Investigation of Direct Force Control For Aerocapture at Neptune

In this work, a direct force control numerical predictor-corrector guidance architecture is developed to enable Neptune aerocapture using blunt body aeroshells. A linear aerodynamics model is formulated for a Mars Science Laboratory-derived aeroshell. The application of optimal control theory shows that the∆V-minimizing angle of attack and side-slip angle control laws are bang-bang. A closed-loop numerical predictor-corrector direct force control guidance algorithm is developed and numerically simulated using the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories II. A series of Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to assess the guidance robustness to uncertainties in vehicle aerodynamics, atmospheric density, and entry state. For the reference set of uncertainties, the direct force control vehicle achieves 99.7% successful science orbit insertion within a 330 m/s total∆V budget for periapsis raise, apoapsis, inclination, and ascending node corrections. Improved atmospheric knowledge and delivery state accuracy are shown to improve the success to 100% and reduce the∆V to 230 m/s. Direct force control is demonstrated to be an enabling technology for blunt body aerocapture at Neptune while providing comparable performance to existing slender body vehicles studied in literature

Investigation of Direct Force Control for Planetary Aerocapture at Neptune

In this work, a direct force control numerical predictor-corrector guidance architecture is developed to enable Neptune aerocapture using flight-heritage blunt body aeroshells. A linear aerodynamics model is formulated for a Mars Science Laboratory-derived aeroshell. The application of calculus of variations shows that the optimal angle of attack and side-slip angle control laws are bang-bang. A closed-loop numerical predictor-corrector direct force control guidance algorithm is developed and numerically simulated using the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories II. The Monte Carlo simulated trajectories are demonstrated to be robust to the modeled dispersions in aerodynamics, atmospheric density, and entry state. An aerocapture technology trade study demonstrates that blunt body direct force control aerocapture enables similar performance as slender body bank angle control but halves the peak g-loading.

Direct Adaptive Control Of An Industrial Robot

Decentralized direct adaptive control scheme for six-jointed industrial robot eliminates part of overall computational burden imposed by centralized controller and degrades performance of robot by reducing sampling rate. Control and controller-adaptation laws based on observed performance of manipulator: no need to model dynamics of robot. Adaptive controllers cope with uncertainties and variations in robot and payload.

Impact of longitudinal flying qualities upon the design of a transport with active controls

Direct constrained parameter optimization was used to optimally size a medium range transport for minimum direct operating cost. Several stability and control constraints were varied to study the sensitivity of the configuration to specifying the unaugmented flying qualities of transports designed with relaxed static stability. Additionally, a number of handling quality related design constants were studied with respect to their impact to the design.

Experimental study on direct adaptive control of a PUMA 560 industrial robot

The implementation and experimental validation of a direct adaptive control scheme on a PUMA 560 industrial robot is discussed. The design theory for direct adaptive control of manipulators is outlined and the test facility and software are described. Results are presented from the experiments on the simultaneous control of all of the six joint angles and control of the end-effector position and orientation of the robot. Also, the possible applications of the direct adaptive control scheme are considered.

Some applications of direct adaptive control to large structural systems

Direct multivariable model reference adaptive control (DMMRAC) applications are considered with a representative example of a large structural system (LSS). Such applications have in the past been shown to be feasible for multivariable systems, provided that there exists a constant feedback gain matrix such that the resulting input-output transfer function is (simply) positive real.

Techniques for High Contrast Imaging in Multi-Star Systems II: Multi-Star Wavefront Control

Direct imaging of exoplanets represents a challenge for astronomical instrumentation due to the high-contrast ratio and small angular separation between the host star and the faint planet. Multi-star systems pose additional challenges for coronagraphic instruments because of the diffraction and aberration leakage introduced by the additional stars, and as a result are not planned to be on direct imaging target lists. Multi-star wavefront control (MSWC) is a technique that uses a coronagraphic instrument's deformable mirror (DM) to create high-contrast regions in the focal plane in the presence of multiple stars. Our previous paper introduced the Super-Nyquist Wavefront Control (SNWC) technique that uses a diffraction grating to enable the DM to generate high-contrast regions beyond the nominal controllable region. These two techniques can be combined to generate high-contrast regions for multi-star systems at any angular separations. As a case study, a high-contrast wavefront control (WC) simulation that applies these techniques shows that the habitable region of the Alpha Centauri system can be imaged reaching 8 times 10(exp -9) mean contrast in 10 percent broadband light in one-sided dark holes from 1.6-5.5 lambda (wavelength) divided by D (distance).

A design procedure and handling quality criteria for lateral directional flight control systems

A practical design procedure for aircraft augmentation systems is described based on quadratic optimal control technology and handling-quality-oriented cost functionals. The procedure is applied to the design of a lateral-directional control system for the F4C aircraft. The design criteria, design procedure, and final control system are validated with a program of formal pilot evaluation experiments.

Stator and Rotor Flux Based Deadbeat Direct Torque Control of Induction Machines

A new, deadbeat type of direct torque control is proposed, analyzed, and experimentally verified in this paper. The control is based on stator and rotor flux as state variables. This choice of state variables allows a graphical representation which is transparent and insightful. The graphical solution shows the effects of realistic considerations such as voltage and current limits. A position and speed sensorless implementation of the control, based on the self-sensing signal injection technique, is also demonstrated experimentally for low speed operation. The paper first develops the new, deadbeat DTC methodology and graphical representation of the new algorithm. It then evaluates feasibility via simulation and experimentally demonstrates performance of the new method with a laboratory prototype including the sensorless methods.

Joint-space Lyapunov-based direct adaptive control of a kinematically redundant telerobot manipulator

This paper presents the design of a joint-space adaptive control scheme for controlling the slave arm motion of a dual-arm telerobot system developed at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to study telerobotic operations in space. Each slave arm of the dual-arm system is a kinematically redundant manipulator with seven degrees of freedom (DOF). Using the concept of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) and Liupunov direct method, we derive an adaptation algorithm that adjusts the PD controller gains of the control scheme. The development of the adaptive control scheme assumes that the slave arm motion is non-compliant and slowly varying. The implementation of the derived control scheme does not require the computation of manipulator dynamics which makes the control scheme sufficiently fast for real-time applications. Computer simulation study performed for the 7-DOF slave arm shows that the developed control scheme can efficiently adapt to sudden change in payload while tracking various test trajectories such as ramp or sinusoids with negligible position errors.

Wind tunnel study of slot spoilers for direct lift control

An investigation was conducted in a 300-mph 7- by 10- foot tunnel to obtain data for a slot spoiler direct lift control system. Slot spoilers are believed to have advantages over flap-type direct lift control (DLC) systems because of the small amount of power required for actuation. These tests, run at a Reynolds number of 1,400,000 showed that up to 78 percent of the lift due to flap deflection could be spoiled by opening several spanwise slots within the flaps. For a given lift change the drag change was significantly less than that which would be obtained by a variable flap DLC system. A nozzle-shaped slot was the most effective of the slot shapes tested.
