Generalized symmetry constraints on deformed 4D SCFTs

We explore the consequence of generalized symmetries in four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories. First, we classify all possible supersymmetric gauge theories with a simple gauge group that have a nontrivial one-form symmetry and flows to a superconformal field theory. Upon identifying unbroken discrete zero-form symmetries from the Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly, we find that many of these theories have mixed zero-form or one-form ’t Hooft anomalies. Then we classify the relevant deformations of these SCFTs that preserve the anomaly. From this mixed anomaly together with the anomalies of the discrete zero-form symmetries, we find obstructions for the relevant deformations of these SCFTs to flow to a trivially gapped phase. We also study non-Lagrangian SCFTs formed by gauging copies of Argyres-Douglas theories and constrain their deformations. In particular, we explore a new duality between the diagonal gauging of two D 3 ( S U ( N ) ) theories and S U ( N ) gauge theory with two adjoints. We also repeat our analysis for a host of nonsupersymmetric gauge theories having nontrivial one-form symmetry including examples that appear to flow to Bank-Zaks type CFTs. Gravity duals for defect quivers in the Veneziano limit

We construct gravity duals to supersymmetric gauge theories in the presence of unquenched flavor hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group living on the (1+1)-dimensional defect. This configuration is given by the intersection of two sets of D3-branes. Working in the Veneziano limit with large number of colors and flavors we are able to find a closed set of equations describing the dual geometry. We briefly discuss the corresponding solutions for massless flavors as well as in the small flavor limit of massive hypermultiplets. Interestingly, the $\frac{1}{16}$-BPS supergravity solutions, preserving two Poincaré supercharges, are generically only asymptotically anti de-Sitter and the dilaton does not vary with the holographic radial coordinate. This implies that the classical Type IIB supergravity solutions remain trustworthy descriptions for the gauge theories from the deep IR to the far UV.

Subleading corrections to the S 3 free energy of necklace quiver theories dual to massive IIA

We investigate the S 3 free energy of N = 3 Chern-Simons-matter quiver gauge theories with gauge group U(N) r (r ≥ 2) where the sum of Chern-Simons levels does not vanish, beyond the leading order in the large-N limit. We take two different approaches to explore the sub-leading structures of the free energy. First we evaluate the matrix integral for the partition function in the ’t Hooft limit using a saddle point approximation. Second we use an ideal Fermi-gas model to compute the same partition function, but in the limit of fixed Chern-Simons levels. The resulting expressions for the free energy F = – log Z are then compared in the overlapping parameter regime. The Fermi-gas approach also hints at a universal 1/6 log N correction to the free energy. Since the quiver gauge theories we consider are dual to massive Type IIA theory, we expect the sub-leading correction of the planar free energy in the large ’t Hooft parameter limit to match higher-derivative corrections to the tree-level holographic dual free energy, which have not yet been fully investigated.

Subleading corrections to the free energy in a theory with N 5/3 scaling

We numerically investigate the sphere partition function of a Chern-Simons-matter theory with SU(N) gauge group at level k coupled to three adjoint chiral multiplets that is dual to massive IIA theory. Beyond the leading order N 5/3 behavior of the free energy, we find numerical evidence for a term of the form (2/9) log N. We conjecture that this term may be universal in theories with N 5/3 scaling in the large-N limit with the Chern-Simons level k held fixed.

Loop-level double-copy for massive fermions in the fundamental

We find that unitarity cuts and the duality between color and kinematics are sufficient constraints to bootstrap D-dimensional QCD scattering amplitudes starting from three-particle tree-level. Specifically, we calculate tree level amplitudes through six-points, as well as the four-point one-loop correction for massive fermions in the fundamental representation of the gauge group — constructing a color-dual representation of the latter for the first time. To do so we clarify a prescription for functional kinematic ansatze involving fermionic matter. The advantages of color-dual calculation, familiar from particles in the adjoint, also apply here: only a small number of basis topologies must be constrained via physical information of the theory, and algebraic relations propagate this to a full solution. As all the QCD amplitudes we construct here are color-dual, they trivially generate D-dimensional amplitudes in gravitational theories via double-copy construction.

