Quaternary borocarbides: New class of intermetallic superconductors

Our recent discovery of superconductivity (SC) in the four-element multiphase Y-Ni-B-C system at an elevated temperature (TC approximately 12 K) has opened up great possibilities of identifying new superconducting materials and generating new physics. Superconductivity with Tc (greater than 20 K) higher than that known so far in bulk intermetallics has been observed in multiphase Y-Pd-B-C and Th-Pd-B-C systems and a family of single phase materials RENi2B2C (RE= Y, rare earth) have been found. Our investigations show YNi2B2C to be a strong coupling hard type-II SC. HC2(T) exhibits an unconventional temperature dependence. Specific heat and magnetization studies reveal coexistence of SC and magnetism in RNi2B2C (R = Ho, Er, Tm) with magnetic ordering temperatures (Tc approximately 8 K, 10.5 K, 11 K and Tm approximately 5 K, approximately 7K, approximately 4 K respectively) that are remarkably higher than those in known magnetic superconductors . Mu-SR studies suggest the possibility of Ni atoms carrying a moment in TmNi2B2C. Resistivity results suggests a double re-entrant transition (SC-normal-SC) in HoNi2B2C. RENi2B2C (RE = Ce, Nd, Gd) do not show SC down to 4.2 K. The Nd- and Gd-compounds order magnetically at approximately 4.5 K and approximately 19.5 K, respectively. Two SC transitions are observed in Y-Pd-B-C (Tc approximately 22 K, approximately 10 K) and in Th-Pd-B-C (Tc approximately 20 K, approximately 14 K) systems, which indicate that there are at least two structures which support SC in these borocarbides. In our multiphase ThNi2B2C we observe SC at approximately 6 K. No SC was seen in multiphase UNi2B2C, UPd2B2C, UOs2Ge2C and UPd5B3C(0.35) down to 4.2 K. Tc in YNi2B2C is depressed by substitutions (Gd, Th and U at Y-sites and Fe, Co at Ni-sites).

A mechanism for a class of solar coronal disturbances

A new ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model is used to examine the dynamical response of the upper solar atmosphere to the injection of cold mass from the photosphere, a surge perturbation. Theoretical results show that mass ejections from the photosphere will form loop structures with internally-moving plasma blobs, which is due to the mass injections from both legs in active regions leading to a reflection of waves at the top of the loop. The mass-loaded loop will remain as long as ejection continues, and will excite MHD waves propagating outward to the upper atmosphere, which may trigger a class of coronal disturbances.

Hard X-ray spectra of neutron stars and black hole candidates

The hard X-ray behavior of several X-ray binary systems containing a neutron star or a black hole candidate is analyzed in an attempt to determine the specific signature of these categories of compact objects. Limiting the consideration to two subclasses of neutron stars, Atoll sources and non-pulsating Z sources, it appears that only the Atoll sources have a spectral behavior similar to black holes. It is proposed that Atoll sources are weakly magnetized neutron stars, whereas Z sources are small radius moderate magnetized neutron stars. Large magnetic fields funnel the accreting matter, thus preventing spherical accretion and free fall if the neutron star radius is smaller than the last stable accreting orbit. Weak magnetic fields do not have this effect, and blackbody soft photons from the stellar surface are upscattered on the relativistic infalling matter, leading to excess hard X-rays. This excess is visible in two of the observed Atoll sources and in the spectrum of a black hole candidate. In the case of a Z source, a lack of photons was remarked, providing a possible signature to distinguish between these classes of objects.

Effect of Metal Alloys, Degradation Inhibitors, Temperatures on Thermal Oxidative Stability of CF3O(CF2O)(sub x)(CF2O)(sub y)CF3 Fluids

Degradation-promoting action of a series of ferrous and titanium alloys on CF3O(CF2O)(sub x)(CF2-CF2O)(sub y)CF3-based Z25 fluids and the inhibition effectiveness of several classes of additives were investigated. Four types of additives-phosphines, phosphates, phospha-s-triazines, and diphosphatetraazacyclooctatetraene-were studied in two batches of Z25 fluid, P28 and P151. In the absence of inhibitors, titanium alloys were more detrimental than the ferrous metals, but the additives were more effective in the presence of titanium alloys. Phosphate esters totally inhibited the decomposition of P151 at 330 C over 24 h in both types of alloys. The other additives were effective at lower temperatures. The responsiveness of fluid to an additive was found to be batch dependent.

