonstrator and will be used in the upcoming LEGEND-200 experiment.

REopt Lite Geothermal Heat Pump Design Requirements

This document describes the design requirements for the geothermal heat pump (GHP) module being added to the existing REopt Lite web tool. This document describes the purpose, users, and functional requirements to which the modified web tool shall conform. This document will be revised, as required, throughout the development phase with consensus between the Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) and NREL. The GHP module will expand existing REopt Lite capabilities to include techno-economic optimization of GHP systems, either stand alone, or integrated with the other existing technology types, namely solar photovoltaics (PV), wind power, battery energy storage, thermal energy storage, combined hear and power (CHP), and absorption chiller. Included in this submission are links to the REopt Lite web tool and open-source Git-Hub page. The REopt Lite tool can also be accessed directly via the NREL Developer Network. A link is also provided for the REopt report that overviews the module's capabilities.

Rittenhouse et al. 1960s Historical Archived Produced Water Dataset

Around 1960, a private company entered into a research agreement to analyze for dissolved solids in water produced from >800 fields in the U.S. and Canada.. The elemental compositions provided were measured spectrochemically by Rittenhouse et al. The information has been made available to the public as a public service, but the names off of the companies and exact well locations have been removed. The samples are now located at the University of Texas in Austin. More details can be found in the following reference: Gordon Rittenhouse, Robert B. Fulton, Robert J. Grabowski, Joseph L. Bernard, Minor elements in oil-field waters, Chemical Geology, Volume 4, Issues 1–2, 1969, Pages 189-209, ISSN 0009-2541, https://doi.org/10.1016/0009-2541(69)90045-X.

CHARACTERIZATION OF DISSIPATIVE REGIONS OF A N-DOPED SRF CAVITY

We report scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on N-doped cavity hot and cold spot cutouts. Analysis of the electron tunneling spectra using a proximity effect theory shows that hot spots have a reduced superconducting gap and a wider distribution of the contact resistance. Alone, these degraded superconducting properties account for a much weaker excess dissipation as compared with the vortex contribution. Based on the correlation between the quasiparticle density of states and temperature mapping, we suggest that degraded superconducting properties may facilitate vortex nucleation or settling of trapped flux during cooling the cavity through the critical temperature.

Comparative Study of Techno-Economics of Lithium-Ion and Lead-Acid Batteries in Micro-Grids in Sub-Saharan Africa

Microgrids stand to play an important role in expanding electricity access in Sub-Saharan Africa. Batteries, which are often a core element of micro-grids, represent a substantial portion of the capital cost and are therefore an important component of developing sustainable business models for micro-grid deployment. As a result, understanding key considerations for selecting a battery type and operating it effectively are foundational for taking micro-grid growth to scale across the sub-continent. While batteries have been deployed in many systems worldwide over the past few decades, unanswered questions remain on how best to apply them to the context of off-grid micro-grids in Sub-Saharan Africa. Building on analytical work with developers in Sub-Saharan Africa and tools at NREL, this report investigates battery techno-economics and optimal operation in micro-grids, including evaluating criteria to decide between deploying lead acid or lithium-ion batteries, discussing key design considerations for the enclosures that house the batteries, and how to effectively condition the enclosure.

REopt Lite User Manual

REopt Lite evaluates the economic viability of grid-connected solar photovoltaics, wind, combined heat and power, and electric and thermal storage at commercial and small industrial sites. It allows building owners to identify the system sizes and dispatch strategies that minimize the site’s life cycle cost of energy. REopt Lite also estimates the amount of time on-site generation and storage can sustain the site's critical load during a grid outage and allows the user the choice of optimizing for energy resilience. It is primarily used to inform project development decisions and to support research on the factors that drive project feasibility for market development and policy analysis. It is available through a web interface, application programing interface, and open-source code. This user manual provides an overview of the model, including its capabilities and typical applications; inputs and outputs; economic calculations; technology descriptions; and model parameters, variables, and equations. The model is highly flexible and is continually evolving to meet the needs of each analysis. Therefore, this report is not an exhaustive description of all capabilities, but rather a summary of the core components of the model.
