Tribological properties of ceramic-(Ti3Al-Nb) sliding couples for use as candidate seal materials to 700 C

Tribological properties of Ti3Al-Nb intermetallic disks sliding against alumina-boria-silicate fabric were ascertained in air at temperatures from 25 to 700 C. These materials are candidates for sliding seal applications for the National AeroSpace Plane. The tests were done using a pin on disk tribometer. Sliding was unidirectional at 0.27 m/sec under a nominal contact stress of 340 kPa. Gold sputter or ion plating deposited films were used to reduce friction and wear. Rhodium and palladium films were used beneath the gold lubricating films to prevent diffusion of the substrate into the gold at high temperature. The friction and wear of the unlubricated specimens was unacceptable. Friction coefficients were generally greater than 1.0. The ion plated gold films, when used with a rhodium diffusion barrier reduced friction by almost a factor of 2. Wear was also substantially reduced. The sputter deposited films were not adherent unless the substrate was sputter cleaned immediately prior to film deposition. Palladium did not function as a diffusion barrier.

Solidification processing of intermetallic Nb-Al alloys

Several Nb-Al alloys, including single-phase NbAl3 and the eutectic of Nb2Al and NbAl3, were prepared either by nonconsumable arc melting in Ar or by zone processing in He following initial induction melting and rod casting, and the effect of the solidification route on the microstructure and room-temperature mechanical properties of these alloys was investigated. Automated control procedures and melt conditions for directional solidification of NbAl3 and the Nb2Al/Nb3Al eutectic were developed; high purity and stoichiometry were obtained. The effects of ternary additions of Ti and Ni are described.

Nonequilibrium synthesis of NbAl3 and Nb-Al-V alloys by laser cladding. II - Oxidation behavior

Isothermal oxidation behaviors of NbAl3 alloy synthesized by laser cladding were investigated at temperatures between 800 and 1400 C, and the effect of vanadium microalloying on the oxidation of the laser-clad alloy was examined. The oxidation kinetics of the two alloys were monitored using thermal gravimetric weight gain data, and the bulk and surface chemistries were analyzed using XRD and XPS, respectively. It was found that NbAl3 did not form an exclusive layer of protective Al2O3. The oxidation products at 800 C were found to be a mixture of Nb2O5 and Al2O3. At 1200 C, a mixture of NbAlO4, Nb2O5, and Al2O3 formed; and at 1400 C, a mixture of NbAlO4, Al2O3, NbO2, NbO(2.432), and Nb2O5 formed. The addition of V led to a dramatic increase of the oxidation rate, which may be related to the formation of (Nb, V)2O5 and VO2, which grows in preference to protective Al2O3.

Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness of Nb-40Al-8Cr-1W-1Y-0.05B Intermetallic Material by Indentation Techniques

The fracture toughness of an Nb-40Al-8Cr - 1W-1Y-0.05B intermetallic material was evaluated by indentation techniques at room temperature. Two widely used indentation methods, crack size measurement and indent strength, yielded excellent agreement with a conventional fracture toughness technique using straight-through precracked specimens, despite the occasional formation of poorly configured cracks. However, the modified indentation technique, using dummy indent flaws, resulted in a low fracture toughness compared to that evaluated by the other methods. The material did not exhibit rising R-curve behavior, as evaluated from the indentation strength data. These results indicate that indentation fracture principles are applicable to this brittle intermetallic material without modification of the residual contact stress term originally calibrated for ceramic materials.

Feasibility of KTa(1-x)Nb(x)O3 as a dielectric or pyroelectric microcalorimeter

We are developing a dielectric microcalorimeter for X-ray spectroscopy. We will present the results of our measurement of the dielectric permittivity, the spontaneous polarization, and the pyroelectric coefficient of the mixed-crystal quantum ferroelectric KTa(1-x)Nb(x)O3 with a doping of x = 0.012, as a function of temperature and bias voltage across the device. The effects of surface layers on the permittivity and the pyroelectric coefficient are discussed. We also show the signal results from infrared LED and alpha-particle radiation.

Partitioning of Nb, Mo, Ba, Ce, Pb, Th and U between immiscible carbonate and silicate liquids: Evaluating the effects of P2O5,F, and carbonate composition

Previously we have reported carbonate liq./silicate liq. partition coefficients (D) for a standard suite of trace elements (Nb, Mo, Ba, Ce, Pb, Th, and U) and Ra and Pa as well. In brief, we have found that immiscible liquid partitioning is a strong function of temperature. As the critical temperature of the carbonate-silicate solvus is approached, all partition coefficients approach unity. Additionally, for the overwhelming majority of the partitioning elements, InD is a linear function of 'ionic field strength,' z/r, where z is the charge of the partitioned cation and r is its ionic radius.

Mechanical Properties of Cu-Cr-Nb Alloys

The chemical compositions of the alloys are listed. The alloying levels were near the values for stochiometric Cr2Nb. A slight excess of Cr was chosen for increased hydrogen embrittlement resistance. The microstructures of all Cu-Cr-Nb alloys were very similar. Two typical transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrographs are presented. The images show the presence of large mount of Cr2Nb precipitates in a nearly pure Cu matrix. The interactions between dislocations and precipitates are currently under investigations, but as the images demonstrates, the extremely fine (less then 15 nm) Cr2Nb are the primary strengtheners for the alloy.

Start Up of a Nb-1%Zr Potassium Heat Pipe From the Frozen State

The start up of a liquid metal heat pipe from the frozen state was evaluated experimentally with a Nb-1%Zr heat pipe with potassium as the working fluid. The heat pipe was fabricated and tested at Los Alamos National Laboratory. RF induction heating was used to heat 13 cm of the 1-m-long heat pipe. The heat pipe and test conditions are well characterized so that the test data may be used for comparison with numerical analyses. An attempt was made during steady state tests to calibrate the heat input so that the heat input would be known during the transient cases. The heat pipe was heated to 675 C with a throughput of 600 W and an input heat flux of 6 W/cm(exp 2). Steady state tests, start up from the frozen state, and transient variations from steady state were performed.

Effects of Cr and Nb alloying additions on high temperature creep deformation of Ni-based superalloys

Micro-twinning is the major creep deformation mechanism in Ni-based superalloys at temperatures above 700 °C. Recent experiments suggest that superlattice stacking faults y ' in phase may serve as the precursors to twin formation. Segregation of alloying elements to these precursors may have a significant effect on formation and extension of micro-twins. Using atomistic modeling we investigate and explain the effects of Cr and Nb alloying additions on these processes. We consider the experimentally obtained creep curves for several Ni-based superalloys with different elemental compositions and relate the observed trends to the simulation results presented in this study. Our results help to rationalize the experimentally observed puzzling effects of elemental composition of the alloy on creep resistance.
