Method of forming electronically conducting polymers on conducting and nonconducting substrates

The present invention provides electronically conducting polymer films formed from photosensitive formulations of pyrrole and an electron acceptor that have been selectively exposed to UV light, laser light, or electron beams. The formulations may include photoinitiators, flexibilizers, solvents and the like. These solutions can be used in applications including printed circuit boards and through-hole plating and enable direct metallization processes on non-conducting substrates. After forming the conductive polymer patterns, a printed wiring board can be formed by sensitizing the polymer with palladium and electrolytically depositing copper.

High Thermoelectric Performance in PbSe–NaSbSe 2 Alloys from Valence Band Convergence and Low Thermal Conductivity

PbSe is an attractive thermoelectric material due to its favorable electronic structure, high melting point, and lower cost compared to PbTe. Herein, the hitherto unexplored alloys of PbSe with NaSbSe 2 (NaPb m SbSe m+2 ) are described and the most promising p-type PbSe-based thermoelectrics are found among them. Surprisingly, it is observed that below 500 K, NaPb m SbSe m+2 exhibits unorthodox semiconducting-like electrical conductivity, despite possessing degenerate carrier densities of ≈10 20 cm -3 . Here, it is shown that the peculiar behavior derives from carrier scattering by the grain boundaries. It is further demonstrated that the high solubility of NaSbSe 2 in PbSe augments both the thermoelectric properties while maintaining a rock salt structure. Namely, density functional theory calculations and photoemission spectroscopy demonstrate that introduction of NaSbSe 2 lowers the energy separation between the L- and Σ-valence bands and enhances the power factors under 700 K. The crystallographic disorder of Na + , Pb 2+ , and Sb 3+ moreover provides exceptionally strong point defect phonon scattering yielding low lattice thermal conductivities of 1–0.55 W m -1 K -1 between 400 and 873 K without nanostructures. As a consequence, NaPb 10 SbSe 12 achieves maximum ZT ≈1.4 near 900 K when optimally doped. More importantly, NaPb 10 SbSe 12 maintains high ZT across a broad temperature range, giving an estimated record ZT avg of ≈0.64 between 400 and 873 K, a significant improvement over existing p-type PbSe thermoelectrics.

Circularly Polarized Light-Induced Microwave Conductivity Measurement: Rapid Screening Technique of Electronic Conductivity in Chiral Molecular Materials

Here, we developed circularly polarized light-time-resolved microwave conductivity (CPL-TRMC) for investigation of the CPL-dependent photoinduced charge carrier dynamics in chiral materials with chiroptical properties. Chiral R- or S-perylenediimide (PDI) molecular thin films were paired with handedness-sorted (6,5) and (11,-5) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films to compose a donor (D)-acceptor (A) system for the spin-dependent charge separation process, and the D-A system was examined through linear and circular polarization-dependent steady-state and time-resolved measurements. The R-PDI-(6,5) film exhibited strong enhancement in circular dichroism (CD) and revealed a reversed transient conductivity signal, relative to the polarity of CD in CPL-TRMC measurement upon excitation of the E 11 state, which is interpreted as arising from a spin-dependent initial charge separation process. Through linear polarization-dependent flash photolysis TRMC and circular polarization-resolved femtosecond transient absorption, we could deduce that sub-picosecond intertubular charge separation upon E 11 excitation in SWCNT was responsible for the spin-dependent photoconductivity transients observed in CPL-TRMC measurements.

