Observation of dimension-crossover of a tunable 1D Dirac fermion in topological semimetal NbSi x Te 2

Condensed matter systems in low dimensions exhibit emergent physics that does not exist in three dimensions. When electrons are confined to one dimension (1D), some significant electronic states appear, such as charge density wave, spin-charge separations, and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) topological state. However, a clear understanding of how the 1D electronic properties connects with topology is currently lacking. Here we systematically investigated the characteristic 1D Dirac fermion electronic structure originated from the metallic NbTe 2 chains on the surface of the composition-tunable layered compound NbSi x Te 2 (x = 0.40 and 0.43) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found the Dirac fermion forms a Dirac nodal line structure protected by the combined $\widetilde {M_y}$ and time-reversal symmetry T and proves the NbSi x Te2 system as a topological semimetal, in consistent with the ab-initio calculations. As x decreases, the interaction between adjacent NbTe 2 chains increases and Dirac fermion goes through a dimension-crossover from 1D to 2D, as evidenced by the variation of its Fermi surface and Fermi velocity across the Brillouin zone in consistence with a Dirac SSH model. Our findings demonstrate a tunable 1D Dirac electron system, which offers a versatile platform for the exploration of intriguing 1D physics and device applications.

Natural top-bottom mass hierarchy in composite Higgs models

We consider composite two-Higgs doublet models based on gauge-Yukawa theories with strongly interacting fermions generating the top-bottom mass hierarchy. The model features a single "universal" Higgs-Yukawa coupling, $g$, which is identified with the top quark $g\equiv g_t \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$. The top-bottom mass hierarchy arises by soft breaking of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry by a condensate of strongly interacting fermions. A mass splitting between vector-like masses of the confined techni-fermions controls this top-bottom mass hierarchy. This mechanism can be present in a variety of models based on vacuum misalignment. For concreteness, we demonstrate it in a composite two-Higgs scheme.

Sub-system quantum dynamics using coupled cluster downfolding techniques

In this paper, we discuss extending the sub-system embedding sub-algebra coupled cluster (SES-CC) formalism and the double unitary coupled cluster (DUCC) ansatz to the time domain. As we demonstrated in earlier studies, it is possible, using these formalisms, to calculate the energy of the entire system as an eigenvalue of downfolded/effective Hamiltonian in the active space, that is identifiable with the sub-system of the composite system. In these studies, we demonstrated that downfolded Hamiltonians integrate out Fermionic degrees of freedom that do not correspond to the physics encapsulated by the active space. We extend these results to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, showing that a similar construct is possible to partition a system into a sub-system that varies slowly in time and a remaining subsystem that corresponds to fast oscillations. This time dependent formalism allows coupled cluster quantum dynamics to be extended to larger systems and for the formulation of novel quantum algorithms based on the quantum Lanczos approach, which have recently been considered in the literature.

Spectroscopic evidence for the direct involvement of local moments in the pairing process of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn 5

The microscopic mechanism for electron pairing in heavy-fermion superconductors remains a major challenge in quantum materials. Some form of magnetic mediation is widely accepted with spin fluctuations as a prime candidate. A novel mechanism, “composite pairing” based on the cooperative two-channel Kondo effect directly involving the f -electron moments, has also been proposed for some heavy-fermion compounds including CeCoIn 5 . The origin of the spin-resonance peak observed in neutron-scattering measurements on CeCoIn 5 is still controversial and the corresponding hump-dip structure in the tunneling conductance is missing. This is in contrast to the cuprate and Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, where both characteristic signatures are observed, indicating spin fluctuations are likely involved in the pairing process. In this study, we report results from planar tunneling spectroscopy along three major crystallographic orientations of CeCoIn 5 over wide ranges of temperature and magnetic field. The pairing gap opens at T p ~ 5 K , well above the bulk T c = 2.3 K , and its directional dependence is consistent with d x 2 – y 2 symmetry. With increasing magnetic field, this pairing gap is suppressed as expected but, intriguingly, a gaplike structure emerges smoothly, increasing linearly up to the highest field applied. This field-induced gaplike feature is only observed below T p . The concomitant appearance of the pairing gap and the field-induced gaplike feature, along with its linear increase with field, indicates that the f -electron local moments are directly involved in the pairing process in CeCoIn 5 .

