The Role and Value of Interregional Transmission in a Decarbonized U.S. Electricity System

Decarbonizing the U.S. energy system entails a significant expansion of wind and solar power and electrification of end-use applications. Achieving both is more efficient and less costly when interregional transmission capacity is expanded, but the fractured nature of grid planning in the United States is often a barrier to such expansion. Here, we explore the role of interregional transmission under a variety of decarbonization scenarios, using a capacity-expansion model to generate co-optimized portfolios of generation, storage, and transmission that meet decarbonization targets and electrification-driven demand. We explore portfolio and cost differences across 92 scenarios, from scenarios with limited transmission expansion to those that include a meshed high-voltage direct current (HVDC) network. In the core decarbonization scenarios, wind capacity expands by ~10x and solar by ~20x compared to 2020, hundreds of gigawatts of battery storage are deployed, and interregional transmission expands by 3-6x. Transmission expansion occurs nationwide but is concentrated between the central "wind belt" and eastern load centers. The HVDC scenarios result in hundreds of billions of dollars of savings in total system cost, demonstrating the economic benefits of interregional transmission in support of rapid decarbonization.

Characterizing the Oscillatory Properties of Bulk Electric Systems

This paper presents a process for characterizing the oscillatory dynamics of a large bulk power system. As a demonstration, the process is applied to the Western Interconnection of North America. Several complementary analysis approaches, both new and existing, are employed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the oscillatory properties of the system. Established modal analysis techniques based on ringdown and mode-meter algorithms are utilized. In addition, we derive and apply methods based on spectral correlation analysis to identify modal frequencies, distinguish between modes that are closely spaced in frequency, and determine locations at which the modes are observable. Critical interarea modes are identified and characterized using actual-system synchrophasor measurements taken over several years of operation in concert with industry-standard simulation models. This includes 145 hours of PMU data and two planning base cases.

ARC-SAFE: Accelerated Response semiconducting Contactors and Surge Attenuation For DC Electrical systems (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

The landscape of power transmission and distribution is quickly evolving as more power conversion is done through power electronics and transmitted or distributed at medium voltage direct current (MVDC). As power electronics tend to store less energy and be less resilient to faults than conventional power transformers, a reliable and fast protection against faults is critical to protect power electronics (PE) based infrastructure, especially for medium- and high-voltage applications. This motivates the development of PE based protection circuits to replace slower contemporary electromechanical breakers. In this project a novel PE based MVDC circuit breaker is developed; the new design is comprised of 1) a normally-on leg made of commercially-available, cascaded SiC junction field effect transistors (JFETs) with a passive balancing network, and 2) a normally-off leg based on an optically-triggered gallium nitride (GaN) photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS). The normally-off leg was designed to be quickly turned on, to divert current to an auxiliary dissipative circuit, as the normally-on leg is turned off. This approach, using solid-state devices, was selected for a high-performance, fast-switching operation for the DC circuit breaker as compared to approaches that use slower mechanical switches. To be practical, the circuit breaker must have low conduction loss (low Ron) in the normally-on leg and fast coordinated triggering of the normally-off leg to avoid damage from inductive flyback, which could be considerable for long lengths of cable.

Optimal Operation and Impact Assessment of Distributed Wind for Improving Efficiency and Resilience of Rural Electricity Systems

This project aims to empower rural utilities by developing advanced optimization models and algorithms for effectively integrating distributed wind energy alongside battery storage and other distributed energy resources (DERs). The primary objectives are to reduce peak demand, ensure reliable emergency power supply, and regulate voltage and frequency. To address operational challenges, the project introduces innovative mitigation strategies and ultrafast assessment frameworks to evaluate the impacts of distributed wind and DERs on rural grids, offering actionable solutions to potential issues. Economic viability is assessed through cost-benefit analysis using real rural utility data, ensuring the practical application of the project outcomes.

Heat Wave Impacts on Western US Electricity System

Visualization of hourly generation, load, unserved load, and locational marginal energy prices in the western United States during a July 22-28 heatwave event in 2018 and 2058. In addition to hourly time series data of each of the parameters, choropleth maps showing the hourly value for each balancing authority are provided as well as a county-level choropleth map of temperature.

Design, performance, and evaluation of a direct-current contactor for space nuclear electrical systems

A direct-current contactor for use in large space power systems was designed, built, and tested. It was developed to be operational in an environment of 540 C and at a pressure of 0.0001 N/sq m or lower. The contactor is rated to pass 10 A continuously and to interrupt a 20-A current at 10,000 V. It was tested to determine the corona threshold level and the leakage current at different temperatures. Also, it was tested for its closing and interruption ability.
