X-ray spectroscopic investigation of crystal fields in Ce 2 Rh 1 − x Ir x In 8 heavy fermions

The higher dimensionality in the crystal fields of the Ce 2 M In 8 ( M = Rh , Ir ) compounds and its interplay with hybridization and disorder are key ingredients to understand the complex phase diagrams by this family, which have been explored extensively by macroscopic techniques. Here, we present an investigation of the crystal-electric field schemes of Ce 2 Rh 1 − x Ir x In 8 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our full multiplet calculations for the 4 f 1 configuration of Ce 3 + to describe the temperature-dependent linear dichroism in Ce 2 M In 8 are consistent with a Γ 7 1 = 1 − α 2 · | ∓ 3 2 〉 − | α | · | ± 5 2 〉 ground state containing a predominant | ± 3 / 2 〉 contribution that increases further with x . This enhancement is believed to favor superconductivity in Ce-based heavy fermion materials, observed in previous results in the Ce M In 5 family. Our recent observations shed light on the unexpected emergence of the ambient-pressure superconducting dome in the center of the composition phase diagram and its subsequent suppression on the Ir-rich side due to the early onset of fluctuations associated with the structurally more disordered state, inferred from previous neutron magnetic diffraction experiments. Nodal fermions in the strongly spin-orbit coupled pyrochlore-lattice compound RbBi2

We explore the topological electronic band structure of the pyrochlore lattice in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, first-principles calculations, and symmetry analysis, we have investigated the bulk electronic structure of RbBi2, which has a Bi pyrochlore network. We observe the presence of 3D massless Dirac fermions enforced by nonsymmorphic symmetry, as well as a 3D quadratic band crossing protected by cubic crystalline symmetry. Furthermore, we identify an additional 3D linear Dirac dispersion associated with band inversion protected by threefold rotation symmetry. These observations reveal the rich band topology of itinerant pyrochlore lattice systems in the strong SOC limit and serve as a starting point to explore correlated topological phases in geometrically frustrated lattices.

Ultrafast dynamics of a fermion chain in a terahertz field-driven optical cavity

In this article, we study the effect of a terahertz field-driven single cavity mode for ultrafast control of a fermion chain with dissipation-induced nonlinearity and quadratic coupling to an infrared-active phonon mode. Unlike the first-order phase transition in the nonequilibrium steady state of the system without a cavity or with a high-quality cavity, we find that a realistic dissipation in a low-quality driven cavity process prevents such a transition. Without realistic photon loss from the cavity, the transition only survives for the lower phonon-polariton branch with strong drive; a weak laser field fails to induce the phase transition and renders the polaritons symmetrical. The ability to control the phase transition is crucial for realizing strongly modulated steady states; we propose experimentally feasible regimes where this occurs.

Mass gaps of a Z 3 gauge theory with three fermion flavors in 1 + 1 dimensions

We consider a Z 3 gauge theory coupled to three degenerate massive flavors of fermions, which we term Quantum Z(3) Dynamics, QZD. The spectrum can be computed in 1 + 1 dimensions using tensor networks. In weak coupling the spectrum is that of the expected mesons and baryons, although the corrections in weak coupling are nontrivial, analogous to those of nonrelativistic QED in 1 + 1 dimensions. In strong coupling, besides the usual baryon, the singlet meson is a baryon-antibaryon state. For two special values of the coupling constant, the lightest baryon is degenerate with the lightest octet meson, and the lightest singlet meson, respectively. Fixed lines in four fermion models in two dimensions

Motivated by conjectures about near-horizon dynamics in quantum gravity, we search for lines of perturbatively accessible fixed points emanating from models of N free fermions. Through two loops we find a new class of models, apart from the well-known Abelian Thirring models. Further study is needed to see whether these can lead to true conformal manifolds, or perhaps a new class of large- N fixed points. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Renormalization-group running of dimension-8 four-fermion operators in the SMEFT

We compute the renormalization-group equations governing the evolution of dimension-8 four-fermion operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). We describe the calculation and present analytic results for both the full flavor structure of the SMEFT and with the assumption of minimal flavor violation. We present numerical results for the renormalization-group evolution of the coefficients, and study their impact on fits of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Drell-Yan data. The effects of running on the dimension-8 coefficients can reach 50% or more when evolving from 10 TeV scale down to few-GeV energies relevant for the analysis of fixed-target data. However, the impact of the dimension-8 running on the analysis of Drell-Yan data from the LHC is minimal.

