2020 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe (ISGT-Europe)

Recent proliferation of distributed energy sources in distribution or sub-transmission systems necessitates close monitoring of these three-phase power grids which typically operate under unbalanced loading conditions. Unlike the transmission systems where the network equations are commonly based on the positive sequence component models, a detailed three phase model will have to be used in implementing network applications for these systems. In the specific case of the state estimator, where measurement and parameter errors may bias the solution, bad data and parameter error detection algorithms should also be incorporated. Implementing the state estimator and error detection algorithms for three-phase systems impose additional computational burden and modifications to the state estimation code. This paper proposes a practical solution to avoid these issues by using synchronized phasor measurements and modal decoupling. The previously developed parameter error detection algorithm based on the normalized Lagrange multipliers (NLM) test is applied to the measurements independently in each mode in parallel, not only saving CPU time but also avoiding new code development for a three-phase estimator. Different parameter error scenarios are created and tested to verify the effectiveness of the proposed error detection approach.

IEEE 1547-2018 Based Interoperable PV Inverter with Advanced Grid-Support Functions

Grid integration of photovoltaic (PV) inverters has been increasing in the past decade. As a result of the uncertainties introduced with high penetrations of PV, better monitoring and control of the PV inverters becomes crucial for improving overall system stability. This paper focuses on the communications capability of the inverter controller and on enabling interoperability. Multiple standards are available to enable interoperability in PV inverters. In this paper, an interoperable controller, enabled by Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3) communications protocols, is developed for a grid-connected, three-phase PV inverter. The DNP3 server for the PV inverter is programmed on the real-time layer of the field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based inverter controller. Set points for advanced inverter control functions, such as volt/VAr curves, ride-through curves, are sent from a DNP3 client, a simulated distribution management system application, to the PV inverter through DNP3. This communications capability of the inverter controller is validated using a controller-hardware-in-the-loop experimental setup. The code developed to achieve the interoperability is available in the public domain through open-source software licensing. This interoperability will enable smoother grid integration of smart PV inverters with advanced grid-support functions as well as allow better monitoring and control of PV inverters for grid stability.

1988 IEEE Annual Conference on Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects, 25th, Portland, OR, July 12-15, 1988, Proceedings

The effects of nuclear and space radiation on the performance of electronic devices are discussed in reviews and reports of recent investigations. Topics addressed include the basic mechanisms of radiation effects, dosimetry and energy-dependent effects, sensors in and for radiation environments, EMP/SGEMP/IEMP phenomena, radiation effects on isolation technologies, and spacecraft charging and space radiation effects. Consideration is given to device radiation effects and hardening, hardness assurance and testing techniques, IC radiation effects and hardening, and single-event phenomena.
