Feasibility for identification of wheat in Hill County, Montana

Hill County, Montana was the site chosen for feasibility studies concerning wheat crop identification using ERTS 1 multispectral band scanner data, in which the specific objective was to determine whether wheat is spectrally separable from other crops which are typically grown in wheat producing areas. Available computerized techniques were evaluated for their utility in the investigation. It was found that wheat can be separated from other crops with a classification accuracy of roughly 90 percent or better, and that the best single data set occurs after wheat is fully headed and before it turns yellow. The best overall performance was obtained using the three-pass data set using the best 8 channels, or all 12 channels.

Selenium in soils of the Lower Wasatch Formation, Campbell County, Wyoming: Geochemistry, distribution, and environmental hazards

The author has identified the following significant results. Seleniferous Shingle series soils and sandstone outcrops of section 27, T 48 N, R 71 W, Wyoming are mapped on aerial photography by their association with Astragalus bisulcatus. Chemical leachate analyses and atomic absorption methods reveal all studied Samsil and Shingle soils to contain acid, base, and water soluble selenium compounds, and that water extractions showed varied concentration behavior due to soil pH. Acid-soluble selenium is found to be associated with smectite. Statistical analyses confirm that A. bisulcatus presence has a weak influence on soil-lens organic selenium concentration, and determine the importance of other geobotanical factors for convertor presence. Environmental procedures of high selenium lens burial, convertor plant eradication, and revegetated site monitoring are recommended. Usage of density analysis and photographic enlargement are used to successfully produce both a control area and a Campbell County, Wyoming regional map of A. bisulcatus supportive soils and outcrops using Skylab photography.

Procedure for locating 10 km UTM grid on Alabama County general highway maps

Each county highway map has a geographic grid of degrees and tens of minutes in both longitude and latitude in the margins and within the map as intersection crosses. These will be used to locate the universal transverse mercator (UTM) grid at 10 km intervals. Since the maps used may have stretched or shrunk in height and/or width, interpolation should be done between the 10 min intersections when possible. A table of UTM coordinates of 10 min intersections is required and included. In Alabama, all eastings are referred to a false easting of 500,000 m at 87 deg W longitude (central meridian, CM).

Application of earth resources technology satellite data to urban and regional planning: Test site, County of Los Angeles

The author has identified the following significant results. The County of Los Angeles photointerpreted ERTS film products to define problems of interest, coordinated ground truth over the complex test site including interfaces with secondary users as well as participated in on-line analyses of the GE multispectral information extraction systems. Interactive machine analyses were carried out, developing techniques and procedures as well as evaluating the outputs for community and regional planning. Extensive aircraft underflight coverage was provided that was valuable both in inputs preparation and outputs evaluation of the machine-aided analyses. One of the nonstandard ERTS images led to the discovery of a major new fault lineament on the northern slope of the Santa Monica Mountains.

The rationale for attempting to define salt marsh mosquito-breeding areas in Galveston County by remote sensing the associated vegetation

The rationale for attempting to define salt marsh mosquito breeding areas in Galveston County was discussed, including a botanical survey of the marsh plant communities, their relationship to flooding, and their exposure to salt water. Particular emphasis is given to Distichlis spicata, a widespread marsh grass. Evidence suggests that breeding areas of Aedes sollicitans are associated with Distichlis and that both species respond to similar ecological conditions in the salt marsh. Aspects of the remote sensing of the Distichlis are considered.

Active faults in southeastern Harris County, Texas

Aerial color infrared photography was used to investigate active faults in a complex graben in southeastern Harris County, Tex. The graben extends east-west across an oil field and an interstate highway through Ellington Air Force Base (EAFB), into the Clear Lake oil field and on to LaPorte, Tex. It was shown that the fault pattern at EAFB indicates an appreciable horizontal component associated with the failure of buildings, streets, and runways. Another fault system appears to control the shoreline configuration of Clear Lake, with some of the faults associated with tectonic movements and the production of oil and gas, but many related to extensive ground water withdrawal.

JPL field measurements at the Finney County, Kansas, test site, October 1976: Meteorological variables, surface reflectivity, surface and subsurface temperatures

Data collected at the Finney County, Kansas test site as part of the Joint Soil Moisture Experiment (JSME) are presented here, prior to analysis, to provide all JSME investigators with an immediate source of primary information. The ground-truth measurements were taken to verify and complement soil moisture data taken by microwave and infrared sensors during aircraft overflights. Measurements were made of meteorological variables (air speed, temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall), surface reflectivity, and temperatures at and below the surface.

