Bayesian inference analysis of jet quenching using inclusive jet and hadron suppression measurements

The JETSCAPE Collaboration reports a new determination of the jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) using Bayesian inference, incorporating all available inclusive hadron and jet yield suppression data measured in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This multi-observable analysis extends the previously published JETSCAPE Bayesian inference determination of $\hat{q}$, which was based solely on a selection of inclusive hadron suppression data. jetscape is a modular framework incorporating detailed dynamical models of QGP formation and evolution, and jet propagation and interaction in the QGP. Virtuality-dependent partonic energy loss in the QGP is modeled as a thermalized weakly coupled plasma, with parameters determined from Bayesian calibration using soft-sector observables. This Bayesian calibration of $\hat{q}$ utilizes active learning, a machine-learning approach, for efficient exploitation of computing resources. The experimental data included in this analysis span a broad range in collision energy and centrality, and in transverse momentum. In order to explore the systematic dependence of the extracted parameter posterior distributions, several different calibrations are reported, based on combined jet and hadron data; on jet or hadron data separately; and on restricted kinematic or centrality ranges of the jet and hadron data. Tension is observed in comparison of these variations, providing new insights into the physics of jet transport in the QGP and its theoretical formulation.

Jet radius dependence of dijet momentum balance and suppression in Pb + Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes a measurement of the jet radius dependence of the dijet momentum balance between leading back-to-back jets in 1.72 nb -1 of Pb + Pb collisions collected in 2018 and 255 pb -1 of pp collisions collected in 2017 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Both datasets were collected at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-k t algorithm with jet radius parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. The dijet momentum balance distributions are constructed for leading jets with transverse momentum p T from 100 to 562 GeV for R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 jets, and from 158 to 562 GeV for R = 0.5 and 0.6 jets. The absolutely normalized dijet momentum balance distributions are constructed to compare measurements of the dijet yields in Pb + Pb collisions directly to the dijet cross sections in pp collisions. For all jet radii considered here, there is a suppression of more balanced dijets in Pb + Pb collisions compared with pp collisions, while for more imbalanced dijets there is an enhancement. There is a jet radius dependence to the dijet yields, being stronger for more imbalanced dijets than for more balanced dijets. Additionally, jet pair nuclear modification factors are measured. The subleading jet yields are found to be more suppressed than leading jet yields in dijets. A jet radius dependence of the pair nuclear modification factors is observed, with the suppression decreasing with increasing jet radius. These measurements provide new constraints on jet quenching scenarios in the quark-gluon plasma.

Two-particle angular correlations in e + e - collisions to hadronic final states in two reference coordinates at Belle

We present the analysis of two-particle angular correlations using coordinate systems defined with the conventional beam axis and the event thrust axis. We propose the latter as a good representation for the correlation structure interpretation in the e + e - collision system. The e + e - collisions to hadronic final states at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52 GeV and 10.58 GeV are recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. In this paper, results on the first dataset are supplementary to the previous Belle publication [1]. At the same time, the latter is the first two-particle correlation measurement at collision energy on the Υ(4S) resonance and is sensitive to its decay products. Measurements are reported as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. Finally, a qualitative understanding of the correlation structure is discussed using a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data.

Observation of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence of 𝜎 𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆 )/𝜎 𝐽/𝜓 in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at 8.16 TeV

Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited (𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆)) and ground state (𝐽/𝜓) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead (𝑝⁢Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5 < 𝑝 T < 30 GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning −2.865 < 𝑦 CM < 1.935. For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.

FLAG Review 2019: Flavour Lattice Averaging Group (FLAG)

Abstract We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D -meson, B -meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $$f_+(0)$$ f + ( 0 ) arising in the semileptonic $$K \rightarrow \pi $$ K → π transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $$f_K/f_\pi $$ f K / f π and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $$V_{us}$$ V us and $$V_{ud}$$ V ud . Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $$SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$$ S U ( 2 ) L × S U ( 2 ) R and $$SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$$ S U ( 3 ) L × S U ( 3 ) R Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $$B_K$$ B K parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four B parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $$m_c$$ m c and $$m_b$$ m b as well as those for D - and B -meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $$\alpha _s$$ α s . Finally, in this review we have added a new section reviewing results for nucleon matrix elements of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal.

Charm- and bottom-quark production in Au+Au collisions at $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$=200 GeV

Here, the invariant yield of electrons from open-heavy-flavor decays for 1 < p T < 8 GeV/c at midrapidity |y| < 0.35 in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A displaced-vertex analysis with the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector enables extraction of the fraction of charm and bottom hadron decays and unfolding of the invariant yield of parent charm and bottom hadrons. The nuclear-modification factors RAA for electrons from charm and bottom hadron decays and heavy-flavor hadrons show both a centrality and a quark-mass dependence, indicating suppression in the quark-gluon plasma produced in these collisions that is medium sized and quark-mass dependent.

Azimuthal anisotropies of charged particles with high transverse momentum in Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement is presented of elliptic (𝑣 2 ) and triangular (𝑣 3 ) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients for charged particles produced in Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.44nb −1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2018. The values of 𝑣 2 and 𝑣 3 are measured for charged particles over a wide range of transverse momentum (𝑝 T ), 1–400 GeV, and Pb + Pb collision centrality, 0–60%, using the scalar-product and multiparticle cumulant methods. These methods are sensitive to event-by-event fluctuations and nonflow effects in the measurements of azimuthal anisotropies. Positive values of 𝑣 2 are observed up to a 𝑝 T of approximately 100 GeV from both methods across all centrality intervals. Positive values of 𝑣 3 are observed up to approximately 25 GeV using both methods, though the application of the three-subevent technique to the multiparticle cumulant method leads to significant changes at the highest 𝑝 T . At high 𝑝 T (𝑝 T ⪆ 10 GeV), charged particles are dominantly from jet fragmentation. These jets, and hence the measurements presented here, are sensitive to the path-length dependence of parton energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma produced in Pb + Pb collisions.