Fermion determinants on a quantum computer

We present a quantum algorithm to compute the logarithm of the determinant of the fermion matrix, assuming access to a classical lattice gauge field configuration. The algorithm uses the quantum eigenvalue transform, and quantum mean estimation, giving a query complexity that scales like O ( V log ( V ) ) in the matrix dimension V . Chiral edge states on spheres for lattice domain wall fermions

Recently Weyl edge states on manifolds in dimension 𝑑 +1 with a connected 𝑑-dimensional boundary were proposed as candidates for lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories, for even 𝑑. The examples considered to date include solid cylinders in any odd dimension, and the 3 ball with boundary 𝑆 2 . Here we consider the general case of a (𝑑+1)-dimensional ball for any even 𝑑 and show that the theory for the edge states on 𝑆 𝑑 describe a conventional Weyl fermion on a sphere with half-integer momenta. A possible advantage of such theories is that they can be discretized by a square lattice without breaking the underlying discrete hypercubic symmetry.

Search for a Neutral Gauge Boson with Nonuniversal Fermion Couplings in Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The first search for a heavy neutral spin-1 gauge boson (𝑍′) with nonuniversal fermion couplings produced via vector boson fusion processes and decaying to tau leptons or 𝑊 bosons is presented. The analysis is performed using LHC data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV, collected from 2016 to 2018 with the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The data are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits are set on the product of the cross section for production of the 𝑍′ boson and its branching fraction to 𝜏⁢𝜏 or 𝑊⁢𝑊. The presence of a 𝑍′ boson decaying to 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − (𝑊 + ⁢𝑊 − ) is excluded for masses up to 2.45(1.60) TeV, depending on the 𝑍′ boson coupling to standard model weak bosons, and assuming a 𝑍′→𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − (𝑊 + ⁢𝑊 − ) branching fraction of 50%.

Fermionic sub-GeV dark matter from evaporating primordial black holes at DarkSide-50

We present a search for boosted dark matter from primordial black hole (PBH) evaporation using the DarkSide-50 ionization-signal-only dataset corresponding to the experiment’s ( 12202 ± 180 ) kg d exposure. We focus on evaporation of PBHs with masses in the range [ 10 14 , 10 16 ] g producing Dirac fermionic dark matter particles with sub-GeV kinetic energy. These relativistic particles, with energies up to hundreds of MeV, can generate detectable signals for masses below O ( 100 ) MeV . The absence of a signal enables setting complementary limits to those derived from cosmological observations and direct detection searches for cosmic-ray-boosted dark matter.

Spacetime quantum mechanics for bosonic and fermionic systems

We provide a Hilbert space approach to quantum mechanics where space and time are treated on an equal footing. Our approach replaces the standard dependence on an external classical time parameter with a spacetime-symmetric algebraic structure, thereby unifying the axioms that traditionally distinguish the treatment of spacelike and timelike separations. Standard quantum evolution can be recovered from timelike correlators, defined by means of a quantum action operator, a quantum version of the action of classical mechanics. The corresponding map also provides an alternative perspective on the path integral formulation that, in the case of fermions, does not require the use of Grassmann variables. In addition, the formalism can be interpreted in terms of generalized quantum states, codifying both the conventional information of a quantum system at a given time and its evolution. We show that these states are solutions to a quantum principle of stationary action grounded in timelike correlations and pseudo-entropies.

Chiral rank-$k$ truncations for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD

We present a modification to the setup algorithm for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD. A larger number of test vectors than that used in conventional multigrid is generated by the smoother. This set of test vectors is then truncated by a singular value decomposition on the chiral components of the test vectors, which are subsequently used to form the prolongation and restriction matrices of the multigrid hierarchy. This modification is demonstrated to improve the convergence of linear equations on an anisotropic lattice with 𝑚𝜋 ≈ 280 MeV from the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration and an isotropic lattice with 𝑚𝜋 ≈ 220 MeV from the MILC Collaboration. The lattice volume dependence of the method is also examined.

Phase transitions in fermionic systems with many-body interaction

A linearized version of the Hartree-Fock method is used as a probe to investigate phase transitions in fermionic systems with many-body interactions. An application to a new exactly solvable model which includes two- and three-body forces is shown.
