Dual-Image Color Normalization to Enable High-Performance Concentrating Solar Optical Metrology

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) requires precision mirrors, and these in turn require metrology systems to measure their optical slope. In this project we studied a color-based approach to the correspondence problem, which is the association of points on an optical target with their corresponding points seen in a reflection. This is a core problem in deflectometry-based metrology, and a color solution would enable important new capabilities. We modeled color as a vector in the [R,G,B] space measured by a digital camera, and explored a dual-image approach to compensate for inevitable changes in illumination color. Through a series of experiments including color target design and dual-image setups both indoors and outdoors, we collected reference/measurement image pairs for a variety of configurations and light conditions. We then analyzed the resulting image pairs by selecting example [R,G,B] pixels in the reference image, and seeking matching [R,G,B] pixels in the measurement image. Modulating a tolerance threshold enabled us to assess both match reliability and match ambiguity, and for some configurations, orthorectification enabled us to assess match accuracy. Using direct-direct imaging, we demonstrated color correspondence achieving average match accuracy values of 0.004 h, where h is the height of the color pattern. We found that wide-area two-dimensional and linear one-dimensional color targets outperformed hybrid linear/lateral gradient targets in the cases studied. Introducing a mirror degraded performance under our current techniques, and we did not have time to evaluate whether matches could be reliably achieved despite varying light conditions. Nonetheless, our results thus far are promising.

Cloud Atlas: An Interactive Apparatus for Air Quality Awareness

This paper introduces a research project of a kinetic apparatus that translates collected air quality data to users. The kinetic mechanical skeleton is embedded with processors and electronics, and constantly changes its form according to air quality data collected online via a web crawler. By translating invisible environmental conditions, such as air quality data into morphological, colorful, and acoustic changes for the device, the participants can be aware of the phenomenon of air pollution in real time. The interac- tions between participants' movements and the changes of the device imply how human behaviors can affect the state of the atmosphere. As a result, the device evokes public awareness and participation in environmental issues through tangible experiences. This research aims to explore a new kind of responsive architecture that acts as a medium between invisible environments and inhabitants.

Magnet-in-ferroelectric crystals exhibiting photomultiferroicity

Growing crystallographically incommensurate and dissimilar organic materials is fundamentally intriguing but challenging for the prominent cross-correlation phenomenon enabling unique magnetic, electronic, and optical functionalities. Here, we report the growth of molecular layered magnet-in-ferroelectric crystals, demonstrating photomanipulation of interfacial ferroic coupling. The heterocrystals exhibit striking photomagnetization and magnetoelectricity, resulting in photomultiferroic coupling and complete change of their color while inheriting ferroelectricity and magnetism from the parent phases. Under a light illumination, ferromagnetic resonance shifts of 910 Oe are observed in heterocrystals while showing a magnetization change of 0.015 emu/g. In addition, a noticeable magnetization change (8% of magnetization at a 1,000 Oe external field) in the vicinity of ferro-to-paraelectric transition is observed. The mechanistic electric-field-dependent studies suggest the photoinduced ferroelectric field effect responsible for the tailoring of photo-piezo-magnetism. The crystallographic analyses further evidence the lattice coupling of a magnet-in-ferroelectric heterocrystal system.

Cover Feature: Rational Design of a Uranyl Metal–Organic Framework for the Capture and Colorimetric Detection of Organic Dyes (Chem. Eur. J. 61/2020)

A new uranyl containing metal–organic framework was prepared and the diffraction data reveals the structure consists of interpenetrating 3D nets with a 4,3-connected tbo topology. Furthermore, each net contains large 22.8 Å pores and is constructed from monomeric, hexagonal bipyramidal uranyl nodes that are joined by 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene ligands. The crystalline material is stable in aqueous media and due to the large void space (constituting 76% of the unit cell by volume) can sequester organic dyes, the uptake of which induces a visible change to the color of the material.

