Variational formulation of hybrid problems for fully 3-D transonic flow with shocks in rotor

Based on previous research, the unified variable domain variational theory of hybrid problems for rotor flow is extended to fully 3-D transonic rotor flow with shocks, unifying and generalizing the direct and inverse problems. Three variational principles (VP) families were established. All unknown boundaries and flow discontinuities (such as shocks, free trailing vortex sheets) are successfully handled via functional variations with variable domain, converting almost all boundary and interface conditions, including the Rankine Hugoniot shock relations, into natural ones. This theory provides a series of novel ways for blade design or modification and a rigorous theoretical basis for finite element applications and also constitutes an important part of the optimal design theory of rotor bladings. Numerical solutions to subsonic flow by finite elements with self-adapting nodes given in Refs., show good agreement with experimental results.

A method of producing high quality oxide and related films on surfaces

Aluminum oxide or aluminum nitride films were deposited on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown GaAS(100) using a novel cryogenic-based reactive thin film deposition technique. The process involves the condensation of molecular oxygen, ammonia, or other gases normally used for reactive thin film deposition on the substrate before the metal is deposited. The metal vapor is deposited into this layer and reacts with the molecular solid to form the desired compound or a precursor that can be thermally decomposed to generate the desired compound. The films produced by this method are free of impurities, and the low temperatures can be used to control the film and interfacial structure. The process can be easily integrated with existing MBE systems. Ongoing research using the same apparatus suggests that photon or electron irradiation could be used to promote the reactions needed to produce the intended material.

The lightest supersymmetric particle and the extragalactic gamma-ray background

The possibility that cosmological photino annihilation is caused by the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) is examined with particular attention given to the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The LSP is considered a general type of the best-motivated candidates for cosmic dark matter (CDM). The theoretical analysis employs a corrected assumption for the annihilation cross section, and cosmological integrations are performed through the early phases of the universe. Romberg's method is used for numerical integration, and the total optical depth is developed for the gamma-ray region. The computed LSP-type annihilation fluxes are found to be negligible when compared to the total EGB observed, suggesting that the LSP candidates for CDM are not significant contributors to the EGB.

Absolute differential cross sections for electron capture and loss by kilo-electron-volt hydrogen atoms

This paper reports measurements of absolute differential cross sections for electron capture and loss for fast hydrogen atoms incident on H2, N2, O2, Ar, and He. Cross sections have been determined in the 2.0- to 5.0-keV energy range over the laboratory angular range 0.02-2 deg, with an angular, resolution of 0.02 deg. The high angular resolution allows observation of the structure at small angles in some of the cross sections. Comparison of the present results with those of other authors generally shows very good agreement.

The three-point correlation function for Abell clusters - Observations and simulations

Results are reported of a 3D study tracing the three-point correlation function of Abell clusters and of a comparison of this with the biased cold dark matter (CDM) simulations of Park (1990). For the observations, the maximum likelihood fits are Z11 = 0.85 and Q111 = 0.1, in excellent agreement with the result of the 2D study of Toth et al. (1989). For Park's simulation, maximum likelihood fits of Q11 = 0.9 and Q111 = 0.0 are found, which is in excellent agreement with the observational result. It is concluded that the standard biased CDM gravitational instability model reproduces the observed form of the three-point correlation functions for Abell clusters remarkably well. The number of triples as a function of the sides of triangles for Abell clusters, and the number of triples as a function of the sides of triangles for clusters in Park's simulation are illustrated on graphs.

New bounds on parameter uncertainties for robust stability

The problem of robust stability in linear systems with parametric uncertainties is considered. A method is developed to determine bounds on uncertain parameters in the state-space model of the system, so that stability is preserved. Both continuous- and discrete-time systems are considered. Unlike previous results, the stability bounds are derived in terms of actual parameters instead of their absolute values, and consequently the stable region in the parameter space is not necessarily symmetric with respect to the origin. Furthermore, the uncertain parameters do not have to be linearly independent to each other.

