A program for computing shock-tube gas dynamic properties

Computer program calculates thermodynamic properties from basic spectroscopic data. Program capacity is a mixture of 100 different species composed of ten different elements. The output is a complete thermodynamic and chemical description of the gas.

Dynamic properties of the thermosphere inferred from Pioneer Venus mass spectrometer measurements

The data obtained by the Pioneer Venus spectrometer experiments indicate that the day-night temperature contrast on Venus is associated with wind velocities of about 200 m/s which transport oxygen, helium, and hydrogen toward the night side. A mass exchange with the mesosphere commensurate with an eddy diffusion coefficient of 3 x 10 to the 7th is required to buffer the horizontal advection so as to reproduce the observed day time bulge in oxygen and the small diurnal variations in helium. The observed time response and magnitude of the day-night density variations require transport processes to be effective over time periods between five and ten days, implying a superrotation rate or prevailing winds in excess of 50 m/s at the equator. Nonlinear mass transport results in wave steepening and contributes to the amplification of the density extrema in hydrogen and helium.

Static and dynamic properties of incommensurate smectic-A(IC) liquid crystals

The elasticity, topological defects, and hydrodynamics of the incommensurate smectic A(IC) phase liquid crystals are studied. The phase is characterized by two colinear mass density waves of incommensurate spatial frequency. The elastic free energy is formulated in terms of a displacement field and a phason field. It is found that the topological defects of the system are dislocations with a nonzero phason field and phason field components. A two-dimensional Burgers lattice for these dislocations is introduced. It is shown that the hydrodynamic modes of the phase include first- and second-sound modes whose direction-dependent velocities are identical to those in ordinary smectics.

Monte Carlo calculation of dynamical properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

A new method is introduced for analytically continuing imaginary-time data from quantum Monte Carlo calculations to the real-frequency axis. The method is based on a least-squares-fitting procedure with constraints of positivity and smoothness on the real-frequency quantities. Results are shown for the single-particle spectral-weight function and density of states for the half-filled, two-dimensional Hubbard model.

Dynamical properties of compact groups of galaxies

Radial velocities are presented for 457 galaxies in the 100 Hickson compact groups. More than 84 percent of the galaxies measured have velocities within 1000 km/s of the median velocity in the group. Ninety-two groups have at least three accordant members, and 69 groups have at least four. The radial velocities of these groups range from 1380 to 42,731 km/s with a median of 8889 km/s, corresponding to a median distance of 89/h Mpc. The apparent space density of these systems ranges from 300 to as much as 10 exp 8 sq h/sq Mpc, which exceeds the densities in the centers of rich clusters. The median projected separation between galaxies is 39/h kpc, comparable to the sizes of the galaxies themselves. A significant correlation is found between crossing time and the fraction of gas-rich galaxies in the groups, and a weak anticorrelation is found between crossing time and the luminosity contrast of the first-ranked galaxy.

Dynamic Properties of FeCrMnNi, a High Entropy Alloy

High entropy alloys (HEAs) represent a new class of materials that potentially possess an ideal combination of high strength and ductility and may be candidate materials that can withstand high amounts of damage before failure, especially under extreme conditions. To this end, a series of shock/spall loading experiments were conducted on an Fe/Cr/Mn/Ni HEA to assess not only its equation of state (EOS) but also its resistance to damage and failure. A single-stage light gas gun was used to conduct a series of flyer plate symmetric impact experiments coupled with recovery of the samples for post-mortem microstructural analysis to obtain fundamental understanding regarding the damage morphology. Our results show that the measured EOS for this alloy was in reasonable agreement with an estimated Hugoniot value. Additionally, the spall strength of these alloys was found to vary between 1.4 and 1.9 GPa within the same plate but was comparable to other iron-based conventional alloys. DOE/NV/03624--1059

Some properties of upper atmosphere dynamics

A unifying description is provided of some important dynamic properties of the upper atmosphere in composition and temperature characteristic of a variety of phenomena, including diurnal and seasonal tides, magnetic storms, and momentum coupling with the magnetosphere. A theoretical multiconstituent model is used which can link the large-scale variations of composition and temperature to the dynamics and energetics of the thermosphere. Global mean properties of the thermosphere are reviewed, and an attempt is made to convey some understanding of the dynamic properties of energy and diffusive mass transport in the thermosphere. Attention is given to sources of energy for the thermosphere, the transport processes involved in the solar diurnal tide of the thermosphere, energy and particle sources for the annual tide, feedback from composition changes to wind-field and temperature variations, energy deposition in the thermosphere during magnetic storms and substorms, and momentum source signatures in the thermosphere.

A study of the dynamic tire properties over a range of tire constructions

The dynamic properties of four model aircraft tires of various construction were evaluated experimentally and compared with available theory. The experimental investigation consisted of measuring the cornering force and the self-aligning torque developed by the tires undergoing sinusoidal steering inputs while operating on a small scale, road-wheel tire testing apparatus. The force and moment data from the different tires are compared with both finite- and point-contact patch string theory predictions. In general, agreement between finite contact patch theory and experimental observation is good. A modified string theory is also presented in which coefficients for cornering force and self-aligning torque are determined separately. This theory improves the correspondence between the experimental and analytical data, particularly on tires with relatively high self-aligning torques.