A theory of dark pions

We present a complete model of a dark QCD sector with light dark pions, broadly motivated by hidden naturalness arguments. The dark quarks couple to the Standard Model via irrelevant Z- and Higgs-portal operators, which encode the low-energy effects of TeV-scale fermions interacting through Yukawa couplings with the Higgs field. The dark pions, depending on their CP properties, behave as either composite axion-like particles (ALPs) mixing with the Z or scalars mixing with the Higgs. The dark pion lifetimes fall naturally in the most interesting region for present and proposed searches for long-lived particles, at the LHC and beyond. This is demonstrated by studying in detail three benchmark scenarios for the symmetries and structure of the theory. Within a coherent framework, we analyze and compare the GeV-scale signatures of flavor-changing meson decays to dark pions, the weak-scale decays of Z and Higgs bosons to hidden hadrons, and the TeV-scale signals of the ultraviolet theory. New constraints are derived from B decays at CMS and from Z-initiated dark showers at LHCb, focusing on the displaced dimuon signature. We also emphasize the strong potential sensitivity of ATLAS and CMS to dark shower signals with large multiplicities and long lifetimes of the dark pions. As a key part of our phenomenological study, we perform a new data-driven calculation of the decays of a light ALP to exclusive hadronic Standard Model final states. The results are provided in a general form, applicable to any model with arbitrary flavor-diagonal couplings of the ALP to fermions.

Composite resonances at a 10 TeV muon collider

We investigate the reach for resonances of the composite Higgs models at a 10 TeV μ + μ – collider with up to 10 ab –1 luminosity. The strong dynamics sector is modeled by the minimal coset SO(5)/SO(4), where vector resonances are in (3, 1) of SO(4) and fermions are in (2, 2). Various production and decay channels are studied. For the spin-1 resonances, the projections are made based on the radiative return and vector boson fusion production channels. The muon collider can cover most of the kinematically allowed mass range and can measure the coupling gρ to percent level. For the fermionic resonances (i.e. the top partners), pair production easily covers the resonance mass below 5 TeV, while single production extends the reach to 6 TeV for a small ξ = 0.015.

Weakly supervised anomaly detection with event-level variables

We introduce a new topology for weakly supervised anomaly detection searches, diobject plus X. In this topology, one looks for a resonance decaying to two standard model particles produced in association with other anomalous event activity (X). This additional activity is used for classification. We demonstrate how anomaly detection techniques which have been developed for dijet searches focusing on jet substructure anomalies can be applied to event-level anomaly detection in this topology. To robustly capture event-level features of multiparticle kinematics, we employ new physically motivated variables derived from the geometric structure of a collision’s phase space manifold. As a proof of concept, we explore the application of this approach to several benchmark signals in the di-𝜏 and di-𝜇 plus X final states. We demonstrate that our anomaly detection approach can reach discovery-level significances for signals that would be missed in a conventional bump-hunt approach.

Bilocal Field Theory for Composite Scalar Bosons

We give a bilocal field theory description of a composite scalar with an extended binding potential that reduces to the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the pointlike limit. This provides a description of the internal dynamics of the bound state and features a static internal wave function, $\phi(\vec{r})$, in the center-of-mass frame that satisfies a Schrödinger–Klein–Gordon equation with eigenvalues m 2 . We analyze the “coloron” model (single perturbative massive gluon exchange) which yields a UV completion of the NJL model. This has a BCS-like enhancement of its interaction, ∝N c the number of colors, and is classically critical with g critical remarkably close to the NJL quantum critical coupling. Negative eigenvalues for m 2 lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the Yukawa coupling of the bound state to constituent fermions is emergent.

Sterile neutrinos, black hole vacuum and holographic principle

We construct an effective field theory (EFT) model that describes matter field interactions with Schwarzschild mini-black-holes (SBH’s), treated as a scalar field, B 0 (x). Fermion interactions with SBH’s require a complex spurion field, θ ij , which we interpret as the EFT description of “holographic information,” which is correlated with the SBH as a composite system. We consider Hawking’s virtual black hole vacuum (VBH) as a Higgs phase, $\langle$B 0 $\rangle$=V. Integrating sterile neutrino loops, the information field θij is promoted to a dynamical field, necessarily developing a tachyonic instability and acquiring a VEV of order the Planck scale. For N sterile neutrinos this breaks the vacuum to SU(N) × U(1)/SO(N) with N degenerate Majorana masses, and 12N(N+1) Nambu-Goldstone neutrino-Majorons. The model suggests many scalars fields, corresponding to all fermion bilinears, may exist bound nonperturbatively by gravity.

Review on crystal structures and magnetic properties of RTX 3 materials

The structural and compositional diversity of the RTX 3 family of materials offers various magnetic and thermodynamic properties such as complex magnetic structure, vibronic bound states, heavy-fermions, valence fluctuations, metamagnetism, spin glass behavior, quantum criticality, and unconventional superconductivity. In this study we present an overview of the crystal structures, crystal growth and magnetic properties of RTX 3 compounds as well as a discussion of the relevant physics. The magnetic properties of several compounds of the RTX 3 family still remain unexplored. The compounds with a complex magnetic structure could potentially host exotic topological phases. This review article may help explore exotic magnetic properties such as the vibron state and topological spin textures.