Global dipole symmetry, compact Lifshitz theory, tensor gauge theory, and fractons

We study field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge dipole symmetries. The famous Lifshitz theory is an example of a theory with a global dipole symmetry. We study in detail its 1+1d version with a compact field. When this global symmetry is promoted to a $U(1)$ dipole gauge symmetry, the corresponding gauge field is a tensor gauge field. This theory is known to lead to fractons. In order to resolve various subtleties in the precise meaning of these global or gauge symmetries, we place these 1+1d theories on a lattice and then take the continuum limit. Interestingly, the continuum limit is not unique. Different limits lead to different continuum theories, whose operators, defects, global symmetries, etc. are different. We also consider a lattice gauge theory with a $\mathbb Z_N$ dipole gauge group. Surprisingly, several physical observables, such as the ground state degeneracy and the mobility of defects depend sensitively on the number of sites in the lattice. Our analysis forces us to think carefully about global symmetries that do not act on the standard Hilbert space of the theory, but only on the Hilbert space in the presence of defects. We refer to them as time-like global symmetries and discuss them in detail. Furthermore, these time-like global symmetries allow us to phrase the mobility restrictions of defects (including those of fractons) as a consequence of a global symmetry.

The Bethe-Ansatz approach to the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 superconformal index at finite rank

We investigate the Bethe-Ansatz approach to the superconformal index of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills with SU( N ) gauge group in the context of finite rank, N . We explicitly explore the role of the various types of solutions to the Bethe-Ansatz Equations in recovering the exact index for N = 2 , 3. We classify the Bethe-Ansatz Equations solutions as standard (corresponding to a freely acting orbifold T 2 /Z m × Z n ) and non-standard. For N = 2, we find that the index is fully recovered by standard solutions and displays an interesting pattern of cancellations. However, for N ≥ 3, the standard solutions alone do not suffice to reconstruct the index. We present quantitative arguments in various regimes of fugacities that highlight the challenging role played by the continuous families of non-standard solutions.

Giant Graviton Expansion from Bubbling Geometry: Discreteness from Quantized Geometry

The superconformal index of half-BPS states in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills with gauge group U⁡(N) admits an expansion in terms of giant gravitons, J N (q) = J ∞ ⁡(q)⁢Σ$^{∞}_{m=0}$ q m⁢N ⁢ J^ m ⁡(q), where m is the number of giant gravitons and J ∞ ⁡(q) is the graviton index. The expansion can be viewed as the implementation of trace relations for finite N. We derive this expansion directly in supergravity from the class of half-BPS solutions due to Lin, Lunin, and Maldacena in type IIB supergravity. The moduli space of these configurations can be quantized using covariant quantization methods. We show how this quantization leads to the precise expression for the expansion in terms of giant gravitons. Our proposal provides a derivation of the giant graviton expansion directly in terms of quantized supergravity degrees of freedom, and it recovers discrete data via quantum geometries that are classically nonsmooth.

Exploring the strong-coupling region of SU( N ) Seiberg-Witten theory

We consider the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure N = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions, with gauge group SU(N). A simple exact series expansion for the dependence of the 2(N – 1) Seiberg-Witten periods a I (u), a DI (u) on the N – 1 Coulomb-branch moduli un is obtained around the Z 2N -symmetric point of the Coulomb branch, where all u n vanish. This generalizes earlier results for N = 2 in terms of hypergeometric functions, and for N = 3 in terms of Appell functions. Using these and other analytical results, combined with numerical computations, we explore the global structure of the Kähler potential K = 1/2Σ I Im(a¯ I a DI ), which is single valued on the Coulomb branch. Evidence is presented that K is a convex function, with a unique minimum at the Z 2N -symmetric point. Finally, we explore candidate walls of marginal stability in the vicinity of this point, and their relation to the surface of vanishing Kähler potential.

