Two-speed wheel-drive system without lubrication

System based on sprockets and toothed belts provides high and low speeds in forward drive and high speed in reverse. It is inexpensive to produce and maintain, light in weight, reliable, and long-lived without lubrication.

Modeling and Mitigation of dv/dt and Transmission Line Effect for Motor Drive System in Electric Aircraft Propulsion

Due to constraints in space and structure as well as other practical limitations in aircraft system, the motor controller or electric motor are often installed far away from each other and interconnected via long cables. This amplifies the transmission line effect excited by the dv/dt PWM voltage and induces high voltage stress on the machine winding. This paper investigates the state-of-art modeling approaches for such systems, identifies several limitations in matching the tested voltage reflection waveform in terms of peak voltage, oscillation frequency and damping speed, and offers several key considerations not well covered in literature or in engineering practice. It then proposes a practical modeling methodology which, as validated by experimental results, truly captures these critical reflection voltage specs. To mitigate the high peak voltage and strong oscillation, dv/dt filter is applied and a parametric design optimization based on widely adopted LC-R topology is illustrated, which not only alleviates the voltage stress but also minimized the power loss of the passive damping resistor.

Single reflector interference spectrometer and drive system therefor

In a Fourier interference spectrometer of the doublepass retroreflector type, a single mirror is employed in the path of both split beams of an incoming ray to cause them to double back through separate retroreflectors. Changes in optical path length are achieved by linear displacement of both retroreflectors using a motor driven lead screw on one for large, low frequency changes, a moving-coil actuator on the other for smaller, mid-frequency changes and a piezoelectric actuator on one of these two for small, high frequency changes.

Acoustic performance of two 1.83-meter-diameter fans designed for a wind-tunnel drive system

A parametric study was made of the noise generated by two 1.83-m (6-ft) diameter fans operating up to a maximum pressure ratio of 1.03. One fan had 15 rotor blades, 23 stator blades, and a maximum rotational speed of 1200 rpm. The other fan had 9 rotor blades, 13 stator blades, and a maximum speed of 2,000 rpm. The fans were approximately 1/7-scale models of the 12.2-m (40-ft) diameter fans proposed for repowering the NASA-Ames 40- by 80 foot wind tunnel. The fans were operated individually in a 23.8-m (78-ft) long duct. Sound pressure levels in the duct were used to determine radiated acoustic power as fan speed, blade angle, and mass flow were varied. Results show that the low speed fan was slightly quieter than the high speed fan and, when scaled to full scale, would be 16 db quieter than the present wind tunnel fans. The fan noise varied directly with thrust regardless of whether thrust was varied by rotational speed or blade setting for the ranges studied.

Dynamics of drive systems for wind energy conversion

Calculations are performed to determine the dynamic effects of mechanical power transmission from the nacelle of a horizontal axis wind machine to the ground or to an intermediate level. It is found that resonances are likely at 2 or 4/REV, but they occur at low power only, and seem easily correctable. Large reductions are found in the harmonic torque inputs to the generator at powers near rated.

Jet pump-drive system for heat removal

A jet pump, in combination with a TEMP, is employed to assure safe cooling of a nuclear reactor after shutdown. A TEMP, responsive to the heat from the coolant in the secondary flow path, automatically pumps the withdrawn coolant to a higher pressure and thus higher velocity compared to the main flow. The high velocity coolant is applied as a driver flow for the jet pump which has a main flow chamber located in the main flow circulation pump. Upon nuclear shutdown and loss of power for the main reactor pumping system, the TEMP/jet pump combination continues to boost the coolant flow in the direction it is already circulating. During the decay time for the nuclear reactor, the jet pump keeps running until the coolant temperature drops to a lower and safe temperature. At this lower temperature, the TEMP/jet jump combination ceases its circulation boosting operation. The TEMP/jet pump combination is automatic, self-regulating and provides an emergency pumping system free of moving parts.

Impedance control of robots with harmonic drive systems

The design of an impedance controller based on actuator-level feedback is considered. It is shown that actuator effort (e.g. torque) feedback alone is insufficient to achieve satisfactory contact performance. Instead, combined feedback of actuator effort and motion is sufficient to achieve feedback contact performance.

A Moessbauer spectrometer for the mineralogical analysis of the Mars surface: First temperature dependent tests of the detector and drive system

Part of the scientific payload of the Mars-96 mission is a Fe-(57)Mossbauer (MB) spectrometer installed on a small rover to be placed on the surface of Mars. The instrument is under development at the University of Darmstadt. This instrument, with some modifications, is also included in the scientific payload of the proposed MARSNET mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). A similar instrument is currently under development in the US. The reason for developing a Mossbauer spectrometer for space applications is the high abundance of the element iron, especially on the surface of Mars. The elemental composition of Martian soil was determined during the Viking mission in 1976 but not it's mineralogical composition. One believes that it is composed mainly of iron-rich clay minerals, with an iron content of about 14 (plus or minus 2) wt-percent, partly magnetic. Of extremely great interest are the oxidation state of the iron, the magnetic phases and the mineral composition of the Mars surface. To these questions MB spectroscopy can provide important information, which are not available by other methods. We report on first tests of the experimental setup in the temperature range plus 20 C to -70 C, roughly corresponding to the temperature range on the surface of Mars. Also questions concerning the signal/noise ratio (S/N) are discussed.

Carrier-less, anti-backlash planetary drive system

This invention relates to a carrier-less, anti-backlash planetary gear system that has an input sun gear, a force-balancing and planet-alignment 'speeder' gear above the sun gear, a split ring gear that has a fixed lower ring gear coaxial with the sun gear and a rotating upper ring gear also coaxial with the sun gear. A preload bolt is used for securing the split ring gears together. Within the split ring gear is an even number of planet gears between the split ring gear and the sun gear. Each planet gear consists of an upper planet gear, and lower planet gear with the upper and lower planet gears splined together and pushed apart by a spring which causes separation and relative twist between the upper and lower planet gears. The lower planet gear meshes with the input sun gear and the fixed ring gear while the upper planet gear is driven by the lower planet gear and meshes with the rotating ring gear.

Jet pump-drive system for heat removal

The invention does away with the necessity of moving parts such as a check valve in a nuclear reactor cooling system. Instead, a jet pump, in combination with a TEMP, is employed to assure safe cooling of a nuclear reactor after shutdown. A main flow exists for a reactor coolant. A point of withdrawal is provided for a secondary flow. A TEMP, responsive to the heat from said coolant in the secondary flow path, automatically pumps said withdrawn coolant to a higher pressure and thus higher velocity compared to the main flow. During the decay time for the nuclear reactor, the jet pump keeps running until the coolant temperature drops to a lower and safe temperature where the heat is no longer a problem. At this lower temperature, the TEMP/jet pump combination ceases its circulation boosting operation. When the nuclear reactor is restarted and the coolant again exceeds the lower temperature setting, the TEMP/jet pump automatically resumes operation. The TEMP/jet pump combination is thus automatic, self-regulating and provides an emergency pumping system free of moving parts.