Tamper-Indicating Enclosures with Visually Obvious Tamper Response

Sandia National Laboratories is developing a way to visualize molecular changes that indicate penetration of a tamper-indicating enclosure (TIE). Such "bleeding" materials (analogous to visually obvious, colorful bruised skin that doesn't heal) allows inspectors to use simple visual observation to readily recognize that penetration into a material used as a TIE has been attempted, without providing adversaries the ability to repair damage. Such a material can significantly enhance the current capability for TIEs, used to support treaty verification regimes. Current approaches rely on time-consuming and subjective visual assessment by an inspector, external equipment, such as eddy current or camera devices, or active approaches that may be limited due to application environment. The complexity of securing whole volumes includes: (1) enclosures that are non-standard in size/shape; (2) enclosures that may be inspectorate- or facility-owned; (3) tamper attempts that are detectable but difficult or timely for an inspector to locate; (4) the requirement for solutions that are robust regarding reliability and environment (including facility handling); and (5) the need for solutions that prevent adversaries from repairing penetrations. The approach is based on a transition metal ion solution within a microsphere changing color irreversibly when the microsphere is ruptured. Investigators examine 3D printing of the microspheres as well as the spray coating formulation. The anticipated benefits of this work are passive, flexible, scalable, cost-effective TIEs with obvious and robust responses to tamper attempts. This results in more efficient and effective monitoring, as inspectors will require little or no additional equipment and will be able to detect tamper without extensive time-consuming visual examination. Applications can include custom TIEs (cabinets or equipment enclosures), spray-coating onto facility-owned items, spray-coating of walls or structures, spray-coatings of circuit boards, and 3D-printed seal bodies. The paper describes research to-date on the sensor compounds and microspheres.

Effect of amine type on acidic toxic gas adsorption at ambient conditions on modified CuBTC

We report two amine-modified copper-based Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF (CuBTC)) of different surface chemical and textural features were synthesized and used as adsorbents of acidic toxic gases (NO 2 and H 2 S) in both moist (71% relative humidity (R.H.)) and dry conditions. The initial and exhausted samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The addition of melamine prevented full growth of CuBTC crystals and resulted in amorphous-like particles with sizes less than 200 nm. The material was non-porous with a small surface area. When urea was used as an amine source, the resulting particles maintained the overall octahedral shape of the parent CuBTC MOF and the material was more porous than the parent MOF. While the urea-modified CuBTC sample performed well as an NO 2 adsorbent in the presence of moisture, the reactivity of the melamine-modified sample and its physical properties provided a favorable environment for the removal of H 2 S. The incorporation of amines into the MOF structure also resulted in surface defects /open copper sites that favored the removal of toxic gases in dry conditions. The reactivity of the adsorbents with toxic gases was demonstrated by the changes in the adsorbent colors, in texture, and in surface chemistry (organic salts, complexes, sulfides and nitrates were formed).

Psychrometric Chart v1.0.0

Psychart is a graphical program developed for NERSC for accurately monitoring air conditions for the air cooled HPC equipment. Psychart will live directly in the OMNI system as a Grafana plugin. It employs the use of Psychrolib and the Grafana Starter Panel to create a front-end program that plots the state of the environmental air on a psychrometric chart. It is highly customizable, allowing the user to modify graph bounds, optionally show ASHRAE data center comfort regions, change the series point color, and more. What sets Psychart apart from other existing psychrometric charts is its ability to plot in real-time. Other psychrometric charts that can be found online require manual input of data and do not seamlessly integrate with Grafana.

Actualizing Change after Experiencing Significant Mathematics PD: Hearing from Teachers of Color about Their Practice and Mathematical Identities

While it is well-documented that students of color and students from low-income communities have often been denied access to a challenging education in mathematics in the United States, less is known about how teachers of color have overcome their deprived educational backgrounds to become teachers of mathematics who implement inquiry-based instructional methods as a means to improve their students’ learning and mathematical identities. In this article, we use a sociopolitical theoretical framework to examine how seven elementary school teachers of color characterized their experiences as mathematics students, themselves as teachers of mathematics, and their mathematical identities after experiencing significant professional development in mathematics. All the participants in this study had experienced extensive professional development support in mathematics over a sustained period of time. We demonstrate through the teachers’ narratives that, given the deprived mathematics education that the majority of the participants experienced as PK-12 students, having opportunities to participate in significant and focused PD in mathematics over a sustained period transformed how teachers viewed themselves as teachers and positively impacted their mathematical identities.

CONGO²: Scalable Online Anomaly Detection and Localization in Power Electronics Networks

Rapid and accurate detection and localization of electronic disturbances simultaneously are important for preventing its potential damages and determining potential remedies. Existing anomaly detection methods are severely limited by the low accuracy, the expensive computational cost and the need for highly trained personnel. There is an urgent need for a scalable online algorithm for in-field analysis of large-scale power electronics networks. Here in this paper, we propose a fast and accurate algorithm for anomaly detection and localization of power electronics networks: stratified colored-node graph (CONGO2). This algorithm hierarchically models the change of correlated waveforms and then correlated sensors using the colored-node graph. By aggregating the change of each sensor with its neighbors’ inputs, we can spontaneously identify and localize the anomaly that cannot be detected by data collected from a single sensor. As our proposed method only focuses on the changes within a short time frame, it is highly computational efficient and only needs small data storage. Thus, our method is ideal for online and reliable anomaly detection and localization of large-scale power electronic networks. Compared to existing anomaly detection methods, our method is entirely data-driven without training data, highly accurate and reliable for wide-spectrum anomalies detection, and more importantly, capable of both detection and localization. Thus, it is ideal for infield deployment for large-scale power electronic networks. As illustrated by a distributed energy resources (DERs) power grid with 37-node, our method can effectively detect and localize various cyber and physical attacks.

