Multifunctional Electroactive Nanocomposites Based on Piezoelectric Boron Nitride Nanotubes

Space exploration missions require sensors and devices capable of stable operation in harsh environments such as those that include high thermal fluctuation, atomic oxygen, and high-energy ionizing radiation. However, conventional or state-of-the-art electroactive materials like lead zirconate titanate, poly(vinylidene fluoride), and carbon nanotube (CNT)-doped polyimides have limitations on use in those extreme applications. Theoretical studies have shown that boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have strength-to-weight ratios comparable to those of CNTs, excellent high-temperature stability (to 800 C in air), large electroactive characteristics, and excellent neutron radiation shielding capability. In this study, we demonstrated the experimental electroactive characteristics of BNNTs in novel multifunctional electroactive nanocomposites. Upon application of an external electric field, the 2 wt % BNNT/polyimide composite was found to exhibit electroactive strain composed of a superposition of linear piezoelectric and nonlinear electrostrictive components. When the BNNTs were aligned by stretching the 2 wt % BNNT/polyimide composite, electroactive characteristics increased by about 460% compared to the nonstretched sample. An all-nanotube actuator consisting of a BNNT buckypaper layer between two single-walled carbon nanotube buck-paper electrode layers was found to have much larger electroactive properties. The additional neutron radiation shielding properties and ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared optical properties of the BNNT composites make them excellent candidates for use in the extreme environments of space missions. utilizing the unique characteristics of BNNTs.

Multifunctional 2D- Materials: Selenides and Halides

Material is the key component and controls the performance of the detectors, devices and sensors. The materials design, processing, growth and fabrication of bulk and nanocrystals and fabrication into devices and sensors involve multidisciplinary team of experts. This places a large burden on the cost of the novel materials development. Due to this reason there is a big thrust for the prediction of multifunctionality of materials before design and development. Up to some extent design can achieve certain properties. In multinary materials processing is also a big factor. In this presentation, examples of two classes of industrially important materials will be described.

Creating a Multifunctional Composite Stator Slot Material System to Enable High Power Density Electric Machines for Electrified Aircraft Applications

Increasing the power density and efficiency of electric machines (motors and generators) is integral to bringing Electrified Aircraft (EA) to commercial realization. However, power density and efficiency are not qualities that can be developed independently. At the heart of any electric machine are the conductors (usually copper) that carry current and generate magnetic fields. Increased power density means increased current density and increased joule heating in a smaller volume. To increase efficiency at the wire level means minimizing electrical resistance and hence power lost to joule heating. There are fundamental challenges with concomitantly increasing both power density and efficiency since the copper resistivity is very temperature sensitive at common electric machine operating conditions. Simple calculations of the linear increase in resistivity of copper as a function of temperature, reveals that a one degree Celsius increase in temperature results in a 0.39% decrease in efficiency. Conversely, a 20 degree Celsius decrease in copper temperature produces a 7.8% increase in efficiency. Therefore, improved thermal management concepts for electric machine building blocks such as stator winding are a priority for improving efficiency and power density. This paper proposing changing the view of component materials in the stator slots from individual components with singular functionality to a composite system where the components take on a multifunctional roles. In the composite framework, achievable material development goals are defined that together have maximum system impact on the thermal environment inside of high power density electric machines for aerospace applications.

An Analytical Method to Calculate Effective Elastic Properties of General Multifunctional Honeycomb Cores in Sandwich Composites

Sandwich composite structures are ideal configurations in which to incorporate additional functionality beyond load-carrying capabilities. The inner core-walls can be layered to incorporate other functions such as power storage for a battery. In this work we investigate an assemblage of analytical tools to compute effective properties that allow complex layered core architectures to be homogenized into a single continuum layer. This provides a great increase in computational efficiency to numerically simulate the structural response of multifunctional sandwich structures under applied loads. We present a coupled analytical method including an extensive numerical verification of the accuracy of this method.

An Ultra-long Life, High-performance, Flexible Li-CO2Battery Based on Multifunctional Carbon Electrocatalysts

Integrating CO2 utilization and renewable energy delivery/storage, the rechargeable Li–CO2 battery has been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation secondary batteries. However, high-performance catalyst(s) for efficient formation and decomposition of the discharge product, Li2CO3, are an imperative part of a Li–CO2 battery. The development of flexible Li–CO2 batteries extends their applications into compliant and wearable devices/systems, but at the same time imposes a big challenge for battery fabrication and lifetime enhancement. In this study, a rechargeable quasi-solidus flexible Li–CO2 battery was designed and fabricated using highly active N,S-doped carbon nanotubes (N,S-doped CNTs) as the cathode catalyst, and a smart polymer gel as the flexible electrolyte. This newly-developed flexible Li–CO2 battery exhibited a capacity as high as 23560 mAh g−1 based on the catalyst mass and an ultra-long lifetime of up to 538 cycles with excellent mechanical flexibility. This work provides a platform for the design and development of high-performance flexible Li–CO2 batteries from low-cost, earth-abundant, carbon-based multifunctional cathode catalysts.

Optical Characteristics of Radiated Multifunctional Optical Materials

The performance of optical and electronic materials, and devices are affected significantly in space due to exposure from high energy radiations. We have been investigating the effect of -ray radiations on multifunctional binary and ternary selenide and halide crystals. These materials have shown excellent performance for the wavelength conversion in MWIR and LWIR regions, acousto-optics, and great potential for radiation detection. Crystals with high Z materials such as thallium, mercury and lead based compounds have great potential for the development of a variety of devices and components suitable for space applications. We will report on the characteristics of several halides including mercurous halides (Hg2X2, X= Cl, Br, I), Thallium mercury iodide (Tl4HgI4) and thallium arsenic selenide and thallium gallium selenide, and ternary selenides. These crystals, synthesized with high purity source materials, will be evaluated by studying optical characteristics and measuring resistivity after exposure to a 137Cs -ray source.