Controlling magnetostructural transition and magnetocaloric effect in multi-component transition-metal-based materials

Proper coupling between structural and magnetic transitions is critical for the emergence and control of magnetocaloric effects in solids. We examine the influence of minor substitutional doping (replacing Mn by Cr and Al by Sn) and interstitial doping with B on the magnetic, structural, and magnetocaloric properties of recently discovered Mn 0.5 Fe 0.5 NiSi 0.94 Al 0.06 alloy exhibiting a giant magnetocaloric effect near room temperature. We demonstrate that magnetocaloric properties of the base compound can be controlled and, in some cases, improved by chemical substitutions. First-principles computations elucidate how small changes in the composition affect properties in this family of compounds and, thus, provide useful guidance for the selection of suitable doping elements for such materials. Here the magnetic-field-induced entropy change measured for Mn 0.5 Fe 0.5 NiSi 0.94 Al 0.06 B 0.005 is –22 J/kg K near room temperature for the applied magnetic field of 2 T, and it is among the highest known values for this class of materials.

Design and evaluation of a failure detection and isolation algorithm for restructurable control systems

The use of a decentralized approach to failure detection and isolation for use in restructurable control systems is examined. This work has produced: (1) A method for evaluating fundamental limits to FDI performance; (2) Application using flight recorded data; (3) A working control element FDI system with maximal sensitivity to critical control element failures; (4) Extensive testing on realistic simulations; and (5) A detailed design methodology involving parameter optimization (with respect to model uncertainties) and sensitivity analyses. This project has concentrated on detection and isolation of generic control element failures since these failures frequently lead to emergency conditions and since knowledge of remaining control authority is essential for control system redesign. The failures are generic in the sense that no temporal failure signature information was assumed. Thus, various forms of functional failures are treated in a unified fashion. Such a treatment results in a robust FDI system (i.e., one that covers all failure modes) but sacrifices some performance when detailed failure signature information is known, useful, and employed properly. It was assumed throughout that all sensors are validated (i.e., contain only in-spec errors) and that only the first failure of a single control element needs to be detected and isolated. The FDI system which has been developed will handle a class of multiple failures.

Coherent photoproduction of ρ0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{{\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Cross sections for the coherent photoproduction of ρ0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{{\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV are reported. The measurements, which rely on the π+π− decay channel, are presented in three regions of rapidity covering the range |y| < 0.8. For each rapidity interval, cross sections are shown for different nuclear-breakup classes defined according to the presence of neutrons measured in the zero-degree calorimeters. The results are compared with predictions based on different models of nuclear shadowing. Finally, the observation of a coherently produced resonance-like structure with a mass around 1.7 GeV/c2 and a width of about 140 MeV/c2 is reported and compared with similar observations from other experiments.

Uncovering a chirally suppressed mechanism of oνββ decay with LHC searches

Δ L = 2 lepton number violation (LNV) at the TeV scale could provide an alternative interpretation of positive signal(s) in future neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay experiments. An interesting class of models from this point of view are those that at low energies give rise to dimension-9 vector operators and a dimension-7 operator, both of whose 0 νββ -decay rates are “chirally suppressed”. We study and compare the sensitivities of 0 νββ -decay experiments and LHC searches to a simplified model in this class of TeV-scale LNV that is also SU(2) L × U(1) Y gauge invariant. The searches for 0 νββ decay, which are here diluted by a chiral suppression of the vector operators, are found to be less constraining than LHC searches whose reach is increased by the assumed kinematic accessibility of the mediator particles. For the chirally suppressed dimension-7 operator generated by TeV-scale mediators, in contrast, 0 νββ -decay searches place strong constraints on the size of the new Yukawa coupling. Signals of this model at the LHC and 0 νββ -decay experiments are entirely uncorrelated with the observed neutrinos masses, as these new sources of LNV give negligible contributions to the latter. We find the prospects for the high-luminosity LHC and ton-scale 0 νββ -decay experiments to uncover the chirally-suppressed mechanism with TeV-scale LNV to be promising. We also comment on the sensitivity of the 0 νββ -decay lifetime to certain unknown low-energy constants that in the case of dimension-9 scalar operators are expected to be large due to non-perturbative renormalization.

Growth and characterization of large (Y,La)TiO 3 and (Y,Ca)TiO 3 single crystals

The Mott-insulating rare-earth titanates ( R TiO 3 , with R being a rare-earth ion) are an important class of materials that encompasses interesting spin-orbital phases as well as ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and insulator-metal transitions. The growth of these materials has been plagued by difficulties related to overoxidation, which arises from a strong tendency of Ti 3 + to oxidize to Ti 4 + . We describe our efforts to grow sizable single crystals of YTiO 3 , Y 1 - x La x TiO 3 ( x ≤ 0.25 ), and Y 1 - y Ca y TiO 3 ( y ≤ 0.35 ) with the optical traveling-solvent floating-zone technique. Finally, we present sample characterization via chemical composition analysis, magnetometry, charge transport, neutron scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to understand macroscopic physical property variations associated with overoxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a good signal-to-noise ratio in inelastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements of spin-wave excitations. A superconducting impurity phase, found to appear in Ca-doped samples at high doping levels, is identified as TiO.

