Advanced spectroscopic studies of (PPh 4 ) 2 [Co(N 3 ) 4 ], a field-induced single-ion magnet

The high-spin Co II complex (PPh 4 ) 2 [Co(N 3 ) 4 ] (Co-N 3 )has been investigated using advanced spectroscopic techniques [far-IR magneto-spectroscopy (FIRMS), high-frequency and high-field EPR (HFEPR), and inelastic neutron scattering (INS)] to study its zero-field-splitting (ZFS), giving spin-Hamiltonian (SH) parameters. The analysis of multi-frequency HFEPR reveals the easy-axis anisotropy with a D value of −10.39(5) cm −1 and a rhombic ratio (E/D) of 0.21(1). The magnetic properties have also been probed by direct-current (DC) magnetometry, suggesting minor differences in anisotropy from the previously reported polymorph (Co-N 3 ′). Ligand-field theory (LFT) analysis indicates that the structures of Co-N 3 and Co-N 3 ′ are closer to D 2d symmetry than other symmetries considered. Alternate-current (AC) susceptibility reveals slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field, indicating that Co-N 3 is a field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM). Here, while both Co-N 3 and Co-N 3 ′ were studied by DC magnetometry, one unusual aspect of the current work on Co-N 3 is that advanced spectroscopies HFEPR, FIRMS, and INS were used to directly observe transitions between ZFS split states, giving accurate SH parameters.

Breaking Scaling Relationships in CO 2 Electroreduction with Isoelectronic Analogs [Fe 4 N(CO) 12 ] – and [Fe 3 MnO(CO) 12 ] –

[Fe 4 N(CO) 12 ] – and [Fe 3 MnO(CO) 12 ] – have the same total electron count and overall charge, as well as similar reduction potentials of –1.21 and –1.17 V vs SCE in MeCN, respectively. Both clusters form the reduced hydride upon single electron transfer (ET) and proton transfer (PT). It is known that [Fe 4 N(CO) 12 ] – is an electrocatalyst for selective CO 2 reduction to formate at –1.2 V vs SCE in either pH 7 buffered water or in MeCN/H 2 O (95:5) and an effective electrocatalyst for H + reduction to H 2 under N 2 under the same conditions. In contrast, [Fe 3 MnO(CO) 12 ] – affords no products upon electrolysis, beyond [H-Fe 3 MnO(CO) 12 ] – . Herein, we determine that [H-Fe 3 MnO(CO) 12 ] – is a weaker hydride donor than [H-Fe 4 N(CO) 12 ] – by about 4 kcal mol –1 , and this is a breaking of the hydricity versus reduction potential scaling relationship previously established for a series of metal carbonyl clusters electrocatalysts.

Molecular Fe-N 4 Moieties Coupled with Atomic Co-N 4 Sites Toward Improved Oxygen Reduction Performance

Research on high-efficiency and cost-efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is still a vital but challenging issue for commercializing metal–air batteries. Herein, a single-molecule/atom hybrid catalyst is developed to boost the ORR, in which iron phthalocyanine molecules containing molecular Fe-N 4 moieties couple with atomic Co-N 4 sites on the surface of polyhedral carbon. Density functional theory calculations reveal that face-to-face laminated construction of Fe-N 4 and Co-N 4 in the hybrid catalyst can effectively modulate the electronic structure of active iron atoms and reduce the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for ORR. As a result, this hybrid catalyst demonstrates excellent ORR performance, featuring a half-wave potential of 0.904 V, a peak power density of 238.3 mW cm -2 for zinc–air battery, and outstanding electrocatalytic stability. Here, this work offers a distinctive and robust molecular/atomic engineering approach to creating efficient electrocatalysts, advancing the fields of metal–air batteries.

Insight into Acetic Acid Synthesis from the Reaction of CH 4 and CO 2

The reaction of CH 4 and CO 2 to produce acetic acid is an atom-efficient way for using carbon resources and for mitigating CO 2 emissions. This article provides a critical assessment of the progress in this catalytic reaction from the perspective of identifying and constructing the active sites. We elucidate how Cu- and Zn-based catalysts with different structures are used for the activation of CH 4 and CO 2 . The differences in the metal oxidation state may affect the adsorption of CH 4 and CO 2 and consequently change the activation barriers for the dissociation of the C–H bond of CH 4 and the C–C coupling reaction. We discuss how the active sites and transition states can be modified by the location of metal sites, the framework environment, and the promotion effect of different acid sites. Additionally, we also compare different technologies, including catalyst pretreatment, preactivation with CO 2 , tandem reaction, and plasma-driven catalysis for the CH 4 and CO 2 conversion. We conclude by identifying opportunities for improving the efficiency of heterogeneous catalysts for this important reaction.

Local structure analysis of low-temperature neutron pair distribution function coupled with molecular dynamics simulations of CH 4 and CO 2 hydrates from 2 to 210 K

CH 4 hydrates occur naturally and are an abundant potential fuel source with a corresponding risk of potent greenhouse gas release, due to their stability conditions at low temperature and high pressure. Byproduct CO 2 can be exchanged with CH 4 in these natural deposits and can potentially stabilize the hydrates at higher temperatures. CH 4 , CO 2 , and mixed CH 4 -CO 2 hydrates are studied with in situ neutron pair distribution function experiments from 2 to 210 K to investigate the impact of varying the CH 4 -CO 2 guest composition in the gas hydrate structure. These experiments combined with Reverse Monte Carlo analysis allow for the characterization of intermolecular CH 4 and CO 2 interactions with the water molecules which form the hydrate lattice and how they impact the local structure of the lattice itself. Results indicate that when CH 4 and CO 2 co-occupy the hydrate, the host is more strongly distorted than in the pure CH 4 and CO 2 hydrates, but this becomes less defined with increasing temperature. The presence of CO 2 in mixed hydrate increases the stability range and creates a barrier for CH 4 to completely leave the structure.
