An alcove at the acetyl-CoA synthase nickel active site is required for productive substrate CO binding and anaerobic carbon fixation

One of the seven natural CO 2 fixation pathways, the anaerobic Wood-Ljungdahl pathway (WLP) is unique in generating CO as a metabolic intermediate, operating through organometallic intermediates, and in conserving (versus utilizing) net ATP. The key enzyme in the WLP is acetyl-CoA synthase (ACS), which uses an active site [2Ni-4Fe-4S] cluster (A-cluster), a CO tunnel, and an organometallic (Ni-CO, Ni-methyl, and Ni-acetyl) reaction sequence to generate acetyl-CoA. Here, we reveal that an alcove, which interfaces the tunnel and the A-cluster, is essential for CO 2 fixation and autotrophic growth by the WLP. In vitro spectroscopy, kinetics, binding, and in vivo growth experiments reveal that a Phe229A substitution at one wall of the alcove decreases CO affinity thirty-fold and abolishes autotrophic growth; however, a F229W substitution enhances CO binding 80-fold. Our results indicate that the structure of the alcove is exquisitely tuned to concentrate CO near the A-cluster; protect ACS from CO loss during catalysis, provide a haven for inhibitory CO, and stabilize the tetrahedral coordination at the Nip site where CO binds. The directing, concentrating, and protective effects of the alcove explain the inability of F209A to grow autotrophically. The alcove also could help explain current controversies over whether ACS binds CO and methyl through a random or ordered mechanism. Our work redefines what we historically refer to as the metallocenter "active site". The alcove is so crucial for enzymatic function that we propose it is part of the active site. The community should now look for such alcoves in all "gas handling" metalloenzymes.

Rapid macrovoid characterization in membranes prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation: A comparison between 2D and 3D techniques

Optimizing the performance of asymmetric membranes prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) requires a quantitative understanding of how processing variables influence membrane morphology. Presently, the most useful structural quantification techniques require 3D visualization of the membrane structure and are best suited for studies seeking detailed information on small datasets. This study proposes and validates a rapid and accurate technique for quantifying macroporosity (i.e., D m ), a simple descriptor of sublayer macrovoid content in asymmetric membranes D m . values measured from segmented cross-sectional imaging performed via X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are presented and compared for three asymmetric membranes prepared from commercial polymers. Importantly, analyses of 3D XCT membrane reconstructions reveal that D m is described by a single, centralized mean, which demonstrates that macrovoid content is spatially homogenous. Thus, D m can be approximated from limited sampling of the 2D cross-sectional membrane structure via SEM. A proposed 2D SEM sampling method provides D m estimates within ±6% of corresponding 3D XCT values with 30 independent measurements for the three membranes. Further sensitivity is achieved using complementary descriptors such as macrovoid count density (i.e., C m ). This technique is thus a useful tool for characterizing macroporosity from a broad selection of membrane samples.

SAN-Based Block Polymers as a Platform for Manufacturing Strong Isoporous Membranes

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are ubiquitous in water purification and bioprocessing. However, co-designing their mechanical and transport properties remains challenging because of the broad pore size distributions at the surface and within the bulk that result from nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) – their typical manufacturing process. These distributions influence the hydrodynamic resistance to water flow and the stress concentrations around the pores. Developing advanced UF membranes requires innovative molecular designs that offer control over the surface and bulk pores, as well as the mechanical properties of the load-bearing, polymer. Here, we introduce a platform for designing UF membranes by leveraging solution self-assembly of block polymers and chain architectures with pendant polar groups. The block polymers consist of a poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) hydrophobic block, which is known for its strength, and a poly(4-vinyl pyridine) hydrophilic block, which drives solution self-assembly. We focus on a series of block polymers with constant molecular weight, M n ≈ 115 kDa, SAN fraction, 75 wt.%, and varying acrylonitrile content, 0 to 40 mol%, to demonstrate that: (i) RAFT dispersion copolymerization of acrylonitrile and styrene provides a facile route to synthesize strong block polymers, (ii) incorporation of acrylonitrile into the hydrophobic block enhances membrane strength by facilitating chain entanglements and dipole-dipole interactions, and (iii) acrylonitrile alters the balance between membrane permeance and rejection, even when the membranes feature similar surface and bulk pores. Overall, our results provide insights into the molecular design of UF membranes with enhanced mechanical and separation properties, contributing to the development of materials for water and energy technologies.