Characteristics and radiolysis behavior of polyvinylchloride under accelerated proton and γ-irradiation

Here the effect of high energy protons and γ-irradiation on the structural properties, surface-energies, and toxicological properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were studied due to the role PVC products play in many technologies including the nuclear industry. Accelerated 1–4 MeV protons impacting on PVC in vacuum lead to the formation of polyenyl radicals as shown by EPR and to an increase in free surface energy due to functionalization of the surface of the irradiated polymer. γ-irradiation leads to the formation of unsaturated bonds, carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as shown by IR and to the release of HCl. Correlated molecular orbital theory calculations of reaction thermodynamics were used to aid in the development of a mechanism in the absence of oxygen. The formation and accumulation of chromophores and auxochromic groups during γ-radiolysis of PVC leads to a gradual change of the initial white color of the polymer to yellow and then to brown and black with high sensitivity. A mixture of powdered PVC and silicate glue was used to determine the profile of a 60 Co γ-radiation beam on targets with a complex relief. γ-irradiated polymer does not have a local irritating effect due to a single application to the skin of mice in an adhesive mixture at a concentration of up to 5000 mg/kg. γ-radiolysis of PVC powder in air with a dose of up to 1400 kGy does not affect its acute toxicity when administered intragastrically to BDF1 mice. PVC and its γ-irradiated analogs are non-toxic at doses ≤5000 mg/kg.

Anatomy of Continuous Mars SEIS and Pressure Data from Unsupervised Learning

The seismic noise recorded by the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport (InSight) seismometer (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure [SEIS]) has a strong daily quasi-periodicity and numerous transient microevents, associated mostly with an active Martian environment with wind bursts, pressure drops, in addition to thermally induced lander and instrument cracks. That noise is far from the Earth’s microseismic noise. Quantifying the importance of nonstochasticity and identifying these microevents is mandatory for improving continuous data quality and noise analysis techniques, including autocorrelation. Cataloging these events has so far been made with specific algorithms and operator’s visual inspection. We investigate here the continuous data with an unsupervised deep-learning approach built on a deep scattering network. This leads to the successful detection and clustering of these microevents as well as better determination of daily cycles associated with changes in the intensity and color of the background noise. We first provide a description of our approach, and then present the learned clusters followed by a study of their origin and associated physical phenomena. We show that the clustering is robust over several Martian days, showing distinct types of glitches that repeat at a rate of several tens per sol with stable time differences. We show that the clustering and detection efficiency for pressure drops and glitches is comparable to or better than manual or targeted detection techniques proposed to date, noticeably with an unsupervised approach. Finally, here we discuss the origin of other clusters found, especially glitch sequences with stable time offsets that might generate artifacts in autocorrelation analyses. We conclude with presenting the potential of unsupervised learning for long-term space mission operations, in particular, for geophysical and environmental observatories.

Physical Characterization of Interstellar Comet 2I/2019 Q4 (Borisov)

We present a study of interstellar comet 2I/2019 Q4 (Borisov) using both preperihelion and postperihelion observations spanning late September 2019 through late January 2020. The intrinsic brightness of the comet was observed to continuously decline throughout the timespan, likely due to the decreasing effective scattering cross-section as a result of volatile sublimation with a slope of −0.43 ± 0.02 km{sup 2} d{sup −1}. We witnessed no significant change in the slightly reddish color of the comet, with mean values of 〈g−r〉=0.68±0.04, 〈r−i〉=0.23±0.03, and the normalized reflectivity gradient across the g and i bands (S{sup ′})-bar (g,i)=(10.6±1.4)% per 10{sup 3} Å, all unremarkable in the context of solar system comets. Using the available astrometric observations, we confidently detect the nongravitational acceleration of the comet following a shallow heliocentric distance dependence of r{sub H}{sup −1±1}. Accordingly, we estimate that the nucleus is most likely ≲0.4 km in radius, and that a fraction of ≳0.2% of the total mass of the nucleus has been eroded due to the sublimation activity since the earliest observation of the comet in 2018 December by the time of perihelion. Our morphology simulation suggests that the dust ejection speed increased from ∼4 m s{sup −1} in 2019 September to ∼7 m s{sup −1} around perihelion for the optically dominant dust grains with β∼0.01, and that the observable dust grains are no smaller than micron size.

