Hydrolysis of Small Oxo/Hydroxo Molecules Containing High Oxidation State Actinides (Th, Pa, U, Np, Pu): A Computational Study

The energetics of hydrolysis reactions for high oxidation states of oxo/hydroxo monomeric actinide species (Th IV O 2 , Pa IV O 2 , U IV O 2 , Pa V O 2 (OH), U V O 2 (OH), U VI O 3 , Np VI O 3 , Np VII O 3 (OH), and Pu VII O 3 (OH)) were calculated at the CCSD(T) level. The first step is the formation of a Lewis acid/base adduct with H 2 O (hydration), followed by a proton transfer to form a dihydroxide molecule (hydrolysis); this process is repeated until all oxo groups are hydrolyzed. The physisorption (hydration) for each H 2 O addition was predicted to be exothermic, ca. -20 kcal/mol. The hydrolysis products are preferred energetically over the hydration products for the +IV and +V oxidation states. The compounds with An VI are a turning point in terms of favoring hydration over hydrolysis. For An VII O 3 (OH), hydration products are preferred, and only two waters can bind; the complete hydrolysis process is now endothermic, and the oxidation state for the An in An(OH) 7 is +VI with two OH groups each having one-half an electron. The natural bond order charges and the reaction energies provide insights into the nature of the hydrolysis/hydration processes. The actinide charges and bond ionicity generally decrease across the period. Here, the ionic character decreases as the oxidation state and coordination number increase so that covalency increases moving to the right in the actinide period.

Prediction of Redox Potentials for Different Oxidation States of U, Np, Pu, and Am in Alkaline Aqueous Solution

The redox potentials for U, Np, Pu, and Am for oxidation states +III up to +VIII in alkaline aqueous solutions were predicted using density functional theory (DFT) and small-core pseudopotentials and their basis sets, with a hybrid explicit/implicit solvent model using SHE = 4.28 V. For each oxidation state, various oxo/hydroxo complexes were evaluated resulting in a variety of one-electron redox pathways. For An(VIII/VII) couples, the predicted redox potentials for the [An(VIII)O 5 (OH)] -3 /[An(VII)O 4 (OH) 2 ] -3 , or [An(VIII)O 4 (OH) 2 ] -2 /[An(VII)O 4 (OH) 2 ] -3 couples are in good agreement with existing estimates. For An(VII/VI) redox couples, all couples, particularly [An(VII)O 4 (OH) 2 ] -3 /[An(VI)O 2 (OH) 4 ] -2 , were in agreement with experimental values for U, Np, and Pu, but the results for Am showed larger differences from the estimated potentials. The An(VI/V) couples were consistent with experiment for dioxo/tetrahydroxo couples, and the An(V/IV) couples showed acceptable agreement based on actinide-specific couples, with neutral hydroxides often favored in the +IV state. The An(IV/III) couples were consistent with literature values when modeled as soluble neutral hydroxides. The use of our approach yielded calculated redox potentials that were within ±0.2 V from experimental or estimated values consistent with our prior calculations on redox potentials of actinides from Ac to Am in acidic aqueous solutions. Finally, as a result, this supports the robustness of our DFT-based methodology for predicting actinide redox potentials, offering valuable insights for actinide chemistry in aqueous solutions.

Reactions of Np(VI) and Pu(VI) with Phenanthroline Result in Bending the [NpVIO2]2+ Unit and a Reduced Pu(V) Species

Despite decades of actinyl chemistry, genuinely bent actinyl structures remain rare beyond uranium. We report the first crystallographic characterization of a bent neptunyl(VI) complex, NpO 2 Cl 2 (phen) 2, along with a linear plutonyl species that, unexpectedly, adopts the +V oxidation state. Coordination of two 1,10-phenanthroline ligands to NpO 2 2+ enforces pronounced bending of the O yl –Np–O yl unit to 162° through steric clashes with the axial phenathroline ligand, representing the sharpest angle reported for any neptunyl(VI) complex. In contrast, synthesis with PuO 2 2+ produces a reduced linear Pu(V) species, PuO 2 Cl(phen) 2, underscoring the redox lability and the reluctance of plutonium to distort. Raman and IR spectra yield the first experimental stretching and interaction force constants for plutonyl(V). Comparison with values for plutonyl(VI) and bent and linear uranyl(VI) and neptunyl(VI) compounds shows that reduction perturbs the actinyl bond more than bending within one oxidation state. Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies clarify phenanthroline binding to Pu(VI) and the system’s reactivity. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that bending is energetically favored in the U–Np–Pu series, but the stabilization energy decreases as the actinide atomic number increases. NBO and QTAIM analyses reveal systematic trends: increasing 5f occupancy and decreasing An–O yl bond covalency from U to Pu. These results demonstrate that ligand-induced bending in neptunyl(VI) species is not only electronically feasible but also synthetically achievable, though plutonyl(VI) is constrained by redox reactivity. This work expands the frontier of nonlinear actinyl chemistry and illuminates how structure, oxidation state, and electronic configuration interrelate across the actinyl series.