Controlling P–C/C–H Bond Cleavage in Nickel Bis(diphosphine) Complexes: Reactivity Scope, Mechanism, and Computations

The synthesis of heteroleptic [Ni(P 2 N 2 )(diphosphine)][BF 4 ] 2 complexes and the cleavage of P–C and C–H bonds of the P 2 N 2 ligand in those complexes are reported here. The products are five-coordinate complexes in which Ni–C and P–H bonds have formed to give a cyclic moiety containing Ni–CH$=$NR 2 . The reactivity of [Ni(P 2 N 2 )(diphosphine)][BF 4 ] 2 complexes is influenced by the rigidity of the diphosphine, the steric effect of the substituents, and length of the carbon linker of the diphosphine ligands. Diphosphine ligands bearing a rigid backbone (e.g., dmpbz, 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)benzene) or aromatic substituents (e.g., dppe, 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) react with [Ni(P t Bu 2 N Bn 2 )(CH 3 CN) 2 ][BF 4 ] 2 to give P–C/C–H bond cleavage products. Both [Ni(P t Bu 2 N Bn 2 )(dmpe)(MeCN)][BF 4 ] 2 and [Ni(P t Bu 2 N Bn 2 )(dmpm)(MeCN)][BF 4 ] 2 (dmpm = 1,2-bis(dimethylylphosphino)methane) were prepared by the reaction of [Ni(P t Bu 2 N Bn 2 )(CH 3 CN) 2 ][BF 4 ] 2 with the corresponding diphosphine ligands. [Ni(P t Bu 2 N Bn 2 )(dmpe)(MeCN)][BF 4 ] 2 readily undergoes P–C/C–H bond cleavage in nitromethane. In sharp contrast, [Ni(P t Bu 2 N Bn 2 )(dmpm)][BF 4 ] 2 is stabilized by dmpm, a diphosphine with small bite angle, and does not show P–C/C–H bond cleavage reactivity. Computational results show that for complexes bearing less bulky diphosphine ligands, such as dmpm, the barriers for the rate-determining transition states are in some examples higher than 30 kcal/mol with the M06 functional, higher than those for complexes bearing more rigid or more bulky ligands, consistent with experimental studies. The calculated barriers for the first transition state correlated with increased values of the dihedral angle formed by the two NiP 2 planes.

Surfactants Used in Colloidal Synthesis Modulate Ni Nanoparticle Surface Evolution for Selective CO 2 Hydrogenation

Colloidal chemistry holds promise to prepare uniform and size-controllable pre-catalysts; however, it remains a challenge to unveil the atomic-level transition from pre-catalysts to active catalytic surfaces under the reaction conditions to enable the mechanistic design of catalysts. In this work, we report an ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study, coupled with in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, to elucidate the surface catalytic sites of colloidal Ni nanoparticles for CO 2 hydrogenation. We show that Ni nanoparticles with phosphine ligands exhibit a distinct surface evolution compared with amine-capped ones, owing to the diffusion of P under oxidative (air) or reductive (CO 2 + H 2 ) gaseous environments at elevated temperatures. The resulting NiP x surface leads to a substantially improved selectivity for CO production, in contrast to the metallic Ni, which favors CH 4 . The further elimination of surface metallic Ni sites by designing multi-step P incorporation achieves unit selectivity of CO in high-rate CO 2 hydrogenation.

Exciton-driven antiferromagnetic metal in a correlated van der Waals insulator

Abstract Collective excitations of bound electron-hole pairs—known as excitons—are ubiquitous in condensed matter, emerging in systems as diverse as band semiconductors, molecular crystals, and proteins. Recently, their existence in strongly correlated electron materials has attracted increasing interest due to the excitons’ unique coupling to spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The non-equilibrium driving of such dressed quasiparticles offers a promising platform for realizing unconventional many-body phenomena and phases beyond thermodynamic equilibrium. Here, we achieve this in the van der Waals correlated insulator NiPS 3 by photoexciting its newly discovered spin–orbit-entangled excitons that arise from Zhang-Rice states. By monitoring the time evolution of the terahertz conductivity, we observe the coexistence of itinerant carriers produced by exciton dissociation and a long-wavelength antiferromagnetic magnon that coherently precesses in time. These results demonstrate the emergence of a transient metallic state that preserves long-range antiferromagnetism, a phase that cannot be reached by simply tuning the temperature. More broadly, our findings open an avenue toward the exciton-mediated optical manipulation of magnetism.

