Balancing Impedance and Controllability in Response Reconstruction

One concept in smart dynamic testing is to match the impedance that a component experiences between test and the environment of interest, but this begs the question: how much of an impedance match is needed and could there be too much? In a prior work, the authors performed MIMO testing with a small component connected to various assemblies, each of which had a differing degree of similarity to the actual flight boundary conditions. The results showed that the fidelity of the response at locations away from the control accelerometers was highly sensitive to the impedance. This work presents further case studies to explore these ideas. Subsequent tests are presented for an assembly that presumably matched the impedance even better, and which was also much more flexible, and the results obtained are even worse than when no attention was given to the impedance. Hence, the work presented here suggests that one should seek a balance between 1.) matching the impedance and 2.) improving the controllability of the component of interest. The concepts are explored using both test data of a benchmark component, for which the environment of interest was recorded as the component flew on a sounding rocket.

Shape-constrained Input Estimation for Efficient Multi-shaker Vibration Testing

Multi-shaker vibration testing is gaining interest from structural dynamics test engineers as it can provide a much more accurate match to complicated field vibration responses than traditional single-axis shaker tests. However, the force capabilities of the small modal shakers typically used in multi-shaker vibration tests has limited the achievable response levels. To date, most multi-shaker vibration tests have been performed using a variety of standard, commercially-available control systems. While these control systems are adequate for a wide range of multiple-input/multiple-output tests, their control algorithms have not been tailored for the specific problem of multi-shaker vibration tests: efficiently coordinating the various shakers to work together to achieve a desired response. Here, a new input estimation algorithm is developed and demonstrated using simulations and actual test data. This algorithm, dubbed shape-constrained input estimation, is shown to effectively coordinate multiple shakers using a set of constraint vectors based on the deflection shapes of the test structure. This is accomplished by using the singular vector shapes of the system frequency response matrix, which allows the constraint vectors to automatically change as a function of frequency. Simulation and test results indicate a significant reduction in the input forces required to achieve a desired response. Finally, the results indicate that shape-constrained input estimation is an effective method to achieve higher response levels from limited shaker forces which will enable higher level multi-shaker vibration tests to be performed.

Network-Wide Traffic Signal Control Using Bilinear System Modeling and Adaptive Optimization

This study proposes a new multi-input multi-output optimal bilinear signal control method in which a bilinear dynamic model approximation is used to capture the nonlinear dynamics of the urban traffic networks. With signal green time splits as the control input and traffic delay changes as the output for each intersections in the network, a bilinear system model was developed, which, on the basis of linear system modeling, takes interactions among traffic delays and signal timing splits into consideration. Based on the bilinear system modeling framework, we conducted two steps in each time interval to derive traffic control strategies: (1) we used the normalized least-squared algorithm to estimate system parameters; and (2) we solved an online optimization problem to obtain the updated traffic control inputs for the signal timing that minimizes future traffic delays. We evaluated the proposed method in a microscopic traffic simulation environment (VISSIM) with a 35-intersection network of Bellevue city in Washington. Two different traffic demand patterns: (1) normal traffic demands; and (2) time-varying traffic demands were simulated to compare the performance of different control strategies. Experimental results show that (1) the proposed bilinear system model can better describe traffic system dynamics than linear-model based methods, such as our previously developed linear-quadratic regulator control; and (2) the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art signal control strategies, namely the max-pressure and the self-organizing traffic light control methods. We have also shown that the proposed method is applicable to all other possible network layouts and signal controller phasing structures.

Radiation Detection System Integration Using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Radios

This study describes the application development of multiple-input multiple-output radios to provide persistent mobile ad hoc network (MANET) for the Department of Homeland Security. By using Man Portable Unit (MPU5) fifth generation radios (manufactured by Persistent Systems) with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), an Android smartphone geospatial infrastructure and military situational awareness application, the Remote Sensing Laboratory has developed a MANET connectivity to monitor deployed nuclear/radiological search operation assets.
