Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Cyclic Voltammetry Methods for Monitoring SmCl 3 Concentration in Molten Eutectic LiCl-KCl

Molten salt solutions consisting of eutectic LiCl-KCl and concentrations of samarium chloride (0.5 to 3.0 wt%) at 500 C were analyzed using both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The CV technique gave the average diffusion coefficient for Sm 3+ over the concentration range. Equipped with Sm 3+ diffusion coefficient, the Randles-Sevcik equation predicted Sm 3+ concentration values that agree with the given experimental values. From CV measurements; the anodic, cathodic, and half-peak potentials were identified and subsequently used as a parameter to acquire EIS spectra. A six-element Voigt model was used to model the EIS data in terms of resistance-time constant pairs. The lowest resistances were observed at the half-peak potential with the associated resistance-time constant pairs characterizing the reversible reaction between Sm 3+ and Sm 2+ . By extrapolation, the Voigt model estimated the polarization resistance and established a polarization resistance-concentration relationship.

Spectro-electrochemistry of vanadium ions in LiCl-KCl-VCl2,3

Owing to their relatively high thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, and low radiation heating and embrittlement properties, vanadium (V) alloys are being considered for fusion blanket structural materials. As such, the fundamental behavior of these materials, including the speciation of their corrosion products in molten lithium salts, must be elucidated to enable quantitative lifetime prediction. Yuan et al. [REF#1] demonstrated the reduction and oxidation of vanadium ions in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic salt using a tungsten wire, indicating the possibility of metallic vanadium reduction from V3+ negative potentials

CFD modeling of natural circulation in LiCl-KCl molten salt closed loop

Characterizing flow within a molten salt closed-loop system is crucial for assessing system requirements, evaluating performance, and identifying potential flaws. Direct flow measurement using instrumentation is challenging due to extreme environmental conditions and the limitations associated with measuring molten salt flow under natural convection. Here, this study aims to provide comprehensive insights into the thermal-hydraulic behavior of a closed loop, with a particular focus on temperature distribution and velocity prediction. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model demonstrated the capability to effectively simulate and predict both temperature distributions and flow velocities within the molten salt loop. The CFD model's predictive capability was validated by its ability to replicate temperature measurements under varying boundary conditions. The analysis revealed that the CFD model tends to underpredict temperatures in the cold leg and overpredict them in the hot leg, highlighting the need for continuous model refinement and acknowledging the limitations of using a steady-state approach. Furthermore, the potential of using external temperature measurements to estimate internal molten salt temperatures and predict flow velocity was explored, revealing that this approach could introduce up to a 5.5% error in flow velocity calculations. Line probes mapping temperature distributions across the tube's cross-section and molten salt provided valuable insights into temperature gradients, emphasizing the need for a thermal conductivity equation for molten salt with lower uncertainty to achieve more accurate temperature predictions of the system.

Modeling Europium (II/III) ion solvation in the LiCl-KCl eutectic mixture with polarizable force fields

Here, the solvation processes of Europium (II/III) ions within the molten salt eutectic mixture, 3LiCl-2KCl, are investigated over temperatures ranging from 673 K to 1173 K. New polarizable ion force fields are proposed to model Europium ions in a molten salt eutectic mixture with a goal of accurately capturing the underlying physics in the solutions. In contrast to rigid-ion models, the polarizable Drude model with an adjusted WBK (Wang-Buckingham) force field significantly improves predictions for diffusion coefficients, the average diffusion activation energy, and changes in excess ion chemical potential and partial molar entropy, producing good agreement with experimental measurements.

Local Coordination Environment of 3d and 4d Transition Metal Ions in LiCl-KCl Eutectic Mixture

In this study, the structure and coordination environment of two 3d transition elements (Ni and Cr) is investigated in a molten chloride salt system. Electronic absorption spectroscopy was employed to elucidate their coordination environment in 3LiCl-2KCl eutectic salt, as a function of temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) modeling was used to determine the coordination environment of the transition metal species in the eutectic composition as well as the optical spectra computationally. The Ni 2+ and Cr 3+ exist in a tetrahedral and octahedral coordination environment, respectively, in eutectic salt. The spectra thus obtained were compared with the experimental data; a reasonable qualitative agreement was obtained between experimental and computational Ni 2+ and Cr 3+ spectra, and the coordination of both elements in the eutectic composition were in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined results. Computational results were also obtained for two 4d elements, Mo 3+ and Nb 3+ , with both quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) and hybrid functional optical spectra indicating octahedral coordination.

Grain size effect on corrosion behavior of Inconel 625 film against molten MgCl 2 -NaCl-KCl salt

This study evaluated the grain size effect of Inconel 625 film against molten chloride salt. It is found that larger grain size Inconel 625 exhibits better corrosion resistance by reducing Cr depletion. ~ 2 nm surface NiO layer of Inconel 625 is incapable of compensating the negative effects from more initiation corrosion sites. Mo is the least likely leached element and its enrichment occurs in Cr-depleted regions as a result of Mo diffusion. Mg and Cl are two most seen salt elements in all corroded samples, while K and Na only attack Inconel 625 with the smallest grain size.

Tuning the Morphology and Electronic Properties of Single-Crystal LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4-δ : Exploring the Influence of LiCl–KCl Molten Salt Flux Composition and Synthesis Temperature

Single-crystal materials have played a unique role in the development of high-performance cathode materials for Li batteries due to their favorable chemomechanical stability. The molten salt synthesis method has become one of the most prominent techniques used to synthesize single-crystal layered and spinel materials. In this work, the molten salt synthesis method is used as a technique to tune both the morphology and Mn 3+ content of high-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathodes. The resulting materials are thoroughly characterized by a suite of analytical techniques, including synchrotron X-ray core-level spectroscopy, which are sensitive to the material properties on multiple length scales. Furthermore, the multidimensional characterization allows us to build a materials library according to the molten salt phase diagram as well as to establish the relationship among synthesis, material properties, and battery performance. The results of this work show that the Mn 3+ content is primarily dependent on the synthesis temperature and increases as the temperature is increased. Additionally, the particle morphology is mostly dependent on the composition of the molten salt flux, which can be tailored to obtain well-defined octahedrons enclosed by (111) facets, plates with predominant ($11\tilde{2}$) facets, irregularly shaped particles, or mixtures of these. The electrochemical measurements indicate that the Mn 3+ content has a larger contribution to the battery performance of LNMO than do morphological characteristics and that a significant amount of Mn 3+ could become detrimental to the battery performance. However, with similar Mn 3+ contents, morphology still plays a role in influencing the battery cycle life and rate performance. The insights of molten salt synthesis parameters on the formation of LNMO, with deconvolution of the roles of Mn 3+ and morphology, are crucial to continuing studies in the rational design of LNMO cathode materials for high-energy Li batteries.