Anisotropic flow of identified hadrons in $\mathrm{X}$e-$\mathrm{X}$e collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 $\mathrm{T}$e$\mathrm{V}$

Measurements of elliptic (v 2 ) and triangular (v 3 ) flow coefficients of π ± , K ± , $p+\bar{p}$, $K$$^{0}_{S}$, and $Λ+\bar{Λ}$ obtained with the scalar product method in Xe-Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV are presented. The results are obtained in the rapidity range |y| < 0.5 and reported as a function of transverse momentum, p T , for several collision centrality classes. The flow coefficients exhibit a particle mass dependence for p T < 3 GeV/c, while a grouping according to particle type (i.e., meson and baryon) is found at intermediate transverse momenta (3 < p T < 8 GeV/c). The magnitude of the baryon v 2 is larger than that of mesons up to p T = 6 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of the shape evolution of the p T -differential v 2 is studied for the various hadron species. The v 2 coefficients of π ± , K ± , and $p+\bar{p}$ are reproduced by MUSIC hydrodynamic calculations coupled to a hadronic cascade model (UrQMD) for p T < 1 GeV/c. A comparison with v n measurements in the corresponding centrality intervals in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV yields an enhanced v 2 in central collisions and diminished value in semicentral collisions.

Automatic classification of reforested Pinus SPP and Eucalyptus SPP in Mogi-Guacu, SP, Brazil, using LANDSAT data

The author has identified the following significant results. Single date LANDSAT CCTs were processed, by Image-100 to classify Pinus and Eucalyptus species and their age groups. The study area Mogi-Guagu was located in the humid subtropical climate zone of Sao Paulo. The study was divided into ten preliminary classes and featured selection algorithms were used to calculate Bhattacharyya distance between all possible pairs of these classes in the four available channels. Classes having B-distance values less than 1.30 were grouped in four classes: (1) class PE - P. elliottii, (2) class P0 - Pinus species other than P. elliotii, (3) class EY - Eucalyptus spp. under two years, and (4) class E0 - Eucalyptus spp. more than two years old. The percentages of correct classification ranged from 70.9% to 94.12%. Comparisons of acreage estimated from the Image-100 with ground truth data showed agreement. The Image-100 percent recognition values for the above four classes were 91.62%, 87.80%, 89.89%, and 103.30%, respectively.

cymyc: $\underline{C}$alabi-$\underline{Y}$au $\underline{M}$etrics, $\underline{Y}$ukawas, and $\underline{C}$urvature

We introduce cymyc, a high-performance Python library for numerical investigation of the geometry of a large class of string compactification manifolds and their associated moduli spaces. We develop a well-defined geometric ansatz to numerically model tensor fields of arbitrary degree on a large class of Calabi-Yau manifolds. cymyc includes a machine learning component which incorporates this ansatz to model tensor fields of interest on these spaces by finding an approximate solution to the system of partial differential equations they should satisfy.

Real-time discovery of AT2020xnd: a fast, luminous ultraviolet transient with minimal radioactive ejecta

ABSTRACT The many unusual properties of the enigmatic AT2018cow suggested that at least some subset of the empirical class of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) represents a genuinely new astrophysical phenomenon. Unfortunately, the intrinsic rarity and fleeting nature of these events have made it difficult to identify additional examples early enough to acquire the observations necessary to constrain theoretical models. We present here the Zwicky Transient Facility discovery of AT2020xnd (ZTF20acigmel, the ‘Camel’) at z = 0.243, the first unambiguous AT2018cow analogue to be found and confirmed in real time. AT2018cow and AT2020xnd share all key observational properties: a fast optical rise, sustained high photospheric temperature, absence of a second peak attributable to ejection of a radioactively heated stellar envelope, extremely luminous radio, millimetre, and X-ray emission, and a dwarf-galaxy host. This supports the argument that AT2018cow-like events represent a distinct phenomenon from slower-evolving radio-quiet supernovae, likely requiring a different progenitor or a different central engine. The sample properties of the four known members of this class to date disfavour tidal disruption models but are consistent with the alternative model of an accretion powered jet following the direct collapse of a massive star to a black hole. Contextual filtering of alert streams combined with rapid photometric verification using multiband imaging provides an efficient way to identify future members of this class, even at high redshift.