The response of stomatal conductance to seasonal drought in tropical forests

Stomata regulate CO2 uptake for photosynthesis and water loss through transpiration. The approaches used to represent stomatal conductance (gs) in models vary. In particular, current understanding of drivers of the variation in a key parameter in those models, the slope parameter (i.e. a measure of intrinsic plant water-use-efficiency), is still limited, particularly in the tropics. Here we collected diurnal measurements of leaf gas exchange and water potential (?leaf), and a suite of plant traits from the upper canopy of 15 tropical trees in two contrasting Panamanian forests throughout the dry season of the 2016 El Niño. The plant traits included wood density, leaf-mass-per-area (LMA), leaf carboxylation capacity (Vc,max25), leaf water content, the degree of isohydry, and predawn ?leaf. We first investigated how the choice of four commonly used leaf-level gs models with and without the inclusion of ?leaf as an additional predictor variable influence the ability to predict gs, and then explored the abiotic (i.e. month, site-month interaction) and biotic (i.e. tree-species-specific characteristics) drivers of slope parameter variation. Our results show that the inclusion of ?leaf did not improve model performance and that the models that represent the response of gs to vapor pressure deficit performed better than corresponding models that respond to relative humidity. Within each gs model, we found large variation in the slope parameter, and this variation was attributable to the biotic driver, rather than abiotic drivers. We further investigated potential relationships between the slope parameter and the six available plant traits mentioned above, and found that only one trait, LMA, had a significant correlation with the slope parameter (R2=0.66, n=15), highlighting a potential path towards improved model parameterization. This study advances understanding of gs dynamics over seasonal drought, and identifies a practical, trait-based approach to improve modeling of carbon and water exchange in tropical forests.

Sodium, Silver and Lithium-Ion Conducting β''-Alumina + YSZ Composites, Ionic Conductivity and Stability

Na-β''-alumina (Na 2 O.~6Al 2 O 3 ) is known to be an excellent sodium ion conductor in battery and sensor applications. In this study we report fabrication of Na- β''-alumina + YSZ dual phase composite to mitigate moisture and CO 2 corrosion that otherwise can lead to degradation in pure Na-β''-alumina conductor. Subsequently, we heat-treated the samples in molten AgNO 3 and LiNO3 to respectively form Ag-β''-alumina + YSZ and Li-β''-alumina + YSZ to investigate their potential applications in silver- and lithium-ion solid state batteries. Ion exchange fronts were captured via SEM and EDS techniques. Their ionic conductivities were measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Both ion exchange rates and ionic conductivities of these composite ionic conductors were firstly reported here and measured as a function of ion exchange time and temperature.

Enhancing the Conductivity and Thermoelectric Performance of Semicrystalline Conducting Polymers through Controlled Tie Chain Incorporation

Abstract Conjugated polymers are promising materials for thermoelectric applications, however, at present few effective and well‐understood strategies exist to further advance their thermoelectric performance. Here a new model system is reported for a better understanding of the key factors governing their thermoelectric properties: aligned, ribbon‐phase poly[2,5‐bis(3‐dodecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene] (PBTTT) doped by ion‐exchange doping. Using a range of microstructural and spectroscopic methods, the effect of controlled incorporation of tie‐chains between the crystalline domains is studied through blending of high and low molecular weight chains. The tie chains provide efficient transport pathways between crystalline domains and lead to significantly enhanced electrical conductivity of 4810 S cm −1 , which is not accompanied by a reduction in Seebeck coefficient or a large increase in thermal conductivity. Respectable power factors of 173 µW m −1 K −2 are demonstrated in this model system. The approach is generally applicable to a wide range of semicrystalline conjugated polymers and could provide an effective pathway for further enhancing their thermoelectric properties and overcome traditional trade‐offs in optimization of thermoelectric performance.

Superionic Conduction and Interfacial Properties of the Low Temperature Phase Li7P2S8Br0.5I0.5

Sulfide-based solid electrolytes are pursued for their application in bulk-type all-solid-state lithium batteries. Although the usefulness of Li10GeP2S12-type materials have been demonstrated in all-solid-state cathodes, a suitable material with both high ionic conductivity and good interfacial properties with common anode materials is still lacking. In this work, we explore the phase and transport properties of mechanically-milled Li7P2S8Br0.5I0.5, with emphasis on the favorable kinetics at Li metal anode. The low temperature crystalline phase Li7P2S8Br0.5I0.5 (LT-LPSBI) has exceptionally high ionic conductivity of 4.7 mS/cm at room temperature. Moreover, the LT-LPSBI supports long-term Li cycling at 0.5 mA cm-2 with low and stable interfacial resistance (5 O cm2). Transport phenomenon of Li/LT-LPSBI interface and cycling behavior of Li symmetric cells are studied and discussed in detail.