Coordination environment tuning of nickel sites by oxyanions to optimize methanol electro-oxidation activity

To achieve zero-carbon economy, advanced anode catalysts are desirable for hydrogen production and biomass upgrading powered by renewable energy. Ni-based non-precious electrocatalysts are considered as potential candidates because of intrinsic redox attributes, but in-depth understanding and rational design of Ni site coordination still remain challenging. Here, we perform anodic electrochemical oxidation of Ni-metalloids (NiP x , NiS x , and NiSe x ) to in-situ construct different oxyanion-coordinated amorphous nickel oxyhydroxides (NiOOH-TO x ), among which NiOOH-PO x shows optimal local coordination environment and boosts electrocatalytic activity of Ni sites towards selective oxidation of methanol to formate. Experiments and theoretical results demonstrate that NiOOH-PO x possesses improved adsorption of OH* and methanol, and favors the formation of CH 3 O* intermediates. The coordinated phosphate oxyanions effectively tailor the d band center of Ni sites and increases Ni-O covalency, promoting the catalytic activity. This study provides additional insights into modulation of active-center coordination environment via oxyanions for organic molecules transformation.

Spin-induced linear polarization of photoluminescence in antiferromagnetic van der Waals crystals

Antiferromagnets are promising components for spintronics due to their terahertz resonance, multilevel states and absence of stray fields. However, the zero net magnetic moment of antiferromagnets makes the detection of the antiferromagnetic order and the investigation of fundamental spin properties notoriously difficult. Here, we report an optical detection of Néel vector orientation through an ultra-sharp photoluminescence in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3 from bulk to atomically thin flakes. The strong correlation between spin flipping and electric dipole oscillator results in a linear polarization of the sharp emission, which aligns perpendicular to the spin orientation in the crystal. By applying an in-plane magnetic field, we achieve manipulation of the photoluminescence polarization. Furthermore, this correlation between emitted photons and spins in layered magnets provides routes for investigating magneto-optics in two-dimensional materials, and hence opens a path for developing opto-spintronic devices and antiferromagnet-based quantum information technologies.

Proximity-induced chiral quantum light generation in strain-engineered WSe 2 /NiPS 3 heterostructures

Quantum light emitters capable of generating single photons with circular polarization and non-classical statistics could enable non-reciprocal single-photon devices and deterministic spin–photon interfaces for quantum networks. To date, the emission of such chiral quantum light relies on the application of intense external magnetic fields, electrical/optical injection of spin-polarized carriers/excitons or coupling with complex photonic metastructures. Here we report the creation of free-space chiral quantum light emitters via the nanoindentation of monolayer WSe 2 /NiPS 3 heterostructures at zero external magnetic field. These quantum light emitters emit with a high degree of circular polarization (0.89) and single-photon purity (95%), independent of pump laser polarization. In this study, scanning diamond nitrogen-vacancy microscopy and temperature-dependent magneto-photoluminescence studies reveal that the chiral quantum light emission arises from magnetic proximity interactions between localized excitons in the WSe 2 monolayer and the out-of-plane magnetization of defects in the antiferromagnetic order of NiPS 3 , both of which are co-localized by strain fields associated with the nanoscale indentations.

Attention-based quantum tomography

Abstract With rapid progress across platforms for quantum systems, the problem of many-body quantum state reconstruction for noisy quantum states becomes an important challenge. There has been a growing interest in approaching the problem of quantum state reconstruction using generative neural network models. Here we propose the ‘attention-based quantum tomography’ (AQT), a quantum state reconstruction using an attention mechanism-based generative network that learns the mixed state density matrix of a noisy quantum state. AQT is based on the model proposed in ‘Attention is all you need’ by Vaswani et al (2017 NIPS ) that is designed to learn long-range correlations in natural language sentences and thereby outperform previous natural language processing (NLP) models. We demonstrate not only that AQT outperforms earlier neural-network-based quantum state reconstruction on identical tasks but that AQT can accurately reconstruct the density matrix associated with a noisy quantum state experimentally realized in an IBMQ quantum computer. We speculate the success of the AQT stems from its ability to model quantum entanglement across the entire quantum system much as the attention model for NLP captures the correlations among words in a sentence.

Symmetry crossover in layered MPS 3 complexes (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) via near-field infrared spectroscopy

In this paper, we employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of bulk, few-sheet, and single-sheet members of the MPS 3 (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) family of materials and compare our findings with complementary lattice dynamics calculations. MnPS 3 and the Fe analog are similar in terms of their symmetry crossovers, from C2/ m to P $\bar{3}$1 m , as the monolayer is approached. These states differ as to the presence of a C 3 rotation around the metal center. On the other hand, NiPS 3 does not show a symmetry crossover, and the lack of a B u symmetry mode near 450 cm -1 suggests that C 3 rotational symmetry is already present, even in the bulk material. We discuss these findings in terms of local symmetry and temperature effects as well as the curious relationship between these symmetry transformations and those that take place under pressure.

