ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ULTRASONIC IMPACT TREATMENT ON RESIDUAL STRESS PROFILES IN DISSIMILAR WELDED JOINTS

Residual stresses (RS) induced during welding processes are a critical concern in materials engineering, as they can significantly impair the mechanical performance of components by reducing fatigue strength and tensile load capacity. This challenge is especially pronounced in dissimilar metal welds (DMWs), where variations in thermal expansion properties between the joined alloys exacerbate the formation of tensile RS. Conventional post-weld heat treatments, though effective for homogeneous materials, often require substantial energy, specialized equipment, and extensive processing time, making them less practical for DMW applications. Thus, there is a clear need for innovative, energy-efficient techniques to mitigate these detrimental stresses. This study investigates ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) as a possible alternative for mitigating tensile RS in both similar and dissimilar metal welds. To evaluate UIT’s effectiveness, neutron diffraction (ND) was employed as a nondestructive technique to quantify RS in three orthogonal directions—longitudinal, transverse, and normal. The results showed that UIT significantly reduced peak tensile RS, particularly in the longitudinal direction, by up to 180 MPa in similar welds and up to 150 MPa in dissimilar welds. Given the limited literature on UIT application in DMWs, this work contributes valuable data on stress redistribution mechanisms and highlights UIT’s potential as a practical stress-relief method. The findings lay the groundwork for further investigations aimed at optimizing process parameters and understanding long-term performance in welded joints.

Sulfur Species in Zinc-Rich Condylar Zones of a Rat Temporomandibular Joint

We performed synchrotron-based micro-X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (µ-XANES) coupled with micro-X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) for the identification of elements that included biometal zinc (Zn) and nonmetal sulfur (S) (and its species) in the condylar zones of a rat temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Zone-specific spatial localization of biometal Zn and nonmetal S from a materials viewpoint when correlated with hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) (a surrogate for tissue oxygenation) can provide insights into Zn-specific redox pathways at the vulnerable subchondral interface. Histologic localization of Zn, HIF-1α, and sulfur-rich proteoglycans (PGs) were mapped using an optical microscope. The µ-XRF maps coupled with site-specific micro-X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD) patterns were used to underline Zn-incorporated biological apatite in the subchondral bone and the bone of a rat TMJ condyle. Results demonstrated an association between Zn, PG, and HIF-1α histologic maps with µ-XRF, µ-XANES, and µ-XRD data and provided insights into plausible biological S species in Zn-enriched zones of a rat TMJ condyle. Spatially localized Zn and S underscore their roles in cell and tissue functions in a zone-specific manner. Elemental Zn with organic and inorganic S species at the cartilage-bone interface and the biomineral phase of Zn-enriched biological apatite from subchondral bone to condylar bone were ascertained using µ-XRF-XANES and µ-XRF-XRD. The coupled µ-XRF-XANES in situ complemented with µ-XRF-XRD in situ and immunohistochemistry provided valuable biological insights into zone-specific biological pathways in rat TMJ condyles. Based on these data, we present a workflow to reliably map and correlate S species within Zn-enriched regions of cartilage, bone, and their interface. We suggest the use of this correlative and complementary microspectroscopic spatial information for zone-specific localization of biometal Zn and nonmetal S to gain insights into plausible microanatomy-specific oxidative stress in the TMJ.

Improved Joint FHC+RHC Sterile Analysis with Nu-on-E Sample

The NOvA experiment measures neutrino oscillations in a nearly pure muon neutrino beam. The neutral current (NC) and the muon neutrino charged current (CC) interaction disappearance are studied to search for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations. NOvA consists of two functionally identical detectors placed 14 mrad off-axis of Fermilab's NuMI beamline. The Near Detector (ND) is located 100 m underground on-site at Fermilab, while the Far Detector (FD) sits on the surface 810 km away at Ash River, Minnesota. The NuMI beam is capable of running in forward or reverse horn current modes, creating a predominantly neutrino or antineutrino beam, respectively. For this analysis, a simultaneous near and far detector joint fit approach was utilized. Systematic uncertainties constrain the ND while the statistical uncertainties constrain the FD. For the upcoming analysis, we plan on including a dedicated neutrino-on-electron elastic scattering sample. This interaction is advantageous as it is subject to minimal cross-section uncertainties, which will help reduce degeneracies between other uncertainty categories. This thesis presents the sterile neutrino oscillation sensitivity results using 27.2e+20 POT in FHC mode, 12.6e+20 in RHC mode.

The Forward Master Equation for the Joint Neutron-Photon Number Probability Distribution

The model is similar to the Binary Fission Model (BFM) in chapter three of the Stochastic Neutronics Primer Volume I, however, we add photons as a product of induced fission events (IFEs). We will find that tracking the population of an additional particle adds an additional layer of complexity because we are now looking for a joint probability distribution.