Flooding of Monroe County, Michigan - A comparison of three remote sensor data sets

During the spring of 1973, three techniques were used to obtain remotely sensed data pertaining to the flooded shoreline of Monroe County, Michigan. Although digitized data from the Earth Resources Technology Satellite were available on magnetic tapes, analysis was based on interpretation methods normally used for aerial photography, since the black and white IR photography and side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) data were available only as images. Using IR photography as the standard, it was found that ERTS-1 Band 7 imagery had a 93% accuracy in detecting areas in the combined category of open water and flooded fields. X(HH) data from SLAR detected that built-up and wet areas were built-up (89 to 100% accuracy), but not that they were wet. It is suggested that these two sensors used in concert from orbital heights could provide information useful to relief organizations in flooded areas. It is considered likely that SLAR data will improve as higher resolution becomes available.

Shielding effects in Norton County and other aubrites

Al-26 (dpm/kg) and/or He, Ne, and Ar have been measured in samples of the Norton County meteorite from three different depths. The gas contents yield a shielding-corrected age of 75.8 + or - 5.7 million years. The ratio of atomic production rates P(Al-26)/P(Ne-21) is 0.22 + or - 0.02. He-3, Ne-21, and Al-26 increase with decreasing Ne-22/Ne-21 at nearly the same rates as they do in the smaller Keyes chondrite. Al-26 contents were measured in Bustee, Khor Temiki, Pesyanoe, and Shallowater meteorites. The ratio of observed to predicted Al-26 content correlates with Ne-22/Ne-21, and comparison with the corresponding chondrite correlation indicates that such aubrites as Malakal may have experienced an unusually high flux of cosmic rays.

Nationwide forestry applications program: Ten-Ecosystem Study (TES) site 5 report, Kershaw County, South Carolina, report 4

The author has identified the following significant results. The Kershaw County site, South Carolina, was selected to be representative of both the oak-pine ecosystem and the southeastern pine ecosystem. The following processing results have concluded that: (1) early spring LANDSAT data provide the best contrast between forest features; (2) level 2 forest features (softwood, hardwood, grassland, and water) can be classified with an accuracy of 70% + or - 5.7% at the 90% confidence level; (3) level 3 species classification was inconclusive; (4) temporal data did not provide a significant increase in classification accuracy of level 2 features, over single date classification to warrant the additional processing; and (5) training fields from only 10% of the site can be used to classify the entire site.

Nuclear track studies of the Pasamonte and Moore County eucrites

The selective annealing technique was applied to samples from the Pasamonte eucrite with a view to obtaining fission track ages of clasts in the meteorite. The method did not permit cosmic ray tracks to be distinguished from fission tracks in either Pasamonte or Moore County. A difference between the fossil track densities observed in an igneous clast and the surrounding host material appears to be due to a pre-irradiation on the Pasamonte parent planet.

Vegetation and other parameters in the Brevard County bar-built estuaries

It is shown that low-altitude aerial photography, using specific interpretive techniques, can effectively delineate sea-grass beds, oyster beds, and other underwater features. Various techniques were used on several sets of aerial imagery. Imagery was tested using several data analysis methods, ground truth, and biological testing. Approximately 45,000 acres of grass beds, 2,500 acres of oyster beds, and 4,200 acres of dredged canals were mapped. This data represents selected sites only. Areas chosen have the highest quality water in Brevard County and are among the most highly recognized biologically productive waters in Florida.

Ten-Ecosystem Study (TES) site 9, Washington County, Missouri

The author has identified the following significant results. Sufficient spectral separability exists among softwood, hardwood, grassland, and water to develop a level 2 classification and inventory. Using the tested automatic data processing technology, softwood and grassland signatures can be extended across the county with acceptable accuracy; with more dense sampling, the hardwood signature probably could also be extended. Fall was found to be the best season for mapping this ecosystem.

Genesis of the cumulate eucrites Serra de Mage and Moore County - A geochemical study

An instrumental neutron activation analysis of element abundances in whole rock and plagioclase separates of the Serra de Mage chondrite has been conducted; plagioclase data and plagioclase mineral/liquid partition coefficients are employed to determine the REE abundances in the derivative equilibrium magmas from which Serra de Mage and Moore County chondrite plagioclases crystallized. No simple genetic relationship between the two chondrites appears likely through the route of fractional crystallization. A difference in degrees of partial melting of a similar source material (different from the source proposed for noncumulate eucrites) could be invoked to relate the two chondrites.
