Crack toughness evaluation of hot pressed and forged beryllium.

Fracture toughness tests at room temperature were made on three-point loaded beryllium bend specimens cut from hot pressed block and a forged disk. These specimens had plane proportions conforming to ASTM E 399 and covered a thickness range of from 1/32 to 1/2 in. Two sets of bend specimens were tested, one having fatigue cracks and the other 0.5 mil radius notches. One objective of the investigation was the development of techniques to produce fatigue cracks in accordance with the procedures specified in ASTM E 399. This objective was achieved for the hot pressed material. In plane cracks were not consistently produced in the specimens cut from forged stock.

Compression behavior of the forged Ll2 compounds Al67Ti25Cr8 and Al66Ti25Mn9

The paper presents the findings of a compression study as a function of temperature from cryogenic temperatures to 1373 K at a strain rate of about 0.0001/s on forged Al67Ti25Cr8 and Al66Ti25Mn9 compounds. The creep response of these alloys is analyzed at strain rates varying from 2 x 10 to the -4th to 2 x 10 to the -7th /s at 1000 K and 1100 K. It is shown that as-cast microstructures for both compounds are dendritic, while both intermetallics forged very well with no edge cracking, with the microstructures appearing fully recrystallized. True comprehensive stress-strain diagrams determined at 1100 K as a function of nominal strain rate reveal a range of behaviors in both materials.

Behavior of Forged S-816 Turbine Blades in Steady-state Operation of J33-9 Turbojet Engine with Stress-rupture and Metallographic Evaluations / by F. B.garrett, C. A. Gyorgak, and J. W. Weeton

An investigation was conducted to determine the behavior of recently produced, forged S-816 turbine blades in a full-scale turbojet engine, and in particular, the scatter in performance of the alloy. The turbine blades were operated as continuously as possible at a temperature of 1500 degrees F and a centrifugal stress of 21,500 pounds per square inch. The operating lives of the turbine blades varied from 181 to 539 hours, a range of 358 hours. Stress-rupture properties of specimens cut from blade airfoils also varied considerably, as much as 1257 hours at 20,000 pounds per square inch and 1500 degrees F. Since the variability of scatter of stress-rupture data is greater than that of blade performance, the scatter is probably caused by variations in the properties of the forged blades rather than by variations caused by engine operation or installation of the blades. Metallographic examinations were made to determine possible causes of the scatter and although numerous differences in microstructures of blades were found, no consistent tendencies were observed and the findings did not permit an explanation of the scatter of blade performance. The results of the metallographic examinations and of the physical tests indirectly indicated variables in the fabricating method caused the scatter in properties.

Utah FORGE: InSAR Data Best Pairs

This submission provides Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data covering the Utah FORGE site via the TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellite missions operated by the German Space Agency (DLR). Data was collected between 2019/01/01 and 2023/06/30. Interferometric pairs (interferograms) were created using generic mapping tool GMT-SAR processing software. The best 112 pairs were selected based on having short orbital separations (perpendicular baseline less than 5 meters in absolute value).

Corrosion mechanism of cold forged 316 stainless steel in molten FLiNaK salt

This study examined how cold forging (CF) affects the corrosion of 316 stainless steel (SS) in molten FLiNaK salt at 700 °C for 48 h. CF samples had two corrosion areas: one near the top and another displaying intergranular corrosion (IGC). Samples with lower CF (5–30 %) showed more IGC, while the 50 % CF sample had less IGC but the shallowest corrosion depth. This was due to the increased number of grain boundaries, which raised the potential corrosion initiation sites, and certain grain boundaries promoting chromium dissolution, thus enhancing IGC.

Adaptively remeshed multiphysical modeling of resistance forge welding with experimental validation of residual stress fields and measurement processes

Welding processes used in the production of pressure vessels impart residual stresses in the manufactured component. Computational modeling is critical to predicting these residual stress fields and understanding how they interact with notches and flaws to impact pressure vessel durability. Here, in this work, we present a finite element model for a resistance forge weld and validate it using laboratory measurements. Extensive microstructural changes, near-melt temperatures, and large localized deformations along the weld interface pose significant challenges to Lagrangian finite element modeling. The proposed modeling approach overcomes these roadblocks in order to provide a high-fidelity simulation that can predict the residual stress state in the manufactured pressure vessel; a rich microstructural constitutive model accounts for material recrystallization dynamics, a frictional-to-tied contact model is coordinated with the constitutive model to represent interfacial bonding, and adaptive remeshing is employed to alleviate severe mesh distortion. An interrupted-weld approach is applied to the simulation to facilitate comparison to displacement measures. Several techniques are employed for residual stress measurement in order to validate the finite element model: neutron diffraction, the contour method, and the slitting method. Model-measurement comparisons are supplemented with detailed simulations that reflect the configurations of the residual-stress measurement processes themselves. The model results show general agreement with experimental measurements, and we observe some similarities in the features around the weld region. Factors that contribute to model-measurement differences are identified. Finally, we conclude with some discussion of the model development and residual stress measurement strategies, including how to best leverage the efforts put forth here for other weld problems.