A Joint Search for Muon Neutrino Disappearance with the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program Using the SPINE Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction Package

We present the status of a joint search for muon neutrino disappearance in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab using the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program's two-detector configuration, SBND and ICARUS. Charged-current interactions consistent with muon neutrinos and containing only a muon and at least one proton in the final state are reconstructed and selected using the SPINE deep learning-based particle reconstruction package. To exploit proton multiplicity information and enhance sensitivity to modeling effects, the selected sample is partitioned into exclusive channels with exactly one reconstructed proton and with more than one reconstructed proton. Comprehensive systematic uncertainties from the neutrino flux, interaction, and detector response are incorporated into the analysis, and the coverage of these systematic uncertainty models is validated using data from both detectors, including checks of near-far consistency in key kinematic and topology-sensitive observables. This analysis is intended for inclusion in SBN's first oscillation result.

Joint Modeling of Quasar Variability and Accretion Disk Reprocessing Using Latent Stochastic Differential Equations

Quasars are bright active galactic nuclei powered by the accretion of matter around supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies. Their stochastic brightness variability depends on the physical properties of the accretion disk and black hole. The upcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is expected to observe tens of millions of quasars, so there is a need for efficient techniques like machine learning that can handle the large volume of data. Quasar variability is believed to be driven by an X-ray corona, which is reprocessed by the accretion disk and emitted as UV/optical variability. We are the first to introduce an auto-differentiable simulation of the accretion disk and reprocessing. We use the simulation as a direct component of our neural network to jointly model the driving variability and reprocessing, trained with supervised learning on simulated LSST-like 10 yr quasar light curves. We encode the light curves using a transformer encoder, and the driving variability is reconstructed using latent stochastic differential equations, a physically motivated generative deep learning method that can model continuous-time stochastic dynamics. By embedding the physical processes of the driving signal and reprocessing into our network, we achieve a model that is more robust and interpretable. We demonstrate that our model outperforms a Gaussian process regression baseline and can infer accretion disk parameters and time delays between wave bands, even for out-of-distribution driving signals. Our approach provides a powerful framework that can be adapted to solve other inverse problems in multivariate time series.

Joint Analysis of Small-scale Galaxy Clustering and Galaxy–Galaxy Lensing from BOSS Galaxies

We present a joint analysis of galaxy clustering and galaxy–galaxy lensing measurements from BOSS galaxies using a simulation-based emulation method combined with a halo occupation distribution model. Our emulators are constructed with the Aemulus ν simulations, a suite of wνCDM N-body simulations with massive neutrinos as independent particle species. We combine small-scale analysis of clustering from 0.1 to 60.2 h −1 Mpc and lensing from 1.7 to 60.2 h −1 Mpc to perform cosmological constraints. We split the BOSS galaxies into three redshift bins to measure their clustering and employ galaxies from Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey and Hyper Suprime-Cam as source galaxies to measure lensing separately. We find that the addition of lensing significantly improves the constraining power on $S_8 = σ_8(Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5}$, with a weak improvement for fσ 8 . Our results of fσ 8 indicate tensions of around 1σ−4σ below the results of the cosmic microwave background observations of Planck. For S 8 , our results are also lower than Planck, and the tension can be mitigated when considering possible systematics in lensing measurement. As a by-product, our analysis prefers a nonzero neutrino mass but without strong significance, with the constraining power dominated by the clustering. Given the accuracy and precision of our model and the observational data, it is anticipated that larger and higher-quality spectroscopic data sets will improve the constraints on this fundamental property in the near future.

Constraints on Nonthermal Pressure at Galaxy Cluster Outskirts from a Joint SPT and XMM-Newton Analysis

We present joint South Pole Telescope and XMM-Newton observations of eight massive galaxy clusters (0.8–2 × 10$^{15}$ M$_{⊙}$) spanning a redshift range of 0.16–0.35. Employing a novel Sunyaev–Zel’dovich + X-ray fitting technique, we effectively constrain the thermodynamic properties of these clusters out to the virial radius. The resulting best-fit electron density, deprojected temperature, and deprojected pressure profiles are in good agreement with previous observations of massive clusters. For the majority of the cluster sample (five out of eight clusters), the entropy profiles exhibit a self-similar behavior near the virial radius. We further derive hydrostatic mass, gas mass, and gas fraction profiles for all clusters up to the virial radius. Comparing the enclosed gas fraction profiles with the universal gas fraction profile, we obtain nonthermal pressure fraction profiles for our cluster sample at >0.5R$_{500}$, demonstrating a steeper increase between R$_{500}$ and R$_{200}$ that is consistent with the hydrodynamical simulations. Our analysis yields nonthermal pressure fraction ranges of 8%–28% (median: 15% ± 11%) at R$_{500}$ and 21%–35% (median: 27% ± 12%) at R$_{200}$. Notably, weak-lensing mass measurements are available for only four clusters in our sample, and our recovered total cluster masses, after accounting for nonthermal pressure, are consistent with these measurements.

