An analysis of job placement patterns of black and non-black male and female undergraduates at the University of Virginia and Hampton Institute

Research questions were proposed to determine the relationship between independent variables (race, sex, and institution attended) and dependent variables (number of job offers received, salary received, and willingness to recommend source of employer contact). The control variables were academic major, grade point average, placement registration, nonemployment activity, employer, and source of employer contact. An analysis of the results revealed no statistical significance of the institution attended as a predictor of job offers or salary, although significant relationships were found between race and sex and number of job offers received. It was found that academic major, grade point average, and source of employer contact were more useful than race in the prediction of salary. Sex and nonemployment activity were found to be the most important variables in the model. The analysis also indicated that Black students received more job offers than non-Black students.

Phenotype and Age Differences in Blood Gas Characteristics, Electrolytes, Hemoglobin, Plasma Glucose and Cortisol in Female Squirrel Monkeys

Due to its small size, lower cost, tractable nature, successful breeding in captivity and its status near the middle of the primate phylogenetic scale, the squirrel monkey has become an attractive primate model for basic and biomedical research. Although the squirrel monkey now is being used more extensively in many laboratories with diverse interests, only fragmentary reports have been published regarding basic physiological characteristics, or baseline blood reference values of different phenotypes, particularly blood gases, hematology and serum chemical constituents. It is becoming recognized increasingly that these baseline blood reference values are important not only in the care and maintenance of the squirrel monkey, but are critical for assessing normal physiological status, as well as the effects of various experimental treatments. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in blood gases, electrolytes, hematology, blood glucose and cortisol among young and old Bolivian (Roman type) and Colombian (Gothic type) phenotypes of the squirrel monkey.

Baseline Assumptions and Ersatz Waste Streams for Partial Gravity Habitats with Mobile Female and Male Crew

Effective and reliable water management and recovery systems will be required to support human missions beyond the low Earth orbit (LEO) of the International Space Station (ISS). Lunar and Mars surface missions will introduce new challenges to managing water and associated waste streams from mobile crew members who are transiting between up to six living shelters in extreme environmental conditions under a range of gravity conditions. A review of baseline assumptions for the human activities and associated air and water cycles in and between transit vehicle, orbiting station, lander-ascent vehicle, surface habitat, pressurized rover, and suits is conducted. The paper updates ersatz formulations and water flow rates for the main liquid water waste streams of urine, humidity condensate, hygiene, and laundry. Emphasis is placed on the metabolic emissions partitioning between the six vehicles during a design reference mission scenario. Ersatz to represent menses are reviewed.