Temperature dependence of heavy quark diffusion from (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD

We present a lattice determination of the heavy-quark diffusion coefficient in (2+1)-flavor QCD with almost physical quark masses. The momentum and spatial diffusion coefficients are extracted for a wide temperature range, from T = 163 MeV to 10 GeV. The results are in agreement with previous works from the HotQCD collaboration, and show fast thermalization of the heavy quark inside the QGP. Near the chiral crossover temperature T c ≃ 150 MeV, our results are close to the AdS/CFT estimation computed at strong coupling.

Evidence of Spin-Interference Effects in Exclusive 𝐽/𝜓 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral Heavy-Ion Collisions

Here, we report the first evidence of spin interference in exclusive 𝐽/𝜓 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − photoproduction in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at STAR at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. In Au + Au collisions, a negative cos⁡(2⁢𝜙) modulation is found for 𝑝 𝑇 < 120 MeV/𝑐 with a significance of 3.2⁢𝜎, while the isobar data (Ru + Ru, Zr + Zr) show a consistent negative modulation with a significance of 1.9⁢𝜎, opposite in sign to that in 𝜌 0 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − photoproduction. This establishes for the first time that the interference sign is controlled by the spin structure of the final-state daughters, resolving the ambiguity present in the all-boson 𝜌 0 channel. The compact 𝐽/𝜓 probes gluon distributions at perturbative scales, resulting in a weaker modulation and providing stringent constraints on color glass condensate calculations. These findings demonstrate that spin-dependent interference in heavy vector mesons provides a new, experimentally accessible handle on gluon structure beyond traditional cross-section measurements.

Algebraic model to study the internal structure of pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content

The internal structure of all lowest-lying pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content is studied in detail using an algebraic model that has been applied recently, and successfully, to the same physical observables of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with hidden-flavor quark content, from light to heavy quark sectors. The algebraic model consists on constructing simple and evidence-based of the meson’s Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (BSA) and quark’s propagator in such a way that the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (BSWF) can then be readily computed algebraically. Its subsequent projection onto the light front yields the light front wave function (LFWF) whose form allows us a simple access to the valence-quark parton distribution amplitude (PDA) by integrating over the transverse momentum squared. We exploit our current knowledge of the PDAs of lowest-lying pseudoscalar heavy-light mesons to compute their generalized parton distributions (GPDs) through the overlap representation of LFWFs. From these three dimensional knowledge, different limits/projections lead us to deduce the related parton distribution functions (PDFs), electromagnetic form factors (EFFs), and impact parameter space GPDs (IPS-GPDs). When possible, we make explicit comparisons with available experimental results and earlier theoretical predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The Problem of overlapping formation times: In-medium virtual corrections for QCD

High energy particles traversing through medium primarily lose energy by showering through hard bremsstrahlung and pair production. These splitting processes are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, leading to suppression from the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. Avoiding soft-emission approximations, we study the cases where the coherence lengths of two consecutive splittings overlap (which is important for calculating corrections to LPM effect in QCD). Here, we will show how to compute in-medium virtual corrections to the leading order LPM emission rates for QCD. These loop corrections will be necessary for calculating properties of in-medium high energy parton showers. To simplify the calculations, we will focus on the all-gluon case and work in the large-Nc limit of QCD, where Nc is the number of colors.

O 16 O 16 collisions at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at the CERN Large Hadron Collider comparing α clustering versus substructure

Collisions of . light and heavy nuclei in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have been shown to be sensitive to nuclear structure. With a proposed 16 O 16 O run at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) we study the potential for finding α clustering in 16 O. Here we use the state-of-the-art iEBE-VISHNU package with 16 O nucleonic configurations from ab initio nuclear lattice simulations. This setup was tuned using a Bayesian analysis on p Pb and PbPb systems. We find that the 16 O 16 O system always begins far from equilibrium and that at LHC and RHIC it approaches the regime of hydrodynamic applicability only at very late times. Finally, by taking ratios of flow harmonics we are able to find measurable differences between α-clustering, nucleonic, and subnucleonic degrees of freedom in the initial state.

PANDA as midrapidity detector for a future HESR Collider at FAIR

Exciting new scientific opportunities are presented for the PANDA detector at the High Energy Storage Ring in the redefined $$\overline{\text {p}} \text {p}(A)$$ p ¯ p ( A ) collider mode, HESR-C, at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Europe. The high luminosity, $$L \sim 10^{31}$$ L ~ 10 31 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 , and a wide range of intermediate and high energies, $$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}}$$ s NN up to 30 GeV for $$\overline{\text {p}} \text {p}(A)$$ p ¯ p ( A ) collisions will allow to explore a wide range of exciting topics in QCD, including the study of the production of excited open charm and bottom states, nuclear bound states containing heavy (anti)quarks, the interplay of hard and soft physics in the dilepton production, probing short-range correlations in nuclei, and the exploration of the early, complete $$\overline{\text {p}}$$ p ¯ -p- annihilation phase, where an initially pure Yang–Mills gluon plasma is formed.