Aerosol-deep convection interaction based on joint cell-thermal tracking in Large Eddy Simulations during the TRACER campaign

In cumulus clouds, aerosol concentrations control cloud droplet concentrations, modifying cloud radiative properties, precipitation processes, and cloud electrification. However, mechanisms of aerosol-deep convection interactions are not well understood due to complex cloud dynamics and microphysics. We investigate the interaction of aerosols with isolated deep convection using Large Eddy Simulations of two cases during the TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (TRACER) near Houston, Texas, using a joint cell-thermal tracking algorithm. Cumulus thermals are droplet generators, since supersaturation and droplet nucleation coincide with thermal centers, where the strongest updrafts occur. Primary ice crystal formation does not take place inside thermals, but at layers where previous thermals detrained moisture. As subsequent thermals containing supercooled droplets penetrate these layers, hail and graupel form at or near these thermals. Higher aerosol concentrations result in higher droplet concentrations that suppress drizzle, delay warm rain processes, and transport more moisture aloft. This increases snow and ice amount, as well as graupel and hail, leading to more lightning. Polluted thermals initiate at slightly higher altitudes, and are slightly larger and faster, suggesting a weak invigoration. We also find more thermals per cell, but fewer isolated cells, since convection is more aggregated and intense, especially near the end of the 24 h simulation. Non-linear mesoscale feedback likely triggered by temperature and moisture responses to aerosol-thermal interactions causes the aggregation. Time-lagged aerosol-reinitialization experiments show that the mesoscale response is the predominant forcing for the invigoration. These changes happen within one day, on a smaller scale than previously suggested.

Joint cosmological fits to DESI-DR1 full-shape clustering and weak gravitational lensing in configuration space

We present a joint $3\times2$-pt cosmological analysis of auto- and cross-correlations between the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Data Release 1 (DESI-DR1) Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) and Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) samples and overlapping shear measurements from the KiDS-1000, DES-Y3 and HSC-Y3 weak lensing surveys. We perform our analysis in configuration space and, in addition to the cosmic shear correlation functions for each weak lensing dataset, we fit the tangential shear of the weak lensing source galaxies around DESI lens galaxies. Finally, we make use of the anisotropic BGS and LRG clustering information by fitting the full shape of the two-point correlation function multipoles measured over the full DESI-DR1 footprint, presenting the first full-shape analysis of DESI measurements in configuration space. We find that the addition of weak lensing information serves to improve, with respect to the clustering-only case, the measurements of the power spectrum amplitude parameters $\ln(10^{10}A_{\rm{s}})$ and $σ_{12}$ by $15\%$ and $36\%$, respectively. It also improves measurements of the linear bias of the lens galaxies by $15-20\%$, depending on the tracer. Our results show excellent consistency, regardless of the weak lensing survey considered, and are furthermore consistent with a companion analysis that fits $3\times2$-pt correlations including DESI projected clustering measurements, as well as the results published by the weak lensing collaborations themselves. Our measured values for weak lensing amplitude are $S_{8}^{\mathrm{DESI\times HSC}}=0.787\pm0.020$, $S_{8}^{\mathrm{DESI\times DES}}=0.791\pm0.016$, $S_{8}^{\mathrm{DESI\times KiDS}}=0.771\pm0.017$, which are $1.9σ-2.9σ$ below the $S_8$ value preferred by Planck. Finally, our clustering-only results are in good agreement with the Fourier space full-shape analysis of all DESI tracers.

Improving Experience Beyond the Ride: Joint Assignment and Repositioning for Rideshare

In this study, a novel joint assignment and repositioning strategy is designed, implemented, and tested in a simulated traffic environment. The strategy addresses limitations of previously constructed rideshare repositioning algorithms by integrating the consideration of rider pooling into the optimization. By considering pooling, the strategy can minimize excess vehicle movement and increase riders' use of pooled services over a zonal-flow-based repositioning strategy and a fleet operating with no repositioning at all. The new strategy can increase pooling by up to 2.3% compared to no repositioning in a large region, and up to 0.1% in a small region, without compromising overall fleet revenue. Additionally, compared to a baseline, flow-based repositioning strategy, the new strategy can reduce empty vehicle travel by up to 30% in the larger region, and 2.1% in the smaller simulated area.
