Polyolefin plastic waste hydroconversion to fuels, lubricants, and waxes: a comparative study

Hydroconversion technologies have surged to the forefront of deconstructing plastic waste. Recent studies have been performed over several catalysts with varying conditions and plastics that make comparisons difficult. We compile and compare data from the literature by introducing various metrics and perform a simple energy analysis. We draw mechanistic similarities to and differences from the past literature on small alkane hydroconversion and leverage the former to propose standard approaches to tune product selectivity. We exemplify the plastics materials gap and the challenges it creates. Lastly, we discuss the current limitations and suggest future work.

Development of a self-lubricating high-efficiency hybrid seal composed of carbon nanotube-coated metal meshes for CSP turbomachinery (SETO CPS #36333 Final Report)

In turbomachinery, internal leakage flow accounts for up to 3% of the total thermodynamic cycle energy loss. Tradeoff must be made between the sealing efficiency (smaller clearance) and the friction and wear issues for interfering with the shaft (larger clearance). This ORNL-Danfoss joint effort developed a novel hybrid seal composed of carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated metal meshes. The CNT growth process was based on a self-catalyzing chemical vapor deposition and these multiwall CNTs were well aligned with high crystallinity. This hybrid material structure takes advantage of the CNT’s low-friction nature and uses the metal mesh as an extendable backbone. Full-scale experimental seals were designed, fabricated, and optimized for sealing performance and durability. The CNT-coated metal mesh seal demonstrated superior gas sealing efficiency to the baseline labyrinth seal and significantly improved shaft surface protection compared with the state-of-the-art superalloy brush seal on the static rig and full-scale compressor dynamometer tests. The CNT-metal mesh seal is low-cost and scalable and can potentially benefit wide applications, including CSP and other power generation, marine, automotive, and HVAC.

Durability Study of a High-Pressure Common Rail Fuel Injection System Using Lubricity Additive-Dosed Gasoline-Like Fuel—Improved Endurance with Upgraded Hardware

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) is a promising combustion technology that can help the commercial transportation sector achieve operational flexibility and meet upcoming criteria pollutant regulations. However, high-pressure fuel injection systems (>1000 bar) are needed to enable GCI and fully realize its benefits compared to conventional diesel combustion. This work is a continuation of previous durability studies that identified three key technical risks after running gasoline-like fuel through a heavy-duty, common rail injection system: (i) cavitation damage to the inlet check valve of the high-pressure pump, (ii) loss of injector fueling capacity, (iii) cavitation erosion of the injector nozzle holes. Upgraded hardware solutions were tested on a consistent 400- to 800-hour NATO durability cycle with the same gasoline-like fuel as previous studies. The upgraded pump showed no signs of abnormal wear or cavitation damage to the inlet check valve. In contrast to previous studies, there were no signs of pump performance degradation observed after 400 hours of testing. Material selection and design upgrades were also made to the injector which, only showed a 6.5% loss in fueling capacity after 800 hours of durability testing compared to 49.3% previously. Finally, geometric nozzle hole features such as higher inlet radius of curvature and higher K-factor were found to correlate with reduced cavitation erosion. However, mitigation of eccentric radial needle motion (i.e., wobble) is likely needed to further suppress cavitation. In general, the results from this study indicate there are viable hardware-based solutions for improving the endurance of high-pressure systems when running with gasoline-like fuel.

Catalytic upcycling of polyolefins into lubricants

A method of upcycling polymers to useful hydrocarbon materials. A catalyst with nanoparticles on a substrate selectively docks and cleaves longer hydrocarbon chains over shorter hydrocarbon chains. The nanoparticles exhibit an edge to facet ratio to provide for more interactions with the facets.

Orbiting scroll device lubrication

A scroll device includes a fixed scroll with an idler shaft bearing, an orbiting scroll with another idler shaft bearing; and an eccentric idler shaft having first and second arms extending in opposite directions and ending at first and second ends, the first and second arms supported by the fixed scroll idler shaft bearing and the orbiting scroll idler shaft bearing, respectively. The eccentric idler shaft has a hollow core extending from the first end to the second end, with at least one channel extending through the first arm and enabling fluid communication between the hollow core and the at least one first bearing, and at least one second channel extending through the second arm and enabling fluid communication between the hollow core and the least one second bearing.
