Mathematical analysis of a Vuilleumier refrigerator.

A comprehensive analysis of the Vuilleumier refrigerator was conducted. This analysis includes the effects of nonisothermal gas heat addition and rejection, hot and cold regenerator inefficiencies, conduction losses, and gas leakage losses. A computer program was written which solves the equations resulting from the analysis. The program calculates internal pressures, temperatures, and gas flow rates as functions of refrigerator crank angle, as well as overall refrigerator cooling load and power input. Comparisons between the program results and available data show good agreement, with a marked improvement over the predictions of the ideal model.

Ablation and radiation coupled viscous hypersonic shock layers, volume 2

A computer program can be used to determine the radiative flux and flux divergence through a nonisothermal planar slab of gas is described. The program considers species typical of air at high temperatures and nylon or carbon phenolic ablation products. The equations solved are for a variable optical depth line and continuum gas model using species cross sections and line widths as the basic data.

Intercomponent momentum transport and electrical conductivity of collisionless plasma

Based on the Lenard-Balescu equation, the interaction integral for the intercomponent momentum transfer in a two-component, collisionless plasma is evaluated in closed form. The distribution functions of the electrons and ions are represented in the form of nonisothermal, displaced Maxwellians corresponding to the 5-moment approximation. As an application, the transport of electrical current in an electric field is discussed for infrasonic up to sonic electron-ion drift velocities.

High density constraint on the entropy instability

The entropy instability squared is a nonisothermal effect which is eliminated by parallel ion pressure at high densities (k sub z lambda sub e 1/2 sq root of m/M), reducing previous growth rate estimates and the range of unstable parameters.

The upper atmosphere of Neptune - An analysis of occultation observations

An analysis of available observations of the April 7, 1968, occultation of BD-17 deg 4388 by Neptune yields upper atmosphere temperatures of about 140 K near the 5 x 10 to the 14th power per cu cm level. The temperature structure of the atmosphere at these levels is complicated and nonisothermal. Diurnal temperature variations are certainly less than 15 K between 0 and 55 deg latitude.

Radiative cooling of a hydrogen plasma in a shock tube

A method of computing radiative cooling of a hydrogen plasma assuming quasi-isothermal radiative transfer is described. A comparison with nonisothermal calculations for a plane parallel slab indicates good agreement for temperature gradients up to 300 K/cm. The calculations are compared with shock-tube data obtained in the JPL high-performance shock-tube facility. The calculations agreed with the data for one run but were 20 percent high for the other. Due to greater radiative cooling at the test slug boundaries a lateral temperature variation typically exists. This would cause the intensity measurement, which is integrated across the diameter of the test slug, to be below the prediction.

Energy transfer by radiation in non-grey atomic gases in isothermal and non-isothermal slabs

A multiband model for the absorption coefficient of atomic hydrogen-helium plasmas is constructed which includes continuum and line contributions. Emission from 28 stronger lines of 106 that have been screened is considered, of which 21 are from hydrogen and 7 belong to helium, with reabsorption due to line-line, line-continuum overlap accurately accounted for. The model is utilized in the computation of intensities and fluxes from shock-heated slabs of 85% H2-15% He mixtures for slab thicknesses from 1 to 30 cm, temperature from 10,000 to 20,000 K, and for different densities. In conjunction with the multiband model, simple numerical schemes have been devised which provide a quick and comprehensive way of computing radiative energy transfer in nonisothermal and nongrey gases.

Influence of heat transfer on the stability of parallel flow between concentric cylinders

The stability of the parallel flow of water between concentric cylinders at different temperatures is investigated for infinitesimal velocity and pressure disturbances. Primary interest is in the effect of heat transfer and the radius ratio a/b on the critical point of the neutral stability curve. The results indicate a strong dependence of the critical eigenvalues on both the heat transfer and the radius ratio. The critical Reynolds number of the nonisothermal flow appears to approach a finite value as the inner radius approaches zero (pipe flow) by showing an inflection point on the curve of critical Reynolds number vs a/b.