Retrievals of surface reflectances from AVIRIS data

A method for retrieving surface reflectances from spectral data collected by the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) is being developed. In this method, the integrated water vapor amount on a pixel by pixel basis is derived from the 0.94- and 1.14-micron water vapor features. The water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2) and methane (CH4) transmission spectrum in the 0.4-2.5 micron region is calculated. The derived water vapor value and the solar and observational geometry are used in the calculation. The AVIRIS spectrum is ratioed against the transmission spectrum to obtain the surface reflectance spectrum. Major mineral absorption features near 2.2 microns in retrieved reflectance spectra can be identified. Different vegetation absorption characteristics are observed. At present, the method is most useful for deriving surface reflectances from AVIRIS data measured on clear days with high visibilities.

Experimental and theoretical studies of the He(2+)-He system - Differential cross sections for direct, single-, and double-charge-transfer scattering at keV energies

Measurements and calculations of differential cross sections for direct scattering, single-charge transfer, and double-charge transfer in collisions of 1.5-, 2.0-, 6.0-, and 10.0-keV (He-3)2+ with an He-4 target are reported. The measurements cover laboratory scattering angles below 1.5 deg with an angular resolution of about 0.03 deg. A quantum-mechanical molecular-state representation is employed in the calculations; in the case of single-charge transfer a two-state close-coupling calculation is carried out taking into account electron-translation effects. The theoretical calculations agree well with the experimental results for direct scattering and double-charge transfer. The present calculation identifies the origins of oscillatory structures observed in the differential cross sections.

Clustering of very luminous infrared galaxies and their environment

The IRAS survey reveals a class of ultraluminous infrared (IR) galaxies (ULIRG's) with IR luminosities comparable to the bolometric luminosities of quasars. The nature, origin, and evolution of ULIRG's are attracting more and more attention recently. Since galaxy morphology is certainly a function of environment, morphological observations show that ULIRG's are interacting/merging galaxies, and some ULIRG's might be the dust-enshrouded quasars (S88) or giant ellipticals, the study of ULIRG's environment and large scale clustering effects should be worthwhile. ULIRG's and very luminous IR galaxies have been selected from the 2Jy IRAS redshift survey. Meanwhile, a catalog of IRAS groups of galaxies has been constructed using a percolation-like algorithm. Therefore, whether ULIRG's and/or VLIRG's have a group environment can be checked immediately. Other aspects of the survey are discussed.

Comparison of column water vapor measurements using downward-looking near-infrared and infrared imaging systems and upward-looking microwave radiometers

Remote soundings of precipitable water vapor from three systems are compared with each other and with ground truth from radiosondes. Ancillary data from a mesoscale network of surface observing stations and from wind-profiling radars are also used in the analysis. The three remote-sounding techniques are: (a) a reflectance technique using spectral data collected by the Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer; (b) an emission technique using Visible-Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) data acquired from the NOAA's GOES; and (c) a microwave technique using data from a limited network of three ground-based dual-channel microwave radiometers. The data were taken over the Front Range of eastern Colorado on 22-23 March 1990. The generally small differences between the three types of remote-sounding measurements are consistent with the horizontal and temporal resolutions of the instruments. The microwave and optical reflectance measurements agreed to within 0.1 cm; comparisons of the microwave data with radiosondes were also either as good or explainable. The largest differences between the VAS and the microwave radiometer at Elbert were between 0.4 and 0.5 cm and appear to be due to variable terrain within the satellite footprint.

Single-parameter characterization of discrete-dislocation pileup tipfield and its application to physically based micro-mechanics

The equivalence between continuous dislocation pileups and cracks is reviewed. The force on the leading dislocation is defined and a general method of calculation of the force is proposed. The equivalence relations are given. Based on the analysis by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro and the numerical calculations by Chou and Li and Armstrong et al, it will be shown that the force, F, on the locked leading dislocation of a discrete pileup is capable of characterizing uniquely the stress, strain, and displacement fields at the tip of the pileup, including the positions of the discrete mobile dislocations behind the leading dislocation. Conversely, the positions of the mobile dislocations can be used to measure F. If the propagation of micro-slips and the initiation of micro-fractures at the tip of a pileup are controlled by resolved shear stress and normal cleavage stress respectively, the resolved shear stress intensity coefficient, ReSIC, and the resolved cleavage stress intensity coefficient, ReCIC, must be constant.

