On the Magnitudes of some CKM Matrix Elements

This write-up follows the presentation at the symposium, with emphasis on topics and ideas discussed there. It is purposefully informal, not a review of the field, and neither does it include a complete list of references. However, I hope that readers might find somwe comments useful or amusing, and may appreciate the challenges and reasons for excitement about recent progress and future opportunities in flavor physics.

Polarized and unpolarized gluon PDFs: Generative machine learning applications for lattice QCD matrix elements at short distance and large momentum

Lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations share a defining challenge by requiring a small finite range of spatial separation z between quark/gluon bilinears for controllable power corrections in the perturbative QCD factorization, and a large hadron boost p z for a successful determination of collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs). However, these two requirements make the determination of PDFs from lattice data very challenging. We present the application of generative machine learning algorithms to estimate the polarized and unpolarized gluon correlation functions utilizing short-distance data and extending the correlation up to z p z ≲ 14 , surpassing the current capabilities of lattice QCD calculations. We train physics-informed machine learning algorithms to learn from the short-distance correlation at z ≲ 0.36 fm and take the limit, p z → ∞ , thereby minimizing possible contamination from the higher-twist effects for a successful reconstruction of the polarized gluon PDF. We also expose the bias and problems with underestimating uncertainties associated with the use of model-dependent and overly constrained functional forms, such as x α ( 1 − x ) β and its variants to extract PDFs from the lattice data. We propose the use of generative machine learning algorithms to mitigate these issues and present our determination of the polarized and unpolarized gluon PDFs in the nucleon. Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the 𝑁 → Δ transition at low 𝑄 2

Here, we report the measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the 𝑁 → Δ transition via the 𝑒 − + 𝑝 → 𝑒 − + Δ + reaction at two different kinematic points with low four-momentum transfer 𝑄 2 . Measurements were made with incident electron beam energies of 0.877 and 1.16 GeV, corresponding to 𝑄 2 values of 0.0111 and 0.0208 (GeV/c) 2 , respectively. These measurements put constraints on a low-energy constant in the weak Lagrangian, 𝑑 Δ , corresponding to a parity-violating electric-dipole transition matrix element. This matrix element has been shown to be large in the strangeness-changing channel, via weak hyperon decays such as Σ + → 𝑝⁢𝛾. The measurements reported here constrain 𝑑 Δ in the strangeness-conserving channel. The final asymmetries were −0.65±1.00⁢(stat.)±1.02⁢(syst.) ppm (parts per million) for 0.877 GeV and −3.59±0.82⁢(stat.)±1.33⁢(syst.) ppm for 1.16 GeV. With these results we deduce a small value for 𝑑 Δ , consistent with zero, in the strangeness-conserving channel, in contrast to the large value for 𝑑 Δ previously reported in the strangeness-changing channel.

Calculating elements of matrix functions using divided differences

In this work, we introduce a method for calculating individual elements of matrix functions. Our technique makes use of a novel series expansion for the action of matrix functions on basis vectors that is memory efficient even for very large matrices. We showcase our approach by calculating the matrix elements of the exponential of a transverse-field Ising model and evaluating quantum transition amplitudes for large many-body Hamiltonians of sizes up to 2 64 x 2 64 on a single workstation. We also discuss the application of the method to matrix inverses. We relate and compare our method to the state-of-the-art and demonstrate its advantages. We also discuss practical applications of our method.

Numerical Solution of Light Scattered from and Transmitted through a Rough Dielectric Surface with Applications to Periodic Roughness and Isolated Structures

Light scattering and transmission by rough surfaces are of considerable interest in a variety of applications including remote sensing and characterization of surfaces. In this work, the finite-difference time domain technique is applied to calculate the scattered and transmitted electromagnetic fields of an infinite periodic rough surface. The elements of Mueller matrix for scattered light are calculated by an integral of the near fields over a significant number of periods of the surface. The normalized Mueller matrix elements of the scattered light and the spatial distribution of the transmitted flux for a monolayer of micron-sized dielectric spheres on a silicon substrate are presented. The numerical results show that the nonzero Mueller matrix elements of the system of the monolayer of dielectric spheres on a silicon substrate have specific maxima at some scattering angles. These maxima may be used in characterization of the feature of the system. For light transmitted through the monolayer of spheres, our results show that the transmitted energy focuses around the ray passing through centers of the spheres. At other locations, the transmitted flux is very small. The technique also may be used to calculate the perturbance of the electromagnetic field due to the presence of an isolated structure on the substrate.
