Universality (beyond leading log) of soft radiative corrections to $\hat q$ in $p_\perp$ broadening and energy loss

It has been known for many years that soft radiation can give potentially large double-logarithm corrections to $p_\perp$ broadening of a high-energy particle traveling through QCD matter, but that this soft radiation correction can be absorbed into an effective value $\hat q_{eff}$ for the medium $p_\perp$-broadening parameter $\hat q$. Here ``soft'' means high energy compared to medium scales but soft compared to the original high-energy particle traveling through the medium. A similar situation arises in the case of soft corrections to hard splitting of a high-energy particle, such as hard g → gg, where double logarithms can also be absorbed using the same effective $\hat q_{eff}$. In this paper, I study whether the same holds true for potentially large, subleading, {\it single}-logarthim corrections. The correspondence is more indirect for single logarithms, but I show (in the large-$N_c$ limit) that single logarithms from soft radiation in the case of $p_\perp$ broadening also determine the single logarithms from soft radiative corrections to hard g → gg splitting. Along the way, there is an interesting variation of the original BDMPS-Z calculation of splitting rates in the q(hat) approximation. I also discuss how, for soft-radiative corrections to hard splitting processes, there are two different types of ''$\hat q_{eff}$'' that come into play, which differ by ''$i\pi$'' terms that multiply single logarithms.

Mediating Photochemical Reaction Rates at Lewis Acidic Rare Earths by Selective Energy Loss to 4f-Electron States

Manifesting chemical differences in individual rare earth (RE) element complexes is challenging due to the similar sizes of the tripositive cations and the corelike 4f shell. In this work, we disclose a new strategy for differentiating between similarly sized Dy 3+ and Y 3+ ions through a tailored photochemical reaction of their isostructural complexes in which the f-electron states of Dy 3+ act as an energy sink. Complexes RE(hfac) 3 (NMMO) 2 (RE = Dy (2-Dy) and Y (2-Y), hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, and NMMO = N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide) showed variable rates of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) to triphenylphosphine under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, as monitored by 1 H and 19 F NMR spectroscopies. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) identified the excited state(s) responsible for the photochemical OAT reaction or lack thereof. Competing sensitization pathways leading to excited-state deactivation in 2-Dy through energy transfer to the 4f electron manifold ultimately slows the OAT reaction at this metal cation. The measured rate differences between the open-shell Dy 3+ and closed-shell Y 3+ complexes demonstrate that using established principles of 4f ion sensitization may deliver new, selective modalities for differentiating the RE elements that do not depend on cation size.

Search for heavy, long-lived, charged particles with large ionisation energy loss in $pp$ collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV using the ATLAS experiment and the full Run 2 dataset

This paper presents a search for hypothetical massive, charged, long-lived particles with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collisions at √s =13 TeV. These particles are expected to move significantly slower than the speed of light and should be identifiable by their high transverse momenta and anomalously large specific ionisation losses, dE/dx. Trajectories reconstructed solely by the inner tracking system and a dE/dx measurement in the pixel detector layers provide sensitivity to particles with lifetimes down to O(1) ns with a mass, measured using the Bethe–Bloch relation, ranging from 100 GeV to 3 TeV. Interpretations for pair-production of R-hadrons, charginos and staus in scenarios of supersymmetry compatible with these particles being long-lived are presented, with mass limits extending considerably beyond those from previous searches in broad ranges of lifetime.

Correlation of Dimer-Linker-Induced Conformational Lock with Nonradiative Energy Loss in Organic Solar Cells

The efficiencies of dimer-based devices still lag those of their small molecule-based counterparts. This is primarily due to the considerable dihedrals in the dimer skeleton, which compromises the molecular packing, thus influencing the charge generation and nonradiative voltage loss (ΔV oc,nr ). Herein, we developed two dimeric acceptors with varied π-linkers to investigate the influence of linker-induced conformational lock on ΔV oc,nr . We find that the helically lapped O-shaped dimer delivers better intermolecular packing than the planar S-shaped one that incorporates a bulkier π-linker. However, its planar skeleton is instead more favorable for forming a compact and ordered stacking with the host acceptor in ternary blend. This possibly promotes exciton dissociation, thus reducing the nonradiative decay of excited states. Moreover, its longer exciton lifetime could offer additional charge-transfer channels. Finally, these contributions effectively minimize ΔV oc,nr to 0.195 eV, while delivering a high efficiency approaching 20% in the derived ternary device.
