Analysis of a Radiation Model of the Shuttle Space Suit

The extravehicular activity (EVA) required to assemble the International Space Station (ISS) will take approximately 1500 hours with 400 hours of EVA per year in operations and maintenance. With the Space Station at an inclination of 51.6 deg the radiation environment is highly variable with solar activity being of great concern. Thus, it is important to study the dose gradients about the body during an EVA to help determine the cancer risk associated with the different environments the ISS will encounter. In this paper we are concerned only with the trapped radiation (electrons and protons). Two different scenarios are looked at: the first is the quiet geomagnetic periods in low Earth orbit (LEO) and the second is during a large solar particle event in the deep space environment. This study includes a description of how the space suit's computer aided design (CAD) model was developed along with a description of the human model. Also included is a brief description of the transport codes used to determine the total integrated dose at several locations within the body. Finally, the results of the transport codes when applied to the space suit and human model and a brief description of the results are presented.

Development of an unsteady water tunnel.

A detailed description is given of an unsteady hydrodynamic flow facility located at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama. This facility is used to measure unsteady pressures and forces and to acquire hydrogen bubble flow visualization data pertaining to bodies submerged in different types of accelerating flow. Various data acquisition systems are delineated along with typical experimental results acquired using cylindrical models. The method of facility operation and theoretical design considerations are shown along with a comparison between calculations and experimental results. This comparison indicates that the theoretical design procedures sufficiently represented the physical phenomenon for facility design.

Mean flow and noise measurements in a Mach 3.5 pilot quiet tunnel

The use of Mach 3.5 two-dimensional rapid expansion nozzle for wind tunnel testing at supersonic speeds and low noise conditions encountered in high altitude flights is described. The supersonic pilot quiet tunnel is located at the NASA Langley Research Center and a description of the facility is provided, along with instrumentation and noise measurement test data at 30, 50, and 75 psia. The mean pitot pressure distributions, rms noise levels, the effect of unit Reynolds number, wall waviness, wall contaminants, and the effects of closing the bleed valve are analyzed. Typical laminar and turbulent spectra are presented, along with a summary of the effect of slot throat adjustment on the power spectra. Comparisons are made of the power spectra with the bleed valve open and closed, and of the rms fluctuating pressures with levels from conventional nozzles, and the performance capabilities are evaluated for use in transition studies.

Runway Exit Designs for Capacity Improvement Demonstrations. Phase 1: Algorithm Development

A description and results are presented of a study to locate and design rapid runway exits under realistic airport conditions. The study developed a PC-based computer simulation-optimization program called REDIM (runway exit design interactive model) to help future airport designers and planners to locate optimal exits under various airport conditions. The model addresses three sets of problems typically arising during runway exit design evaluations. These are the evaluations of existing runway configurations, addition of new rapid runway turnoffs, and the design of new runway facilities. The model is highly interactive and allows a quick estimation of the expected value of runway occupancy time. Aircraft populations and airport environmental conditions are among the multiple inputs to the model to execute a viable runway location and geometric design solution. The results presented suggest that possible reductions on runway occupancy time (ROT) can be achieved with the use of optimally tailored rapid runway designs for a given aircraft population. Reductions of up to 9 to 6 seconds are possible with the implementation of 30 m/sec variable geometry exits.

Objective Classification of Radar Profile Types, and Their Relationship to Lightning Occurrence

A cluster analysis technique is used to identify 16 "archetypal" vertical radar profile types from a large, globally representative sample of profiles from the TRMM Precipitation Radar. These include nine convective types (7 of these deep convective) and seven stratiform types (5 of these clearly glaciated). Radar profile classification provides an alternative to conventional deep convective storm metrics, such as 30 dBZ echo height, maximum reflectivity or VIL. As expected, the global frequency of occurrence of deep convective profile types matches satellite-observed total lightning production, including to very small scall local features. Each location's "mix" of profile types provides an objective description of the local convective spectrum, and in turn, is a first step in objectively classifying convective regimes. These classifiers are tested as inputs to a neural network which attempts to predict lightning occurrence based on radar-only storm observations, and performance is compared with networks using traditional radar metrics as inputs.

A description of an automated database comparison program

An interactive FORTRAN computer comparison program designed to automatically locate regions of incongruity between two databases is described. The software, guided by user input parameters, incrementally compares the databases and generates plots of these regions in the databases which do not compare within a specified tolerance. Additionally, tools are provided within the software which enable the user to statistically reduce the number of data points in the databases compared. To facilitate the description of these tools, the procedures used to compare two aerodynamic databases for an F-18A fighter aircraft are detailed.

SIM-Lite Instrument Description, Operation and Performance

SIM Lite Astrometric Observatory, a space borne mission to be located in a solar Earth-trailing orbit, will conduct high precision differential astrometry. During the 5-year mission, SIM Lite will search about 60 nearby Sun-like stars for exoplanets of mass down to one Earth mass, in the Habitable Zone of those stars. In addition, SIM Lite will survey the architecture of planetary systems of about 1000 stars of all ages and types. SIM Lite will also build a 4 micro-arc-second astrometric grid and perform global astrometry on a variety of astrophysics objects. The instrument consists of two Michelson stellar interferometers and a precision telescope. The Science interferometer is composed of two 50 cm collectors separated by a 6 meter baseline. The technology development was completed in 2005. The mission is now ready for full flight implementation.

UHURU results on galactic X-ray sources.

Consideration of the nature of the galactic X-ray sources located with the aid of the UHURU satellite. A brief description is given of the X-ray emission of the Galaxy as a whole. The general properties of sources similar to Sco X-1 (called Sco X-1-like sources) are discussed, as well as the properties of three pulsating sources showing evidence of a binary nature. Finally, some new results concerning two objects - GX263+3 (2U0900-40) and the X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud (2U0115-73) - which both show evidence of a binary nature, yet have some of the properties of the Sco X-1-like objects are presented. The links noted between the Sco X-1-like objects and the pulsating binary sources lead to the suggestion that all of the galactic X-ray sources (except supernova remnants) may in fact be binaries.

Ray trajectories in a torus: An application of MACSYMA to a complex numerical computation

The study of ray trajectories of plasma waves in a torodial geometry using MACSYMA is an example of how symbolic, numerical, and graphical facilities can be used in concert to accomplish a complex computational goal. Computational features of this study which are of particular significance include: the derivation of code (i.e. writing functions to generate program fragments), the use of array functions to simplify the specification of a numerical iteration scheme, and the graphical presentation of the results. Mathematically, this study originates in the solution of a linear inhomogeneous partial differential equation in 3 dimensions by the method of characteristics. While it is possible to describe this equation compactly by using vector notation, and by specifying the spatial variation of the coefficients in terms of intermediate parameters, the transformation of the equation into a form amenable to solution is very tedious. A MACSYMA program is presented for obtaining description of the rf field structure excited by a waveguide located at the edge of a toroidal plasma confinement device.

LSA field test

Degradation tests indicate that electrical degradation is not a slow monotonically increasing phenomenon as originally thought but occurs abruptly as the result of some traumatic event. This finding has led to a change in the test philosophy. A discussion of this change is presented along with a summary of degradation and failure data from all the sites and results from a variety of special tests. New instrumentation for in-field measurements are described. Field testing activity was expanded by the addition of twelve remote sites located as far away as Alaska and the Canal Zone. Descriptions of the new sites are included.