Conducting thermal energy to the membrane/water interface for the enhanced desalination of hypersaline brines using membrane distillation

Membrane distillation (MD) is a membrane-based thermal desalination process capable of treating hypersaline brines. Standard MD systems rely on preheating the feed to drive the desalination process. However, relying on the feed to carry thermal energy is limited by a decline of the thermal driving force as the water moves across the membrane, and temperature polarization. In contrast, supplying heat directly into the feed channel, either through the membrane or other channel surfaces, has the potential of minimizing temperature polarization, increasing single-pass water recoveries, and decreasing the number of heat exchangers in the system. When solar thermal energy can be utilized, particularly if the solar heat is optimally delivered to enhance water evaporation and process performance, MD processes can potentially be improved in terms of energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, or operating costs. Here we describe an MD process using layered composite membranes that include a high-thermal-conductivity layer for supplying heat directly to the membrane-water interface and the flow channel. Here, the MD system showed stable performance with water flux up to 9 L/m 2 /hr, and salt rejection >99.9% over hours of desalinating hypersaline feed (100 g/L NaCl). In addition to bench-scale system, we developed a computational fluid dynamics model that successfully described the transport phenomena in the system.

High-Pressure Behavior of C 2 I 2 and Polymerization to a Conductive Polymer

Crystalline diiodoacetylene (C 2 I 2 ) was synthesized and then examined under high-pressure conditions using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman/infrared spectroscopies, and first-principles calculations. At ~0.3 GPa, the starting tetragonal (P$_{4_{2}}$/n) phase, which is stabilized by donor-acceptor interactions, changes into a new orthorhombic structure (Cmca) that is more densely packed and analogous to the low-temperature phase of acetylene. Above approximately 4 GPa, compressed C 2 I 2 molecules in the Cmca structure begin to polymerize to form a predominantly sp 2 amorphous carbon network that maintains a significant fraction of C-I bonds. Transport measurements demonstrate that the polymeric material is electrically conducting. The magnitude of the electrical conductivity is similar to Br-doped polyacetylene and undoped trans-polyacetylene at 8 GPa and 1 atm, respectively. Elemental analyses performed on recovered samples show that the iodine concentration varies with specific processing conditions. Optimization of the pressure-induced polymerization pathway could allow for enhanced electrical properties to be realized, in addition to postpolymerization functionalization using the weak C-I bonds.

However, the development of optical gas sensing layers that are stable under harsh environmental conditions is an ongoing research challenge. In this work, electronically conducting metal oxide lanthanum-doped strontium titanate (LSTO) films embedded with gold nanoparticles are examined as a sensing layer for application in reducing gas flows at high temperature (600–800 °C). A strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based response to hydrogen is demonstrated in the visible region of the spectrum, while a Drude free electron-based response is observed in the near-IR. Characteristics of these responses are studied both on planar glass substrates and on silica fibers. Charge transfer between the oxide film and the gold nanoparticles is explored as a possible mechanism governing the Au LSPR response and is considered in terms of the corresponding properties of the conducting metal oxide-based matrix phase. Principal component analysis is applied to the combined plasmonic and free-carrier based response over a range of temperatures and hydrogen concentrations. It is demonstrated that the combined visible and near-IR response of these films provides improved versatility for multiwavelength interrogation, as well as improved discrimination of important process parameters (concentration and temperature) through application of multivariate analysis techniques.</span>

Shot noise and differential conductance as signatures of putative topological superconductivity in FeSe 0.45 ⁢Te 0.55

We present a theory for the differential shot noise, dS/dV, as measured via shot-noise scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and the differential conductance, dI/dV, for tunneling into Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in the putative topological superconductor FeSe 0.45 Te 0.55 . We demonstrate that for tunneling into chiral Majorana edge modes near domain walls, as well as MZMs localized in vortex cores and at the end of defect lines, dS/dV vanishes whenever dI/dV reaches a quantized value proportional to the quantum of conductance. Furthermore, these results are independent of the particular orbital tunneling path, thus establishing a vanishing dS/dV concomitant with a quantized dI/dV, as universal signatures for Majorana modes in two-dimensional topological superconductors, irrespective of the material’s specific complex electronic band structure.
