General-Purpose Heat Source Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator Flight Unit 5 Refurbished (GPHS-RTG F5R) Power Prediction

INL has evaluated and refurbished General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) Flight Unit 5 (GPHS-RTG F5R or F5R) that was defueled in 2005. The generator has passed all the INL internal reviews, an end item data package has been delivered to NASA and is ready fueling for a mission. NASA requested a user’s guide for F5R with enough detail for a prospective mission proposal. This report documents the development of the power prediction model used in the user’s guide. The prediction evaluated the thermoelectric “burn-in” and the graceful degradation modes of the missions and developed a thermal inventory dependent equation that predicts the power that matches Galileo, Cassini, and PNH within a three-standard deviation of ±1%. This prediction is only valid for the 30 VDC load voltage of these missions.

A fixed grid numerical methodology for phase change problems involving a moving heat source

A numerical method for solving phase change problems involving a moving heat source is presented and illustrated by a two-dimensional example. The method uses a fixed grid and does not require the implementation of the Stefan condition at the solid-liquid interface; the procedure can thus be easily implemented using existing fixed grid codes. The problem considered as an example involves natural convection flow in the molten metal during tungsten inert gas welding.

Theoretical analysis of a refrigerant injection-enhanced air source heat pump with thermal energy storage for extended cold-climate and defrosting operations

This study investigates a conceptual refrigerant injection-enhanced air source heat pump with integrated thermal energy storage (ITES-ASHP) that combines two-phase flash tank injection with phase change material (PCM) thermal energy storage (TES) to extend cold-climate operation and maintain indoor heating during defrost. A steady-state, mode-based thermodynamic cycle model is developed to evaluate heating and defrosting modes with and without refrigerant injection and TES integration over an outdoor temperature range of 8 to −25 °C. The framework is applied to refrigerants R-290, R-454B, R-410 A, and R-32. A parametric study is conducted for an 18-kW system rated for an outdoor temperature of 8 °C, with the compressor frequency scheduled to 150 Hz. The optimal PCM phase-change temperature is identified as 20 °C for R-290, R-454B, and R-410 A, and 15 °C for R-32. At the design condition of −25 °C outdoor temperature, the proposed concept achieves a combined COP of 2.22 for R-290, corresponding to a 60% increase relative to the theoretical single-stage baseline for combined heating and defrosting operation. Safety screening based on compressor discharge temperature (≤ 120 °C) and injection quality (≥ 0.65), together with performance evaluation, indicates that R-290 is the most suitable candidate, followed by R-410 A and R-454B. Under the assumptions and constraints used here, R-32 is found to be less suitable due to excessive discharge temperatures and a higher risk of wet compression.

Atmosphere-entry behavior of a modular, disk-shaped, isotope heat source.

The authors have studied the entry and impact behavior of an isotope heat source for space nuclear power that disassembles into a number of modules which would enter the earth's atmosphere separately if a flight aborted. These modules are disk-shaped units, each with its own reentry heat shield and protective impact container. In normal operation, the disk modules are stacked inside the generator, but during a reentry abort they separate and fly as individual units of low ballistic coefficient. Flight tests at hypersonic speeds have confirmed that a stack of disks will separate and assume a flat-forward mode of flight. Free-fall tests of single disks have demonstrated a nominal impact velocity of 30 m/sec at sea level for a practical range of ballistic coefficients.

Evaluating Air-Source Heat Pumps with Distributed Energy Resources in REopt

This training introduces attendees to NREL's REopt(R) web tool and its capabilities in evaluating air-source heat pumps (ASHP) alongside distributed energy resources (DERs). Designed for energy managers, facility operators, and sustainability managers, this session will explore how REopt provides techno-economic analysis to assess the financial viability of ASHP while identifying synergies with solar PV and battery storage. Participants will gain practical insights into using REopt to optimize energy strategies, reduce costs, and improve site resilience.

Role of Internal Heat Source for Eruptive Plumes on Triton

For the first time the role of the internal heat source, due to radioactive decay in Triton's core, is investigate with respect to geyser-like plumes...A new mechanism of energy supply to the Tritonian eruptive plumes is proposed...We present the critical values of these parameters for Triton. A possible origin of the subsurface vents on Triton is also suggested.

Conceptual Trade Study of General Purpose Heat Source Powered Stirling Converter Configurations

This Technical Manual describes a parametric study of general purpose heat source (GPHS) powered Stirling converter configurations. This study was performed in support of MSFC s efforts to establish the capability to perform non-nuclear system level testing and integration of radioisotope power systems. Six different GPHS stack configurations at a total of three different power levels (80, 250, and 500 W(sub e) were analyzed. The thermal profiles of the integrated GPHS modules (for each configuration) were calculated to determine maximum temperatures for comparison to allowable material limits. Temperature profiles for off-nominal power conditions were also assessed in order to better understand how power demands from the Stirling engine impact the performance of a given configuration.

Open-source simulation platform for air source heat pump integrated with thermal energy storage

Here, this article introduces a modular simulation platform for assessing thermal energy storage (TES) integrated with air source heat pumps (ASHP). The Python platform is an open-source library that includes classes for modeling air-air and air-water heat pumps, TES devices, and the heating load of residential buildings. To validate the ASHP model, the study utilized experimental data obtained from a commercial heat pump evaluated at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The results indicate a mean deviation of 0.7% for COP across the operating range, with a maximum relative deviation of 12.6%. In terms of system heating capacity, the model had an average deviation of 4.3% compared to experimental results, with a maximum deviation of 8.2%. Three classes were implemented for modeling distinct types of TES devices: a generic TES based on energy balances, a sensible isothermal water tank, and a stratified water tank. Details of the mathematical models are provided, along with their respective strengths and limitations. An example is provided showcasing the integration of a residential 10 kWh thermal storage unit with an ASHP operating in Denver, CO. The comparison of two different discharge criteria for the TES unit highlights the importance of control strategies in the system performance.

Aluminum-26 as a planetoid heat source in the early solar system

The results of thermal model calculations which assume Al-26 as a heat source are presented. The relation between Al-26 content, the maximum central temperature obtained, and the time interval after formation until central cooling commences is elucidated. Because of the heating times required, these results constrain maximum permissible planetoid dimensions more severely than do previous calculations which assume a high initial temperature.

A study of high-temperature heat pipes with multiple heat sources and sinks. I - Experimental methodology and frozen startup profiles. II - Analysis of continuum transient and steady-state experimental data with numerical predictions

Experimental profiles for heat pipe startup from the frozen state were obtained, using a high-temperature sodium/stainless steel pipe with multiple heat sources and sinks to investigate the startup behavior of the heat pipe for various heat loads and input locations, with both low and high heat rejection rates at the condensor. The experimental results of the performance characteristics for the continuum transient and steady-state operation of the heat pipe were analyzed, and the performance limits for operation with varying heat fluxes and location are determined.