Hyperstealth dark matter and long-lived particles

A new dark matter candidate is proposed that arises as the lightest baryon from a confining 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(𝑁) gauge theory which equilibrates with the Standard Model only through electroweak interactions. Surprisingly, this candidate can be as light as a few GeV. The lower bound arises from the intersection of two competing requirements: (i) the equilibration sector of the model must be sufficiently heavy, at least several TeV, to avoid bounds from colliders, and (ii) the lightest dark meson (that may be the dark 𝜂′, 𝜎, or the lightest glueball) has suppressed interactions with the SM and must decay before big bang nucleosynthesis. The low-energy dark sector consists of one flavor that is electrically neutral and an almost electroweak singlet. The dark matter candidate is the lightest baryon consisting of 𝑁 of these light flavors leading to a highly suppressed elastic scattering rate with the Standard Model (SM). The equilibration sector consists of vectorlike dark quarks that transform under the electroweak group, ensuring that the dark sector can reach thermal equilibrium with the SM in the early Universe. The lightest dark meson lifetimes vary between 10 −3 ≲ 𝑐⁢𝜏 ≲ 10 7 m, providing an outstanding target for LHC production and experimental detection. We delineate the interplay between the lifetime of the light mesons, the suppressed direct detection cross section of the lightest baryon, and the scale of equilibration sector that can be probed at the LHC.

Quantum Aspects of Natural Top Quark Condensation

In top quark condensation the Brout-Englert-Higgs (BEH) boson is a $\bar{t}t$ bound state. With a UV completion of a single coloron exchange interaction, a recent semiclassical treatment gave a novel theory of the BEH boson as an extended object with composite scale $M_0\sim 6$ TeV. Presently we obtain the semiclassical theory as an effective action, using the source/Legendre transformation techniques of Jackiw, \etal, and fermion loop effects in the large-$N_c$ limit by deploying an auxiliary field to implement the sum of leading fermion loop diagrams. The theory remains natural at the loop level, with fine tuning at the level of a few %, and the effective coupling of the 4-fermion interaction, $\bar{g}_0^2$, is significantly enhanced by quantum loops over the fundamental coloron coupling, $g_0^2$. Hence a relatively weaker ``topcolor'' theory can produce critical coupling in the effective BEH bound state theory.

High-quality composite Pati-Salam axion

We present a composite QCD axion model where the Peccei-Quinn symmetry emerges as a high-quality, accidental symmetry. The axion potential is only modified by eight-fermion, dimension-12 operators, which if present at the Planck scale, allow for axion dark matter from misalignment while solving the strong 𝐶⁢𝑃 problem. The model is an SU⁡(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theory with ten flavors where the Pati-Salam unified subgroup SO⁡(6) × SO⁡(4) ⊂ SU⁢(10)𝐿 and Sp⁡(10) ⊂ SU⁢(10) 𝑅 are weakly gauged. The dynamics breaks SU⁢(10) 𝐿 × SU⁢(10) 𝑅 → SU⁢(10) 𝑉 and the weakly gauged groups to U⁡(3) × U⁡(2) ⊃ SU⁢(3) 𝑐 × SU⁢(2) 𝐿 × U⁡(1) 𝑌 , with the QCD axion identified as one of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. This axion has a relatively large coupling to photons while a residual $\bar{𝜃}$ eff may be just below the current limit on the neutron electric dipole moment. If the dimension-12 operators are present near the grand unified theory scale, they can cause domain wall networks to decay, allowing for axion dark matter even for the postinflationary scenario.

Coupled Cluster Downfolding Theory: towards universal many-body algorithms for dimensionality reduction of composite quantum systems in chemistry and materials science

Abstract The recently introduced coupled cluster (CC) downfolding techniques for reducing the dimensionality of quantum many-body problems recast the CC formalism in the form of the renormalization procedure allowing, for the construction of effective (or downfolded) Hamiltonians in small-dimensionality sub-space, usually identified with the so-called active space, of the entire Hilbert space. The resulting downfolded Hamiltonians integrate out the external (out-of-active-space) Fermionic degrees of freedom from the internal (in-the-active-space) parameters of the wave function, which can be determined as components of the eigenvectors of the downfolded Hamiltonians in the active space. This paper will discuss the extension of non-Hermitian (associated with standard CC formulations) and Hermitian (associated with the unitary CC approaches) downfolding formulations to composite quantum systems commonly encountered in materials science and chemistry. The non-Hermitian formulation can provide a platform for developing local CC approaches, while the Hermitian one can serve as an ideal foundation for developing various quantum computing applications based on the limited quantum resources. We also discuss the algorithm for extracting the semi-analytical form of the inter-electron interactions in the active spaces.