Cardy expansion of 3d superconformal indices and corrections to the dual black hole entropy

We consider the superconformal index of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric field theories computed via localization on S 1 × S 2 . We systematically develop an expansion where the ratio of the radius of S 1 to the radius of S 2 is taken very small — a Cardy-like expansion. We emphasize the sub-leading structures in this Cardy-like expansion as well as their interplay with the large-N limit for theories with gauge group of the form product of U(N) factors. We demonstrate that taking the large-N limit first leads to an expression for the effective action yielding the index that only includes terms proportional to 1/β and powers of β i=0,1,2 where β is the ratio of radii. As we depart from the β → 0 limit for finite N, we find indications of non-perturbative contributions of the form e –1/β . We present an explicit evaluation of the superconformal index for the ABJM theory in the large-N limit that is exact in β up to non-perturbative corrections. For the ABJM theory we explore the implications of the Cardy-like expansion for corrections to the entropy of the rotating, electricallly charged, asymptotically AdS 4 dual black hole. Interestingly, we find a closed form for the entropy that includes all perturbative corrections in β and takes the form of the leading order expression but with shifted charges.

A testable hidden-sector model for Dark Matter and neutrino masses

We consider a minimal extension of the Standard Model with a hidden sector charged under a dark local U(1)' gauge group, accounting simultaneously for light neutrino masses and the observed Dark Matter relic abundance. The model contains two copies of right-handed neutrinos which give rise to light neutrino-masses via an extended seesaw mechanism. The presence of a stable Dark-Matter candidate and a massless state naturally arise by requiring the simplest anomaly-free particle content without introducing any extra symmetries. We investigate the phenomenology of the hidden sector considering the U(1)' breaking scale of the order of the electroweak scale. Confronting the thermal history of this hidden-sector model with existing and future constraints from collider, direct and indirect detection experiments provides various possibilities of probing the model in complementary ways as every particle of the dark sector plays a specific cosmological role. Across the identified viable parameter space, a large region predicts a sizable contribution to the effective relativistic degrees-of-freedom in the early Universe that allows to alleviate the recently reported tension between late and early measurements of the Hubble constant.

Sub-leading structures in superconformal indices: subdominant saddles and logarithmic contributions

We systematically study various sub-leading structures in the superconformal index of N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(N) gauge group. We concentrate in the superconformal index description as a matrix model of elliptic gamma functions and in the Bethe-Ansatz presentation. Our saddle-point approximation goes beyond the Cardy-like limit and we uncover various saddles governed by a matrix model corresponding to SU(N) Chern-Simons theory. The dominant saddle, however, leads to perfect agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz approach. We also determine the logarithmic correction to the superconformal index to be log N, finding precise agreement between the saddle-point and Bethe-Ansatz approaches in their respective approximations. We generalize the two approaches to cover a large class of 4d N = 1 superconformal theories. We find that also in this case both approximations agree all the way down to a universal contribution of the form log N. The universality of this last result constitutes a robust signature of this ultraviolet description of asymptotically AdS 5 black holes and could be tested by low-energy IIB supergravity.

Multipartite entanglement structure of fibered link states

We study the patterns of multipartite entanglement in Chern-Simons theory with compact simple gauge group 𝐺 and level 𝑘 for states defined by the path integral on “link complements,” i.e., compact manifolds whose boundaries consist of 𝑛 topologically linked tori. We focus on link complements which can be described topologically as fibrations over a Seifert surface. We show that the entanglement structure of such fibered link complement states is controlled by a topological invariant, the monodromy of the fibration. Thus, the entanglement structure of a Chern-Simons link state is not simply a function of the link, but also of the background manifold in which the link is embedded. In particular, we show that any link possesses an embedding into some background that leads to Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state (GHZ)-like entanglement. Furthermore, we demonstrate that all fibered links with periodic monodromy have GHZ-like entanglement, i.e., a partial trace on any link component produces a separable state. These results generalize to any three dimensional topological field theory with a dual chiral rational conformal field theory.

