A single column separation method for barium isotope analysis of geologic and hydrologic materials with complex matrices

Abstract The increasing significance of barium (Ba) in environmental and geologic research in recent years has led to interest in the application of the Ba isotopic composition as a tracer for natural materials with complex matrices. Most Ba isotope measurement techniques require separation of Ba from the rest of sample prior to analysis. This paper presents a method using readily available materials and disposable columns that effectively separates Ba from a range of geologic and hydrologic materials, including carbonate minerals, silicate rocks, barite, river water, and fluids with high total dissolved solids and organic content such as oil and gas brines, rapidly and without need for an additional cleanup column. The technique involves off-the-shelf columns and cation exchange resin and a two-reagent elution that uses 2.5 N HCl followed by addition of 2.0 N HNO 3 . We present data to show that major matrix elements from almost any natural material are separated from Ba in a single column pass, and that the method also effectively reduces or eliminates isobaric interferences from lanthanum and cerium.

Data sets for Unraveling Iron Oxides as Abiotic Catalysts of Organic Phosphorus Recycling in Soil and Sediment Matrices

In biogeochemical phosphorus cycling, iron oxide minerals are acknowledged as strong adsorbents of inorganic and organic phosphorus species. The dephosphorylation of organic phosphorus is attributed only to biological processes, but iron oxides could also catalyze this hydrolytic cleavage. Limited evidence of this abiotic catalysis has relied on monitoring inorganic phosphate in solution, thereby ignoring iron oxides as both catalysts and adsorbents. Here we apply high-resolution mass spectrometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to characterize dissolved and particulate phosphorus species, respectively. In soil and sediment samples reacted with ribonucleotides, we uncover the abiotic production of particulate inorganic phosphate associated specifically with iron oxides. Experiments with various organic phosphorus compounds revealed up to 12-fold greater catalytic and adsorption reactivities with iron oxides than with the silicate and aluminosilicate minerals identified in the environmental samples. Remarkably, we obtained dephosphorylation rates by the iron oxides that are within reported enzymatic rates in soils. However, phosphorus cycle models do not yet include a quantitative account of the abiotic evolution of inorganic phosphate from organic phosphorus trapped on iron oxides in environmental matrices. Our findings imply a missing abiotic axiom for organic phosphorus mineralization in the phosphorus cycle.

Microbial potentiometric sensor technology for real-time detecting and monitoring of toxic metals in aquatic matrices

Considering that toxic metals can affect metabolic processes in microorganisms adversely, it can be hypothesized that these metals in water matrices would induce a decrease in metabolic activity of the biofilm microorganisms populating the surface of a sensing electrode, which could be registered as a change in the open-circuit potential (OCP) generated by the biofilm microorganisms. The goal of this study was to test this hypothesis and demonstrate the underlying principle that microbial potentiometric sensor (MPS) technology could be used for long-term and real-time monitoring and detection of rapid changes in metal concentrations in realistic aquatic environments. To address the goal, four objective were addressed: (1) a batch reactor with three graphite-based MPS electrodes was fabricated; (2) a set of single-ion solutions and one multiple ion solution were prepared reflecting realistic concentrations of metals found in electroplating wastewaters; (3) the responses of the MPS to the simultaneous presence of multiple toxic metal ions in a single solution were measured; and (4) the changes of the MPS signals to the presence of individual metal ion solutions were examined. While the hypothesis was validated, the study also revealed that the MPS was sufficiently sensitive to not only detect, but also quantify, toxic metal ion concentrations in aqueous solutions. The coefficients of determination, which were R 2 > 0.995, and responsiveness of <1 μmol/L for some toxic metal cations, strongly support the performance of MPS technology in the echelons of expensive analytical tools capable detecting and measuring trace elements. The magnitude of the MPS response was toxic metal specific. When the molar concertation normalizes the inhibition portion of the signal area, the assessed sensitivity order was: Se>Cd>Pb>Ag>Ni> Zn. The study provides valuable information for enforcement agents, environmental professionals, and wastewater treatment operators, so toxic metal pollution and its detrimental impacts can be prevented and mitigated.