Vibrational and electronic properties of Np 2 O 5 from experimental spectroscopy and first principles calculations

High-valence actinide oxides are critical to understanding the behavior of 5f-electrons, yet their structural and electronic properties remain poorly understood due to challenges in synthesis and handling. We report the first Raman spectroscopic study of single-crystalline Np 2 O 5 and the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurement on any neptunium-containing material. Hydrothermally synthesized crystals were structurally verified by X-ray diffraction. Raman spectra revealed sharply resolved vibrational features, including previously unreported low-frequency modes. STS measurements revealed a band gap of 1.5 eV. Density functional theory (DFT) enables vibrational mode assignments, reveals neptunium-dominated low-frequency phonons, oxygen-dominated high-frequency modes, and predicts an indirect band gap of 1.68 eV. This predicted value is in excellent agreement with the experimentally measured STS gap. This combined Raman, DFT, and STS approach provides a robust framework for correlating lattice dynamics and electronic structure in actinide materials, providing benchmark data for Np 2 O 5 , and opening new avenues for probing structure–property relationships in complex f-electron materials.

Analysis of a Bulk 237 Np Oxide Sample for Trace Actinides

A neptunium oxide sample was dissolved and trace actinide constituents were measured by isotope dilution ICP-MS (for 239–244 Pu, 233–238 U, 237 Np, 241–243 Am) and alpha spectrometry ( 238 Pu, 242 Cm, 244 Cm). This material contained significant quantities of transuranic elements, notably americium and curium. The isotopic composition of the material will continue to evolve over time due to radioactive decay; the measurements reported here include all isotopes decay corrected to a reference date of 1/1/2022. These factors may be considerations in criticality studies of the related 237 Np sphere.

Modeling the Influenza A NP-vRNA-Polymerase Complex in Atomic Detail

Seasonal flu is an acute respiratory disease that exacts a massive toll on human populations, healthcare systems and economies. The disease is caused by an enveloped Influenza virus containing eight ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes. Each RNP incorporates multiple copies of nucleoprotein (NP), a fragment of the viral genome (vRNA), and a viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (POL), and is responsible for packaging the viral genome and performing critical functions including replication and transcription. A complete model of an Influenza RNP in atomic detail can elucidate the structural basis for viral genome functions, and identify potential targets for viral therapeutics. In this work we construct a model of a complete Influenza A RNP complex in atomic detail using multiple sources of structural and sequence information and a series of homology-modeling techniques, including a motif-matching fragment assembly method. Our final model provides a rationale for experimentally-observed changes to viral polymerase activity in numerous mutational assays. Further, our model reveals specific interactions between the three primary structural components of the RNP, including potential targets for blocking POL-binding to the NP-vRNA complex. The methods developed in this work open the possibility of elucidating other functionally-relevant atomic-scale interactions in additional RNP structures and other biomolecular complexes.

Resource Analysis of NP Kunta Solar Park Site (White Paper)

India has set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030. Flexibility is key for efficient integration of renewables. The modern-day RE plants are grid-friendly and can also provide this flexibility. A pilot to demonstrate this flexibility by implementing automatic generation control (AGC) at a solar plant is being done by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) under USAID’s Greening the Grid (GTG) Program and Renewable Integration & Sustainable Energy (RISE) initiative. This paper presents the resource variability analysis of the 250-MW NP Kunta solar plant site where the AGC pilot project is being implemented. This paper also demonstrates the use of publicly available resource quality data, which can be utilized by various stakeholders to better understand the variability of any existing or potential RE site in India and possibly increase confidence in decisions or help to understand the impacts that can be expected.