The superconformal index and black hole instabilities

The superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group U(N) has provided powerful insights into the entropy of supersymmetric black holes in AdS 5 × S 5 , including some sub-leading logarithmic and non-perturbative corrections. Recently, the phase space of supersymmetric solutions has been argued to contain configurations other than the asymptotically AdS 5 black hole. Such configurations include the so-called grey galaxies where the black hole at the center is surrounded by a gas of gravitons. By numerically evaluating the superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills at small values of N, we detect systematic deviations from the entropy of black holes with two distinct angular momenta. We find that the giant graviton expansion of the index is a numerically efficient way of evaluating the index that complements the direct character evaluation and allows for explicit access to N ≤ 15 with up to two giant gravitons in the expansion. We find it remarkable that a supersymmetric quantity in field theory, usually thought of as a rigid counting observable, indeed contains information about different phases in the space of supersymmetric solutions on the gravity side.

Hidden Sectors from Multiple Line Bundles for the B−L$B-L$ MSSM

Abstract We give a formalism for constructing hidden sector bundles as extensions of sums of line bundles in heterotic M‐theory. Although this construction is generic, we present it within the context of the specific Schoen threefold that leads to the physically realistic MSSM model. We discuss the embedding of the line bundles, the existence of the extension bundle, and a number of necessary conditions for the resulting bundle to be slope‐stable and thus supersymmetric. An explicit example is presented, where two line bundles are embedded into the factor of the maximal subgroup of the hidden sector E 8 gauge group, and then enhanced to a non‐Abelian bundle by extension. For this example, there are in fact six inequivalent extension branches, significantly generalizing that space of solutions compared with hidden sectors constructed from a single line bundle.

Generalization of QCD3 symmetry-breaking and flavored quiver dualities

We extend the recently proposed symmetry breaking scenario of QCD 3 to the so-called “master” (2 + 1)d bosonization duality, which has bosonic and fermionic matter on both ends. Using anomaly arguments, a phase diagram emerges with several novel regions. We then construct 2+1 dimensional dualities for flavored quivers using node-by-node dualization. Such dualities are applicable to theories which live on domain walls in QCD 4 -like theories with dynamical quarks. We also derive dualities for quivers based on orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. Lastly, we support the conjectured dualities using holographic constructions, even though several aspects of this holographic construction remain mostly qualitative.

Statistics of base polytopes in F-theory

We propose a new statistical ensemble of toric bases for elliptic Calabi-Yaus used in F-theory models, by focusing on only the convex hull of the base, i.e., the base polytope. This physically motivated coarse-graining greatly simplifies the combinatorial complexity of the part of the 4d F-theory landscape with toric bases. We develop a Monte Carlo approach that randomly samples the base polytopes within fixed boxes, with proper statistical weights. We first apply the algorithm to the set of 2d base polytopes, generating an enlarged set of toric 2d bases that include certain types of codimension-two (4,6) points, and we validate our approach against exact numbers. We then explore the set of 3d base polytopes which fit in a set of “maximal” 3d boxes, and estimate the total number of inequivalent 3d base polytopes to be 10 85 –10 90 . We provide statistical data such as the distribution of non-Higgsable gauge groups on these bases. Amusingly, a similar method can also be applied to generate reflexive polytopes in various dimensions. In both the reflexive and base polytope cases, the number of relevant polytopes obeys a Gaussian distribution as a function of the number of vertices, which can be understood in terms of other results on random polytopes in the math literature.

Baryogenesis from a dark first-order phase transition

We present a very minimal model for baryogenesis by a dark first-order phase transition. It employs a new dark SU(2) D gauge group with two doublet Higgs bosons, two lepton doublets, and two singlets. The singlets act as a neutrino portal that transfer the generated asymmetry to the Standard Model. The model predicts ΔN eff = 0.09–0.13 detectable by future experiments as well as possible signals from exotic decays of the Higgs and Z bosons and stochastic gravitational waves.
