Technique for improving solid state mosaic images

Method identifies and corrects mosaic image faults in solid state visual displays and opto-electronic presentation systems. Composite video signals containing faults due to defective sensing elements are corrected by a memory unit that contains the stored fault pattern and supplies the appropriate fault word to the blanking circuit.

Thermographic mosaic of Yellowstone National Park

An uncontrolled aerial thermographic mosaic of Yellowstone National Park was assembled from the videotape record of 13 individual thermographs obtained with linescan radiometers. Post mission processing of the videotape record rectified the nadir line to a topographic map base, corrected for v/h variations in adjacent flight lanes, corrected for yaw and pitch distortions, and distortions produced by nonlinearity of the side-wise scan. One of the purposes of the thermographic study was to delineate the areas of thermal emission (hot springs, geysers, etc.) throughout the Park, a study which could have great value in reconnaissance surveys of geothermal areas in remote regions or regions of high relief.

The OSO-8 mosaic graphite stellar X-ray polarimeter

The OSO 8 satellite, launched on June 21, 1975, contains two X-ray polarimeters. These polarimeters use mosaic crystals of graphite to yield polarization-sensitive Bragg reflection of stellar X-rays. The crystals reflect a narrow energy bandwidth centered at 2.6 and 5.2 keV. The polarimeter background signal is minimized by mounting the crystals on parabolic surfaces which focus the diffracted X-rays onto small-area beryllium-window proportional counters. This technique permits the observation of low-intensity X-ray sources and reduces the possibility of systematic background effects which could lead to a false signature of polarization. A description of the instrument is given, and preliminary results for the Crab Nebula and Cyg X-1 are presented.

The Viking Mosaic catalog, volume 1

Martian geographic location information for Viking Orbiter mosaic images is provided. The photographic sequences were chosen based upon image content. The footprinting task was carried out, post factor, in order to facilitate research activities. Early activities were centered around the examination of candidate landing sites.

Global multispectral mosaics of the icy Galilean satellites

Multispectral mosaics of the three icy Galilean satellites have been produced from low- to moderate-resolution Voyager images. The digital image data have been calibrated using preflight and in-flight calibration data, and reduced to normal albedos for four-color band passes, centered at 0.35, 0.41, 0.48, and 0.59 microns. The individual images have been geometrically corrected, mosaiked, and presented in a normal cylindrical map projection at a uniform scale of 8 km/pixel. Preliminary analysis of the normal albedo data shows that (1) the darkest terrains on the satellites are the dark regions on Callisto, (2) the brightest regions are bright plains regions on Europa and bright, fresh craters on Ganymede, (3) bright craters on Ganymede and its dark, cratered regions are both significantly brighter than comparable terrains on Callisto, and (4) Europa exhibits several distinct spectral units, with regions on the trailing hemisphere having lower relative ultraviolet spectral reflectance than areas on the leading hemisphere. This is consistent with proposals that Io-related plasma impact on Europa's trailing side has altered its optical properties.

Technology for large digital mosaics of Landsat data

Procedures and software for the digital mosaicking of Landsat data are discussed. It is noted that image processing in support of JPL's planetary program has furnished the software and procedures necessary to achieve digital image mosaicking of vidicon imagery using rigid projective geometry. The incorporation of ground-control points, by either manual or automatic ground-control point file identification, has yielded rms positional accuracies exceeding the National Map Accuracy Standards. Rotation to north vertical is effected at low computational cost. It is possible to cut input data frames in any arbitrary shape to remove cloud cover and accommodate terrain offset effects. In similar fashion, the final digital mosaic can be segmented arbitrarily to conform to user requirements. Information is presented on applications in Pennsylvania and Bolivia.

Electron lithography STAR design guidelines. Part 3: The mosaic transistor array applied to custom microprocessors. Part 4: Stores logic arrays, SLAs implemented with clocked CMOS

The Mosaic Transistor Array is an extension of the STAR system developed by NASA which has dedicated field cells designed to be specifically used in semicustom microprocessor applications. The Sandia radiation hard bulk CMOS process is utilized in order to satisfy the requirements of space flights. A design philosophy is developed which utilizes the strengths and recognizes the weaknesses of the Sandia process. A style of circuitry is developed which incorporates the low power and high drive capability of CMOS. In addition the density achieved is better than that for classic CMOS, although not as good as for NMOS. The basic logic functions for a data path are designed with compatible interface to the STAR grid system. In this manner either random logic or PLA type structures can be utilized for the control logic.

Mosaic wedge-and-strip arrays for large format microchannel plate detectors

The authors present a novel method for joining wedge-and-strip patterns on single anodes in a mosaic array. With only a modest increase in complexity over three-conductor anodes currently in use, the ultimate detector position resolution can be significantly improved, and large-format microchannel plate detectors with pore-size-limited resolution are made possible. The problem of the transition from one anode to the next has been solved with a novel linear encoding scheme, which exhibits essentially distortionless behavior at boundaries parallel to the conducting elements and only slight distortion at the orthogonal boundaries. The ultimate resolution for two anode designs, one designed for large-format imaging and the other for high-resolution spectroscopy, is also predicted.

Computer Assembles Mosaics Of Satellite-SAR Imagery

Digital image-processing system assembles maplike mosaic images of large areas of Earth from overlapping images of smaller areas generated by spaceborne synthetic-aperture radar (SAR). Automatically registers and blends smaller images with each other. Eliminates need for time-consuming, tedious manual processing. Modifiable to accept images from spaceborne optical sensors.

Making Mosaics Of SAR Imagery

Spaceborne synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) images useful for mapping of planets and investigations in Earth sciences. Produces multiframe mosaic by combining images along ground track, in adjacent cross-track swaths, or in ascending and descending passes. Images registered with geocoded maps such as ones produced by MAPJTC (NPO-17718), required as input. Minimal intervention by operator required. MOSK implemented on DEC VAX 11/785 computer running VMS 4.5. Most subroutines in FORTRAN, but three in MAXL and one in APAL.

AFGL ten micron mosaic array spectrometer: Recent results

Recent measurements were made with a novel mosaic array prism spectrometer on long period variable stars of carbon and oxygen-rich atmospheres. These stars have generally large IR excesses and show strong SiC and silicate emission features, respectively. A comparison is provided by published spectra obtained with the IRAS Low Resolution Spectrometer. Emission feature equivalent widths are independent of the absolute photometric level of the spectra and provide information on the relative variation of the feature and continuum fluxes between the epochs of the space and groundbased observations.