Long-Lived Population Inversion in Resonantly Driven Excitonic Antiferromagnet

Van der Waals magnets are an emerging material family for investigating light-matter interactions and spin-correlated excitations. Here, we report the discovery of a photo-induced state with a lifetime of 17 ps in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3 , which appears exclusively with resonant pumping at 1.476 eV in the antiferromagnetic state. Furthermore, the long-lived state comes with a negative photoconductivity, a characteristic optical response of population inversion. Our findings demonstrate a promising pathway to potentially achieve long-lived lasing at terahertz frequencies in reduced dimensions.

Distinct Optical Excitation Mechanisms of a Coherent Magnon in a van der Waals Antiferromagnet

The control of antiferromagnets with ultrashort optical pulses has emerged as a prominent field of research. Tailored laser excitation can launch coherent spin waves at terahertz frequencies, yet a comprehensive description of their generation mechanisms is still lacking despite extensive efforts. Using terahertz emission spectroscopy, we investigate the generation of a coherent magnon mode in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3 under a range of photoexcitation conditions. By tuning the pump photon energy from transparency to resonant with a 𝑑−𝑑 transition, we reveal a striking change in the coherent magnon’s dependence on the pump polarization, indicating two distinct excitation mechanisms. Furthermore, our findings provide a strategy for the manipulation of magnetic modes via photoexcitation around subgap electronic states.

Controlling magnetic exchange and anisotropy by nonmagnetic ligand substitution in layered 𝑀⁢P⁢𝑋 3 (𝑀 = Ni, Mn; 𝑋 = S, Se)

Recent discoveries in two-dimensional magnetism have intensified the investigation of van der Waals magnetic materials and further improved our ability to tune their magnetic properties. Tunable magnetism has been widely studied in antiferromagnetic metal thiophosphates 𝑀⁢P⁢𝑋 3 . Substitution of metal ions 𝑀 has been adopted as an important technique to engineer the magnetism in 𝑀⁢P⁢𝑋 3 . In this work, we have studied the previously unexplored chalcogen 𝑋 substitutions in 𝑀⁢P⁢𝑋 3 (𝑀 = Mn/Ni; 𝑋 = S/Se). We synthesized the single crystals of MnP⁢S 3−𝑥 ⁢Se 𝑥 (0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3) and NiP⁢S 3−𝑥 ⁢Se 𝑥 (0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1.3) and investigated the systematic evolution of the magnetism with varying 𝑥. Our study reveals the effective tuning of magnetic interactions and anisotropies in both MnPS 3 and NiPS 3 upon Se substitution. Such efficient engineering of the magnetism provides a suitable platform to understand the low-dimensional magnetism and develop future magnetic devices.

Hamiltonian parameter inference from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with active learning

Identifying model Hamiltonians is a vital step toward creating predictive models of materials. Here, in this study, we combine Bayesian optimization with the EDRIXS numerical package to infer Hamiltonian parameters from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra within the single atom approximation. To evaluate the efficacy of our method, we test it on experimental RIXS spectra of NiPS 3 , NiCl 2 , Ca 3 ⁢LiOsO 6 , and Fe 2⁢ O 3 , and demonstrate that it can reproduce results obtained from hand-fitted parameters to a precision similar to expert human analysis while providing a more systematic mapping of parameter space. Our work provides a key first step toward solving the inverse scattering problem to extract effective multi-orbital models from information-dense RIXS measurements, which can be applied to a host of quantum materials. We also propose atomic model parameter sets for two materials, Ca 3⁢ LiOsO 6 and Fe 2⁢ O 3 , that were previously missing from the literature.

Improved charge extraction in inverted perovskite solar cells with dual-site-binding ligands

Inverted (pin) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) afford improved operating stability in comparison to their nip counterparts but have lagged in power conversion efficiency (PCE). The energetic losses responsible for this PCE deficit in pin PSCs occur primarily at the interfaces between the perovskite and the charge-transport layers. Additive and surface treatments that use passivating ligands usually bind to a single active binding site: This dense packing of electrically resistive passivants perpendicular to the surface may limit the fill factor in pin PSCs. We identified ligands that bind two neighboring lead(II) ion (Pb 2+ ) defect sites in a planar ligand orientation on the perovskite. We fabricated pin PSCs and report a certified quasi–steady state PCE of 26.15 and 24.74% for 0.05– and 1.04–square centimeter illuminated areas, respectively. The devices retain 95% of their initial PCE after 1200 hours of continuous 1 sun maximum power point operation at 65°C.
