Dual Functional Ni3S2@Ni Core-Shell Nanoparticles Decorating Nanoporous Carbon as Cathode Scaffolds for Lithium-Sulfur Battery with Lean Electrolytes

Lithium-sulfur batteries are very promising for next-generation energy storage. However, most studies use flooded electrolytes to achieve a high specific capacity at the expense of lowering the specific energy. Understanding lithium-sulfur battery performance with lean electrolytes is highly desirable. Herein, a modified Pechini method is developed to synthesize a nanoporous carbon host decorated with Ni3S2@Ni particles. Such a cathode delivers enhanced specific capacities with extended cycling life in lean electrolytes, due to the dual functions of the Ni3S2 shell, which can both facilitate reaction kinetics and promote electrolyte wetting. This work highlights a strategy to rationally design cathodes for highenergy lithium-sulfur batteries.

Bioresorbable Primary Battery Anodes Built on Core–Double-Shell Zinc Microparticle Networks

Bioresorbable implantable electronics require power sources that are also bioresorbable with controllable electrical output and lifetime. In this paper, we report a bioresorbable zinc primary battery anode filament based on a zinc microparticle (MP) network coated with chitosan and Al 2 O 3 double shells. When discharged in 0.9% NaCl saline, a Zn MP filament with a 0.17 × 2 mm 2 cross-sectional area exhibited a stable voltage output of 0.55 V at a current of 0.01 mA. Covered by chitosan and Al 2 O 3 double shells, the zinc MP filament exhibited a directional dissolution behavior with a tunable lifetime approximately linear to its length. A stable 200 h discharging time was achieved with a 15 mm Zn MP filament. The maximum output power was found to be 12 μW at 0.03 mA for one filament. The linearity relationship between the current output and the filament cross-sectional area suggested a facile strategy to raise the power output at constant discharging voltage. The filaments could also be connected in series and in parallel to boost its overall voltage and current output, demonstrating their excellent integration capability. Furthermore, this work presents a promising pathway toward bioresorbable transient batteries with controllable lifetime and power output, demonstrating a great potential for powering transient implantable biomedical devices.

Massive Quiescent Cores in Orion - The Core Mass Function

CMF studies to date have been largely restricted to low-mass star-forming regions. The present study focuses on a HIGH MASS star forming region, ORION, but observes positions sufficiently far from KL that effects of previously-formed massive stars are not overwhelming

Template-Assisted, Seed-Mediated Synthesis of Hierarchically Mesoporous Core–Shell UiO-66: Enhancing Adsorption Capacity and Catalytic Activity through Iterative Growth

A hierarchically mesoporous (HM) UiO-66-F 4 shell with ~8 nm mesopores can be iteratively grown on top of UiO-66 nanoparticle (NP) seeds over several cycles templated by Pluronic F-127 micelles. Presumably, the Pluronic micelles that were formed in water can surround UiO-66 NPs to facilitate the overgrowth of an HM-UiO-66-F 4 shell in the presence of Zr IV precursors and BDC-F 4 linkers. The UiO-66 NP seeds play an important role in directing the continuous growth of the HM-UiO-66-F 4 shell, as only a nonporous phase was obtained in their absence. Furthermore, this template-assisted, seed-mediated method can be extended to produce other UiO-66-X (X = (OH) 2 , (COOH) 2 , etc.) shells, demonstrating its generality for the UiO-66 family of metal–organic frameworks. Notably, the incorporation of mesopores into the thrice-overgrown UiO-66@HM|3rd-UiO-66-F 4 materials leads to impressive enhancements in the per-mass uptake capacity of Direct Blue 86, a large anionic dye: 320% better than the parent UiO-66 seeds and 150% better than that for a [UiO-66 + UiO-66-F 4 ] physical mixture at the same mass proportion. Similar enhancements were also observed in the catalyzed oxidation of thioanisole.

Parallel simulated annealing with embedded machine learning and multifidelity models for reactor core design

This paper presents extensions to a penalty-free, parallel simulated annealing (SA) algorithm for multi-constrained combinatorial optimization with the aim of embedding multi-fidelity physics models into the annealing procedure. The method uses a low-fidelity, quickly executing model for rapid design space exploration and a high-fidelity model for detailed constraint resolution and on-the-fly bias correction. Machine learning models updated within the annealing procedure were used to bridge the gap between the multi-fidelity models, which led to accurate rapid exploration and efficient detailed constraint resolution. A software implementation of the new multi-fidelity optimization methods, called ML-PSA, was demonstrated on a continuous multi-fidelity optimization problem and a constrained combinatorial PWR lattice design problem. These problems demonstrate some of the features, parallel performance characteristics, and extensible nature of the multi-fidelity SA methods. This paper shows that the developed software and procedure are a general optimization tool that can be applied to a wide variety of scientific and engineering design optimization applications.
