Some thoughts on the management of large, complex international space ventures

Management issues relevant to the development and deployment of large international space ventures are discussed with particular attention given to previous experience. Management approaches utilized in the past are labeled as either simple or complex, and signs of efficient management are examined. Simple approaches include those in which experiments and subsystems are developed for integration into spacecraft, and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project is given as an example of a simple multinational approach. Complex approaches include those for ESA's Spacelab Project and the Space Station Freedom in which functional interfaces cross agency and political boundaries. It is concluded that individual elements of space programs should be managed by individual participating agencies, and overall configuration control is coordinated by level with a program director acting to manage overall objectives and project interfaces.

Generative memory for lifelong machine learning

Techniques are disclosed for training machine learning systems. An input device receives training data comprising pairs of training inputs and training labels. A generative memory assigns training inputs to each archetype task of a plurality of archetype tasks, each archetype task representative of a cluster of related tasks within a task space and assigns a skill to each archetype task. The generative memory generates, from each archetype task, auxiliary data comprising pairs of auxiliary inputs and auxiliary labels. A machine learning system trains a machine learning model to apply a skill assigned to an archetype task to training and auxiliary inputs assigned to the archetype task to obtain output labels corresponding to the training and auxiliary labels associated with the training and auxiliary inputs assigned to the archetype task to enable scalable learning to obtain labels for new tasks for which the machine learning model has not previously been trained.

Alfvén eigenmode classification based on ECE diagnostics at DIII-D using deep recurrent neural networks

Modern tokamaks have achieved significant fusion production, but further progress towards steady-state operation has been stymied by a host of kinetic and MHD instabilities. Control and identification of these instabilities is often complicated, warranting the application of data-driven methods to complement and improve physical understanding. In particular, Alfvén eigenmodes are a class of ubiquitous mixed kinetic and MHD instabilities that are important to identify and control because they can lead to loss of confinement and potential damage to the walls of a plasma device. In the present work, we use reservoir computing networks to classify Alfvén eigenmodes in a large labeled database of DIII-D discharges, covering a broad range of operational parameter space. However, despite the large parameter space, we show excellent classification and prediction performance, with an average hit rate of 91% and false alarm ratio of 7%, indicating promise for future implementation with additional diagnostic data and consolidation into a real-time control strategy.

Raw WRF model output files from a LASSO-CACTI simulation

The raw model output from a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulation from the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) deep-convection scenario for the Cloud, Aerosol, and Complex Terrain Interactions (CACTI) field campaign. The LASSO-CACTI simulations span grid spacings from 7.5 km to 100 m through the use of four nested domains, labeled d1 through d4. The simulations are of convection near the Sierras de Córdoba mountain range, roughly centered on the ARM Mobile Facility. More information can be found at https://www.arm.gov/capabilities/modeling/lasso. The raw model output is in netCDF format as output by the WRF model, i.e., the “wrfout” files, with the files renamed for archival purposes.

WRF restart files for a LASSO-CACTI simulation

The restart files from a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulation from the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) deep-convection scenario for the Cloud, Aerosol, and Complex Terrain Interactions (CACTI) field campaign. The LASSO-CACTI simulations span grid spacings from 7.5 km to 100 m through the use of four nested domains, labeled d1 through d4. Restarts are available for the LES domains, i.e., d3 and d4. The simulations are of convection near the Sierras de Córdoba mountain range, roughly centered on the ARM Mobile Facility. More information can be found at https://www.arm.gov/capabilities/modeling/lasso. The restart files are output every 30 minutes in netCDF format as output by the WRF model, i.e., the “wrfrst” files, with the files renamed for archival purposes.

Subsetted model output for aerosol-related variables from a LASSO-CACTI WRF simulation

Aerosol-related model output from a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulation from the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) deep-convection scenario for the Cloud, Aerosol, and Complex Terrain Interactions (CACTI) field campaign. This version of the output is a collection of variables subsetted from the raw WRF output to reduce the file overhead for users not needing the full raw dataset. The subset files are in netCDF format with the height-based variables on the raw, model eta levels. The aerosol properties are consistent with the Thompson aerosol-aware cloud microphysics scheme where the simulated aerosol are proxies for representative “water friendly” and “ice friendly” aerosol.