Solid state 59 Co NMR study of a Np(VII) compound

Np(VII) compounds with [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ cations were synthesized and structurally examined using powder X-ray diffraction. Multiple phases were observed, consisting of octahedral [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ cations, discrete tetragonal bipyramidal [NpO 4 (OH) 2 ] 3− anions, and waters of hydration. Electric field gradient tensors at Co sites were measured by solid state 59 Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and compared with theoretical calculations. The relative contributions of the chemical shift and electric field tensors to the NMR lineshape were determined by recording spectra at field strengths of 7.04 and 11.74 Tesla. Further, the evolution of structure and morphology as a function of sample age and the effects on NMR spectral parameters has also been investigated. These results demonstrate the use of NMR at multiple fields to expand understanding of the stability and electronic structure of high valent neptunium compounds.

Plasmonic hybrid core-shell (HyCoS) AgPt NP template hybridized with GQDs for SERS enhancement of 4-MBA and BT

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an attractive vibrational spectroscopic technique that can enable a non-destructive and ultra-sensitive detection down to the single-molecule level. Herein, a novel hybrid SERS platform is developed based on hybrid core-shell (HyCoS) AgPt nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for the enhancement of Raman vibration of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and benzenethiol (BT). The unique design of HyCoS AgPt NPs induces strong electromagnetic mechanism (EM) enhancement through the amplification of electromagnetic fields by the excitation of high-density surface plasmons and hot spots. Superior localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is generated by the AgPt core-shell and background Ag NP coupling, which is systematically investigated by the optical properties and FDTD simulations. The background Ag NPs can further increase the coverage of metallic NPs, leading to higher-density hot spots and enhanced SERS response. At the same time, GQDs can provide plentiful accessible edges for the charge transfer to the HOMO and LUMO of 4-MBA and BT based on the chemical mechanism (CM) enhancement. The mixing approach of GQDs and target molecules on the HyCoS AgPt NPs can significantly amplify the Raman signals via the strong adsorption of probe molecules by the π – π interaction. The enhancement factors of proposed SERS platform can reach ~107 and ~105 for the 4-MBA and BT respectively.

High-precision measurement of U-Pu-Np-Am concentrations and isotope ratios in environmental reference materials by mass spectrometry

Herein, we report results of precise and sensitive mass spectrometric measurements of uranium, plutonium, neptunium, and americium concentrations and isotope ratios in a variety of environmental reference materials. Most of our work has been done on NIST SRM 4350b, River Sediment, but we also present results for NIST SRM 4354, Lake Sediment; NIST SRMs 4355 and 4355a, Peruvian Soil; NIST SRM 4357, Ocean Sediment; NIST SRM 1648a, Urban Particulate Material; NIST SRM 1649b, Urban Dust; IAEA CRM 385, Ocean Sediment; USGS BCR-2, Columbia River Basalt; and USGS BHVO-2, Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory Basalt. These materials reflect a wide range in long-lived actinide concentrations (e.g. 1E4 to 1E10 atoms 239 Pu/g) and isotope ratios. Measurements were performed in a clean laboratory by isotope dilution, multi-collector thermal ionization and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In general, our results are in agreement with, but lower the uncertainty of, literature or certificate values for these reference materials. Our uranium results for the basalts also confirm previously reported high-precision mass spectrometric results from our laboratory. In many cases our measurements of U-Pu-Np-Am nuclides appear to be novel.

237 Np Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 237 Np. Fission was induced in a NpO 2 (NO 3 ) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. The irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detection setup within 50 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 50 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. Finally, the initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

Crystallographic structure and crystal field parameters in the [An IV (DPA) 3 ] 2- series, An = Th, U, Np, Pu

The [An IV (DPA) 3 ] 2- series with An = Th, U, Np, Pu has been synthesized and characterized using SC-XRD and vibrational spectroscopy. First principles calculations were performed, the total electron density is analyzed using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules. Crystal field parameters and strength parameters are deduced following a previous work on the Ln III analog series e.g. [J. Jung et al., Chem. – Eur. J., 2019, 25, 15112]. The trends in the parameters along the series are compared to the Ln III complexes. They evidence larger covalent interactions and larger J mixing.
