Development testing of TSS-1 Deployer tether control system mechanisms

Successful tether deployment and retrieval, consistent with established control laws, is predicated upon statusing real time tether dynamic conditions. This paper reports on the initial phase of engineering tests performed on various components and subassemblies integral to the TSS-1 tether control system as part of the TSS Deployer. The tests were conducted as part of the tether control system development and verification plan to confirm the functionality and map the performance of the hardware in both ambient and environmental test conditions. The result of this development effort is a lessons-learned list and design upgrades to both the flight and test hardware and to the test methods and procedures.

Simplified Transactive Distribution Grids for Bulk Power System Mechanism Development

As distributed energy resources and smart devices become omnipresent in the electrical power grid, transactive energy control mechanisms are evolving. From real-time to day-ahead markets, these transactive energy algorithms involve more and more agents, whose behavior is going to affect the transmission and generation network. In order to study the interaction between the wholesale and retail energy markets, extensive co-simulations are performed. To be able to redesign, evaluate, and verify new control algorithms, the simulations need to provide results in a fast and reliable manner. This work has built and tested a transactive distribution grid model, the DSO-Stub, meant to offer a configurable distribution retail market while ensuring the computational burden is not significantly increased.

Spacecraft separation systems mechanisms: Characteristics/performance during high altitude flight test from NASA Wallops Station, Va.

The applications of various separation mechanisms to meet flight mission goals within the physical and environmental constraints of a single stage rocket test vehicle are considered. Each separation concept was selected from the numerous choices available on the basis of its unique requirement and the flight test vehicle incorporated several different concepts. Attention to specific requirements and thoroughness in design and testing were essential to success since there is no specific single answer to separation problems.

Solar Mesosphere Explorer optical-mechanical systems engineering

Mission overview of the Solar Mesosphere Explorer is presented along with design analysis and summaries of results. The Solar Mesosphere Explorer is a spin stabilized satellite carrying a complement of four Ebert-Fastie spectrometers and a four-channel Mersenne radiometer. Description of the spectrometer is given including a telescope and its aberrations. The radiometer is also described with consideration given to isothermal and thermal design, a Winston paraboloid, and optical tolerances. These five instruments are for measuring the earth's ozone density and distribution and providing quantitative data about those processes which govern the formation and destruction of ozone.

On-line pulse control for structural and mechanical systems

This paper studies the feasibility of using open-loop adaptive on-line pulse control for limiting the response of large linear multidegree of freedom systems subjected to general dynamic loading environments. Pulses of short durations are used to control the system when the system response exceeds a given threshold level. The pulse magnitudes are obtained in closed form, leading to large computational efficiencies when compared with optimal control theoretic methods. The technique is illustrated for a structural system subjected to earthquake-like base excitations.

Determining Chaotic Instabilities in Mechanical Systems

Theoretical developments enable suppression of chaotic structual motions. Theory enables prediction, avoidance, and suppression of chaotic vibrations in structures, especially using dynamic feedback stabilization. In new formulation, motion both repeatable and predictable.

Robotic influence in the conceptual design of mechanical systems in space and vice versa - A survey

A survey of methods using robotic devices to construct structural elements in space is presented. Two approaches to robotic construction are considered: one in which the structural elements are designed using conventional aerospace techniques which tend to constrain the function aspects of robotics and one in which the structural elements are designed from the conceptual stage with built-in robotic features. Examples are presented of structural building concepts using robotics, including the construction of the SP-100 nuclear reactor power system, a multimirror large aperture IR space telescope concept, retrieval and repair in space, and the Flight Telerobotic Servicer.
