Control of magnetic properties of MnBi 2 Te 4 using a van der Waals ferroelectric III 2 -VI 3 film and biaxial strain

Using the first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated magnetic properties of a MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) monolayer in contact with III 2 -VI 3 two-dimensional ferroelectric substrates. As the electric polarization in the ferroelectric films is switched, a semiconductor to half-metal transition occurs in MBT, and its magnetic easy axis in several cases reorients. As an example, the Curie temperature of MBT/In 2 Se 3 can be enhanced to 21.5 or 32 K under the influence of electric polarization and biaxial strain, much higher than that of the pristine MBT monolayer, which is 14.5 K in our calculations. Our results in this work suggest effective ways to tune magnetic properties of MBT and provide useful insights for the further development of these important van der Waals functional materials.

Intrinsic axion insulating behavior in antiferromagnetic MnBi 6 Te 10

A striking feature of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) protected topological insulators (TIs) is that they are characterized by a half integer quantum Hall effect on the boundary when the surface states are gapped by time-reversal breaking perturbations. While TRS-protected TIs have become increasingly under control, magnetic analogs are still a largely unexplored territory with novel rich structures. In particular, magnetic topological insulators can also host a quantized axion term in the presence of lattice symmetries. Since these symmetries are naturally broken on the boundary, the surface states can develop a gap without external manipulation. In this work, we combine theoretical analysis, density-functional calculations and experimental evidence to reveal intrinsic axion insulating behavior in MnBi 6 Te 10 . Additionally, the quantized axion term arises from the simplest possible mechanism in the antiferromagnetic regime where it is protected by inversion symmetry and the product of a fractional translation and TRS. The anticipated gapping of the Dirac surface state at the edge is subsequently experimentally established using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). As a result, this system provides the magnetic analog of the simplest TRS-protected TI with a single, gapped Dirac cone at the surface.

Probing magnetic configuration-mediated topological phases via high harmonic generation in MnBi 2 Te 4

Compared to a space group, a magnetic space group is much more complex, as both magnetic structure and magnetic moment direction can change the original symmetries of materials. The interplay between space symmetry and magnetism can generate versatile novel quantum states. However, detecting these topological phases experimentally, achieved through manipulating the magnetic configuration, has been restricted. It is mainly because the intrinsic link between the theory and the available experimental technique remains elusive. Here, we show that high harmonic generation (HHG) can identify these topological quantum states. In this work, we use rhombohedral MnBi 2 Te 4 film as an example, and analyze the symmetry-dependent harmonic order and signal by combining first-principles calculations and time-dependent Liouville equation numerical computations. Our results provide a fundamental basis for using HHG to study the topological quantum phases mediated by various magnetic configurations that can be easily realized by applying an external magnetic field.

Defect-driven ferrimagnetism and hidden magnetization in MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) materials are promising antiferromagnetic topological insulators in which field-driven ferromagnetism is predicted to cause a transition between axion insulator and Weyl semimetallic states. However, the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn/Bi antisite defects and the main Mn layer can reduce the low-field magnetization, and it has been shown that such defects are more prevalent in the structurally identical magnetic insulator MnSb 2 Te 4 (MST). We use high-field magnetization measurements to show that the magnetization of MBT and MST occur in stages and full saturation requires fields of ~60 T. As a consequence, the low-field magnetization plateau state in MBT, where many determinations of the quantum anomalous Hall state are studied, actually consists of ferrimagnetic septuple blocks containing both uniform and staggered magnetization components.

Tuning magnetism and band topology through antisite defects in Sb-doped MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7

The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure in a magnetic topological insulator is crucial in order to realize various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals, Chern insulators, etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that under Sb doping the newly discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator MnBi 4 Te 7 evolves from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which results in additional Mn sublattices that modify the delicate interlayer magnetic interactions and cause the dominant Mn sublattice to go from AFM to FM. We further investigate the effect of antisites on the band topology using the first-principles calculations. Without considering antisites, the series evolves from AFM topological insulator (x=0) to FM axion insulators. In the exaggerated case of 16.7% of periodic antisites, the band topology is modified and a type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase can be realized at intermediate dopings. Therefore, this doping series provides a fruitful platform with continuously tunable magnetism and topology for investigating emergent phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, Fermi arc states, etc.

Quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnetism and anisotropic interlayer couplings in the magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) is a promising van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator that combines a topologically nontrivial inverted Bi-Te band gap with ferromagnetic (FM) layers of Mn ions. Here, the inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals reported here describes rather complex magnetism in MBT. The magnetic anisotropy that controls the bulk and surface magnetic field response of MBT is found to have contributions from both single-ion and interlayer two-ion terms. A description of the quasi-two-dimensional intralayer FM spin waves requires long-range, competing FM and AFM interactions and anomalous damping. While this might suggest carrier-mediated magnetic coupling, abinitio calculations in insulating MBT also find long-range interactions, and classical spin dynamics simulations suggest that magnetic vacancies are at least partially responsible for observations of anomalous damping near the zone boundary.

Kerr, Faraday, and magnetoelectric effects in MnBi 2 Te 4 thin films

The topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a characteristic property of topological insulators. In this paper, we use a simplified coupled-Dirac-cone electronic structure model to theoretically evaluate the THz and far infrared Kerr and Faraday responses of thin films of MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4 with up to N = 10 septuple layers with the goal of clarifying the relationship between these convenient magnetooptical observables and the TME. Here we find that for even N, the linear Kerr and Faraday responses to an electric field vanish in the low-frequency limit, even though the magnetoelectric response is large and approximately quantized.

Helimagnetism in MnBi 2 Se 4 Driven by Spin-Frustrating Interactions Between Antiferromagnetic Chains

We report the magnetic properties and magnetic structure determination for a linear-chain antiferromagnet, MnBi 2 Se 4 . The crystal structure of this material contains chains of edge-sharing MnSe 6 octahedra separated by Bi atoms. The magnetic behavior is dominated by intrachain antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, as demonstrated by the negative Weiss constant of –74 K obtained by the Curie–Weiss fit of the paramagnetic susceptibility measured along the easy-axis magnetization direction. The relative shift of adjacent chains by one-half of the chain period causes spin frustration due to interchain AFM coupling, which leads to AFM ordering at TN = 15 K. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the AFM ordered state exhibits an incommensurate helimagnetic structure with the propagation vector k = (0, 0.356, 0). The Mn moments are arranged perpendicular to the chain propagation direction (the crystallographic b axis), and the turn angle around the helix is 128°. The magnetic properties of MnBi2Se4 are discussed in comparison to other linear-chain antiferromagnets based on ternary mixed-metal halides and chalcogenides.