Visualizing Assembly Dynamics of All‐Liquid 3D Architectures

Abstract To better exploit all‐liquid 3D architectures, it is essential to understand dynamic processes that occur during printing one liquid in a second immiscible liquid. Here, the interfacial assembly and transition of 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(4‐sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (H 6 TPPS) over time provides an opportunity to monitor the interfacial behavior of nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) during all‐liquid printing. The formation of J‐aggregates of H 4 TPPS 2− at the interface and the interfacial conversion of the J‐aggregates of H 4 TPPS 2− to H‐aggregates of H 2 TPPS 4− is demonstrated by interfacial rheology and in situ atomic force microscopy. Equally important are the chromogenic changes that are characteristic of the state of aggregation, where J‐aggregates are green in color and H‐aggregates are red in color. In all‐liquid 3D printed structures, the conversion in the aggregate state with time is reflected in a spatially varying change in the color, providing a simple, direct means of assessing the aggregation state of the molecules and the mechanical properties of the assemblies, linking a macroscopic observable (color) to mechanical properties.

Chromophore carbonyl twisting in fluorescent biosensors encodes direct readout of protein conformations with multicolor switching

Fluorescent labeling of proteins is a powerful tool for probing structure-function relationships with many biosensing applications. Structure-based rules for systematically designing fluorescent biosensors require understanding ligand-mediated fluorescent response mechanisms which can be challenging to establish. We installed thiol-reactive derivatives of the naphthalene-based fluorophore Prodan into bacterial periplasmic glucose-binding proteins. Glucose binding elicited paired color exchanges in the excited and ground states of these conjugates. X-ray structures and mutagenesis studies established that glucose-mediated color switching arises from steric interactions that couple protein conformational changes to twisting of the Prodan carbonyl relative to its naphthalene plane. Mutations of residues contacting the carbonyl can optimize color switching by altering fluorophore conformational equilibria in the apo and glucose-bound proteins. A commonly accepted view is that Prodan derivatives report on protein conformations via solvatochromic effects due to changes in the dielectric of their local environment. Here we show that instead Prodan carbonyl twisting controls color switching. These insights enable structure-based biosensor design by coupling ligand-mediated protein conformational changes to internal chromophore twists through specific steric interactions between fluorophore and protein.

Puck Loop Seal (Final Project Technical Report)

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is advancing technical capabilities used in passive loop seals. The “Puck” seal used a set of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) requirements for new passive loop seals published in 2020 as a design guide. The seal is based on an oxygen-sensitive inner mixture encased in an oxygen-impermeable shell, is monolithic rather than two-part, incorporates self-capturing wire features, contains colored water beads and bubbles formed during processing as unique identifiers (UIDs), and visually indicates tamper (whether from seal body penetration or from seal wire removal) by irreversibly changing the seal body from multi-colored to black. This paper will provide details on the design, development, and testing of Puck seal prototypes.

Autonomously Responsive Membranes for Chemical Warfare Protection

Stimuli-responsive materials offer new opportunities to resolve long-standing material challenges and are rapidly gaining pivotal roles in diverse applications. For example, smart protective garments that rapidly transport water vapor and autonomously block chemical threats are expected to enable an effective new paradigm of adaptive personal protection. However, the incorporation of these seemingly incompatible properties into a single responsive system remains elusive. Herein, a bistable membrane that can rapidly, selectively, and reversibly transition from a highly breathable state in a safe environment to a chemically protective state when exposed to organophosphate threats such as sarin is demonstrated. Dynamic response to chemical stimuli is achieved through the physical collapse of an ultrathin copolymer layer on the membrane surface, which efficiently gates transport through membrane pores composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The adoption of nanometer-wide SWNTs for ultrafast moisture conduction enables a simultaneous boost in size-sieving selectivity and water-vapor permeability by decreasing nanotube diameter, thereby overcoming the breathability/protection trade-off that limits conventional membrane materials. Adaptive multifunctional membranes based on this platform greatly extend the active use of a protective garment and present exciting opportunities in many other areas including separation processes, sensing, and smart delivery.

Observable signatures of initial state momentum anisotropies in nuclear collisions

In this work, we show that the correlation between the elliptic momentum anisotropy v 2 and the average transverse momentum [ p T ] at fixed multiplicity in small system nuclear collisions carries information on the origin of the observed momentum anisotropy. A calculation using a hybrid IP-Glasma+ music +UrQMD model that includes contributions from final state response to the initial geometry as well as initial state momentum anisotropies of the color glass condensate predicts a characteristic sign change of the correlator ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) as a function of charged particle multiplicity in p + Au and d + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV , and p + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV . This sign change is absent in calculations without initial state momentum anisotropies. The model further predicts a qualitative difference between the centrality dependence of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in Au + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV and Pb + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV , with only the latter showing a sign change in peripheral events. Predictions for O + O collisions at different collision energy show a similar behavior. Experimental observation of these distinct qualitative features of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in small and large systems would constitute strong evidence for the presence and importance of initial state momentum anisotropies predicted by the color glass condensate effective theory.