Remote sensing of water vapor in the near IR from EOS/MODIS

Consideration is given to the selection of spectral channels in the near-infrared IR which are to be employed for the derivation of total column water vapor using the MODIS instrument on the NASA's Earth Observing System. Data obtained show that the three near-IR water vapor channels on the MODIS instrument enable remote sensing of the total column water vapor with an absolute accuracy of +/- 13 percent. An absolute accuracy of +/-7 percent can be obtained if additional MODIS channels are used to decrease the effect of uncertainty in the spectral reflectance of the surface, subpixel clouds, haze, and temperature profile on the derived water vapor.

Air-surface exchange of H2O, CO2, and O3 at a tallgrass prairie in relation to remotely sensed vegetation indices

Parameters derived from eddy correlation measurements of the air-surface exchange rates of H2O, CO2, and O3 over a tallgrass prairie are examined in terms of their relationships with spectral reflectance data remotely sensed from aircraft and satellites during the four 1987 intensive field campaigns of the First ISLSCP Field Experiment (FIFE). The surface conductances were strongly modulated by photosynthetically active radiation received at the surface when the grass was green and well watered; mesophyll resistances were large for CO2 but negligible for H2O and O3.

An operational method for estimating signal to noise ratios from data acquired with imaging spectrometers

A method, using the concept of local means and local standard deviations of small imaging blocks and using a box counting procedure, has been developed for unsupervised estimation of the average signal to noise ratios of images in which the noise is additive. The method has been applied to simulated images with Gaussian noise, to images acquired with the Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer and with the Geophysical and Environmental Research Imaging Spectrometer. The method is compared with other techniques for estimating signal to noise ratios from imaging data. It is believed that the method is generally applicable to images having many small homogeneous blocks. Because the method does not take into account interband effects, it is not appropriate to use the method to estimate signal to noise ratios from images having nonnegligible interband radiometric calibration errors at spatial scales less than or equal to the size of the small imaging blocks used in the noise estimation.

Stratospheric circulation features deduced from SAMS constituent data

Further analyses of three years of SAMS data are used to investigate stratospheric circulation. Eddy effects on constituent transport are examined with two transport formulations - the transformed Eulerian mean formulation and the effective transport formulation. The transformed Eulerian mean formulation, together with calculated residual mean winds, is employed to delineate regions, or times, of significant eddy contributions to constituent transport. The effective transport formulation, which involves individual calculations of the effective-transport velocity for both CH4 and N2O, is used. Both gases reveal a descent in the tropics during northern spring and upwelling in the summer tropics of the stratosphere during solstice. The Northern Hemisphere upwelling appears to cause larger CH4 increases than corresponding Southern Hemisphere summer tropical upwelling.

Cirrus cloud detection from airborne imaging spectrometer data using the 1.38 micron water vapor band

Using special images acquired by the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) at 20 km altitude, we show that wavelengths close to the center of the strong 1.38 micron water vapor band are useful for detecting thin cirrus clouds. The detection makes use of the fact that cirrus clouds are located above almost all the atmospheric water vapor. Because of the strong water vapor absorption in the lower atmosphere, AVIRIS channels near 1.38 micron receive little scattered solar radiance from the surface of low level clouds. When cirrus clouds are present, however, these channels receive large amounts of scattered solar radiance from the cirrus clouds. Our ability to determine cirrus cloud cover using space-based remote sensing will be improved if channels near the center of the 1.38 micron water vapor band are added to future satellites.

Explicit asymmetric bounds for robust stability of continuous and discrete-time systems

The problem of robust stability in linear systems with parametric uncertainties is considered. Explicit stability bounds on uncertain parameters are derived and expressed in terms of linear inequalities for continuous systems, and inequalities with quadratic terms for discrete-times systems. Cases where system parameters are nonlinear functions of an uncertainty are also examined.
