NEAMS-Multiphysics MOOSE End Year Framework Activities FY20

The Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) is a general finite element package meant for high performance solution of multiphysics problems in science and engineering. In this report, we present additions and enhancements to MOOSE funded by the Nuclear Engineering Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program. NEAMS-funded MOOSE framework library improvements include: expansion of support for multi-level multi-application restart; enhancement of coupling between native MOOSE applications and external libraries; addition of a sparse automatic differentiation (AD) container enabling non-local degree of freedom coupling; block-specific quadrature rules; further development of an eigenvalue executioner; faster setup of periodic boundary conditions; and creation of a mesh meta-data system streamlining simulation startup. Besides developing the framework library, NEAMS funds were used to overhaul a swath of important MOOSE infrastructure in order to substantially improve user experience. These critical infrastructure changes included adapting MOOSE to python 3, improving the test harness to catch race conditions, and most importantly transitioning MOOSE to use Conda, a globally known packaging system, that greatly eases software adoption.

FY20 Improvements to CTF Code Verification and Unit Testing

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy created its first Energy Innovation Hub, which focuses on improving Light Water Reactors (LWRs) through Modeling and Simulation. This hub, named the Consortium for the Advanced Simulation of LWRs (CASL), attempts to characterize and understand LWR behavior under normal operating conditions and use any gained insights to improve their efficiency. In collaboration with North Carolina State University (NCSU), CASL has worked extensively on the thermal-hydraulic subchannel code Coolant Boiling in Rod Arrays–Three Field (COBRA-TF). The NCSU/CASL version of COBRA-TF has been rebranded as CTF. This document focuses on code verification test problems that ensure CTF converges to the correct answer for the intended application. The suite of code verification tests are mapped to the underlying conservation equations of CTF, and significant gaps are addressed. Convergence behavior and numerical errors are quantified for each of the tests. Tests that converge at the correct rate to the corresponding analytic solution are incorporated into the CTF automated regression suite. A new verification utility is created for this purpose, which enables code verification by generalizing the process. For problems that do not behave correctly, the results are reported but the problem is not included in the regression suite. In addition to verification studies, this document also quantifies the existing tests of constitutive models. A few existing gaps are addressed by adding new unit tests.

Part II: FY20 CIF Annual Report - LAPS: Lunar Autonomous Positioning System

This project concerns construction of an orbital and ground resource network that provides Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services for lunar surface operations. While functionally similar to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for Earth, this system will instead build an automated PNT framework utilizing limited infrastructure on board orbiting assets along with a controlled number of highly accurate assets, or anchor nodes. The goal is to use advanced algorithms to autonomously coordinate on demand or as needed asset participation to achieve orbit determination and time synchronization of accuracy sufficient for end-user localization. Other proposed lunar PNT solutions, such as weak signal GPS, will not meet many mission localization requirements without additional user INS augmentation and a dedicated GNSS constellation would require prohibitive infrastructure development. This proposed effort, the Lunar Autonomous Positioning System (LAPS), instead offers a design that could be deployed in the near term and is facilitated by accessible hardware technology.

FY20 NREL Overview: Transforming Energy

At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), we are transforming today’s energy challenges into tomorrow’s solutions. Our scientific research and technological innovation will shape a highly efficient and resilient energy future. Our world is transforming around us with energy solutions becoming cleaner, cheaper, renewable, and more resilient. As the population grows and new technologies and devices are added to the grid, we must examine the effects and enhance security within our most critical systems. As environmental threats expand and human demands on urban centers increase, we need more sustainable and efficient ways of generating energy that considers resource competition worldwide. We need our grid to be adaptive, autonomous, and responsive. NREL continues to anticipate these challenges, offering solutions through research, innovation, analysis, partners, and people. We are building the foundation of tomorrow’s energy landscape and inspiring the economic growth of the future.

FY20, 3rd Quarter, Multi-pass Hybrid Laser Arc Welding of Alloy 740H

Although progress has been slowed by telecommuting restrictions at INL and PSU, progress has been made by PSU on modeling and simulation of deep penetration laser welding. Additionally, both INL and PSU has received critical equipment, in the form of high-powered laser wobble heads, needed to verify the modeling and simulation results. The equipment was installed at INL and preliminary tests, based on a test matrix that was developed in this 3rd quarter, will be made early in the 4th quarter. Similarly, the PSU laser wobble head is expected to be installed early in the 4th quarter and preliminary experiments are expected to commence shortly thereafter. Completion dates on a few milestones have been impacted and new dates proposed.

Corrosion Behavior of Developmental Iron Phosphate Waste Forms: FY20 Status Report

Corrosion tests were performed to assess the dissolution behaviors of developmental iron phosphate materials that are being evaluated as an alternative to the glass-bonded sodalite ceramic waste form to immobilize salt wastes from electrochemical separation operations. Production of the iron phosphate waste form results in dehalogenation of the waste salt that increases potential waste loading. Ferric oxide is added to the waste form to increase the chemical durability. Tests conducted to optimize the amount of ferric oxide used to make the waste form are summarized in this report. Specimens prepared from materials made with between 17 and 34 mole % ferric oxide were subjected to two test methods to assess the effects of the iron content on the relative durability and retention of immobilized salt cations including cesium, strontium, and neodymium. Modified ASTM C1308 test results show the intrinsic durability was significantly higher for materials made with 27 mol % ferric oxide. Further additions generated iron-rich inclusion phases and did not improve durability. Modified ASTM C1285 test results show that solution feedback attenuates the dissolution rate similar to what is observed for borosilicate glasses within seven days. Analyses of test specimens after 42 days show no evidence that surface layers formed. Combined with previous studies addressing the salt loading, a composition region of the ammonium (di)hydrogen phosphate-waste salt-ferric oxide ternary has been defined for durable waste form compositions. Materials with that composition can be used to determine optimal processing conditions, assess long-term performance, and parameterize a degradation model.