Designing linear lattices for round beam in electron storage rings using the solution by linear matrices analysis

For some synchrotron light source beamline applications, a round beam is preferable to a flat one. A conventional method of obtaining round beam in an electron storage ring is to shift its tune close to a linear difference resonance. The linearly coupled beam dynamics is analyzed with perturbation theories, which have certain limitations. In this paper, we adopt the Solution by LInear Matrices (SLIM) analysis to calculate exact beam sizes to design round beam lattices. The SLIM analysis can deal with a generally linearly coupled accelerator lattice. The effects of various coupling sources on beam emittances and sizes can be studied within a self-consistent frame. Both the on- and off-resonance schemes to obtain round beams are explained with examples. The SLIM formalism for two widely used magnet models: combined-function bending magnets, and planar wigglers and undulators, is also derived.

Generalized Toeplitz–Hankel matrices and their application to a layered electron gas

We extend the standard result for the eigenspectrum of the Toeplitz matrix C ij = e –κ|i–j| with 0 ≤ i,j ≤ N and κ ϵ C to a combination of a Toeplitz matrix and a Hankel matrix. We apply this result to find the plasma modes of a layered assembly of a 2-dimensional electron gas. We find a sum rule relating the geometric mean of the frequencies of the plasma modes to the determinant of this Toeplitz matrix, for which an analytical expression is obtained. Here, we apply the same technique to the generalized case when the layers are not evenly spaced, where the corresponding matrix is not a Toeplitz-Hankel combination. Despite this fact, it is possible to find properties of the eigenspectrum, and the eigenmodes are localized to a few layers instead of extending across the system.

Calabi-Yau CFTs and random matrices

Using numerical methods for finding Ricci-flat metrics, we explore the spectrum of local operators in two-dimensional conformal field theories defined by sigma models on Calabi-Yau targets at large volume. Focusing on the examples of K3 and the quintic, we show that the spectrum, averaged over a region in complex structure moduli space, possesses the same statistical properties as the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrix theory.

Landau diagrams in AdS and S-matrices from conformal correlators

Quantum field theories in AdS generate conformal correlation functions on the boundary, and in the limit where AdS is nearly flat one should be able to extract an S-matrix from such correlators. We discuss a particularly simple position-space procedure to do so. It features a direct map from boundary positions to (on-shell) momenta and thereby relates cross ratios to Mandelstam invariants. This recipe succeeds in several examples, includes the momentum-conserving delta functions, and can be shown to imply the two proposals in based on Mellin space and on the OPE data. Interestingly the procedure does not always work: the Landau singularities of a Feynman diagram are shown to be part of larger regions, to be called ‘bad regions’, where the flat-space limit of the Witten diagram diverges. To capture these divergences we introduce the notion of Landau diagrams in AdS. As in flat space, these describe on-shell particles propagating over large distances in a complexified space, with a form of momentum conservation holding at each bulk vertex. As an application we recover the anomalous threshold of the four-point triangle diagram at the boundary of a bad region.

Compact representations of structured BFGS matrices

For general large-scale optimization problems compact representations exist in which recursive quasi-Newton update formulas are represented as compact matrix factorizations. For problems in which the objective function contains additional structure, recent structured quasi-Newton methods exploit available second-derivative information and approximate unavailable second derivatives. Here, this article develops the compact representations of two structured Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno update formulas. The compact representations enable efficient limited memory and initialization strategies. Two limited memory line search algorithms are described for which extensive numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithms, including comparisons to IPOPT on large machine learning problems, and to L-BFGS on a real world large scale ptychographic imaging application.

The j and k dependencies of the line coupling and line mixing effects: Theoretical studies of the relaxation matrices of N 2 -broadened CH 3 D

Line coupling and line mixing effects in parallel and perpendicular bands of CH 3 D perturbed by N 2 have been studied. The work focuses on exhibiting the j and k dependencies of these two processes. The calculations were based on a previously reported anisotropic intermolecular potential including both the long-range multipole, induction, and dispersion forces and a short-range atom-atom model. Throughout this work, it is shown that components with L 1 = 3 of the atom-atom model are dominant contributions to the diffusion operator. As a consequence, in comparison with other molecular systems such as the CH 3 Cl-N 2 and CH 3 I-N 2 , theoretically predicted line coupling and line mixing effects exhibit completely new j and k dependencies. In general, the theoretically calculated halfwidths and intra-doublets’ off-diagonal elements of the relaxation matrix are in reasonable agreement with measurements.
