Cepheid companions? FM Aquilae, FN Aquilae, RX Aurigae, Y Lacertae, and RS Orionis

IUE spectra have been used to search for companions of FN Aql and RX Aur, two classical Cepheids which have been tentatively identified as binary stars on the basis of cyclic variations in their pulsation periods. Three other Cepheids, FM Aql, Y Lac, and RS Ori, suspected of having blue companions from the (U-B), (B-V) diagram, have also been investigated. There is no indication of a companion of FM Aql, FN Aql, and RX Aur. If these stars have companions, they must be at least as cool as A0 V, Al V, and A1 V, respectively.

An empirical test for the metallicity sensitivity of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation

The results are reported of the first observational test of the sensitivity of the zero point of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation to metal abundance. BVRI time-averaged observations of Cepheids in three radially separated and chemically different fields in M31 are used to find mean reddenings and true distance moduli that differ by only 0.25 mag. Consistent distances are found for all three fields. The large observed differences in the apparent moduli can be totally attributed to different mean extinctions among the three fields.

Baade-Wesselink radii for NGC 1866 Cepheids

Radial velocities and CCD photometry suitable for a Baade-Wesselink analysis are now available for six short-period Cepheids (HV12198, HV12199, HV12202, HV12203, HV12204, and V4) in the LMC cluster NGC 1866. As a prerequisite for such an analysis, O-C diagrams have been constructed and examined for seven of the NGC 1866 Cepheids (HV12197, HV12198, HV12199, HV12200, HV12202, HV12203, and HV12204), yielding improved periods and estimates of the rate of period change in these coeval variables. One star, HV12198, shows possible evidence for period change, but the phase mismatch due to that change is small enough to have negligible effect on its Baade-Wesselink radius. The computed radii are in good agreement with the Baade-Wesselink, theoretical and cluster/association period-radius relations of Fernie (1984) and the Galactic relation of Coulson and Caldwell (1989). The Flower (1977) color-effective temperature relation and the Becker et al. (1977) mass-luminosity relation lead to mean masses of 4.9 + or - 0.5 solar masses and 4.6 + or - 0.5 solar masses for the respective metallicities of (Y,Z) = (0.0273,0.0016) and (0.026,0.02). Pulsation constants are also computed for these stars.

Classical Cepheid luminosities from binary companions

Luminosities for the classical Cepheids Eta Aql, W Sgr, and SU Cas are determined from IUE spectra of their binary companions. Spectral types of the companions are determined from the spectra by comparison with the spectra of standard stars. The absolute magnitude inferred from these spectral types is used to determine the absolute magnitude of the Cepheid, either directly or from the magnitude difference between the two stars. For the temperature range of the companions (A0 V), distinctions of a quarter of a spectral subclass can be made in the comparison between the companions and standard stars. The absolute magnitudes for Eta Aql and W Sgr agree well with the period-luminosity-color relation of Feast and Walker (1987). Random errors are estimated to be 0.3 mag. SU Cas, however, is overluminous for pulsation in the fundamental mode, implying that it is pulsating in an overtone.

New calibrators for the Cepheid period-luminosity relation

IUE spectra of six Cepheids have been used to determine their absolute magnitudes from the spectral types of their binary companions. The stars observed are U Aql, V659 Cen, Y Lac, S Nor, V350 Sgr, and V636 Sco. The absolute magnitude for V659 Cen is more uncertain than for the others because its reddening is poorly determined and the spectral type is hotter than those of the others. In addition, a reddening law with extra absorption in the 2200 A region is necessary, although this has a negligible effect on the absolute magnitude. For the other Cepheids, and also Eta Aql and W Sgr, the standard deviation from the Feast and Walker period-luminosity-color (PLC) relation is 0.37 mag, confirming the previously estimated internal uncertainty. The absolute magnitudes for S Nor from the binary companion and from cluster membership are very similar. The preliminary PLC zero point is less than 2 sigma (+0.21 mag) different from that of Feast and Walker. The same narrowing of the instability strip at low luminosities found by Fernie is seen.

The binary Cepheid BP Cir - A test of evolutionary tracks

IUE spectra of the system containing the Cepheid BP Cir are used to derive the magnitude difference between the two stars (Delta V = 1.88 +/- 0.3 mag) and the spectral type of the companion (B6.0V). This is the first system yet encountered for which the standard Seaton reddening law is inappropriate. For BP Cir, a stronger 2200-A bump than the standard law is required. However, this does not affect the determination of the temperature of the hot star or the magnitude difference between the two stars, because those use the wavelength regions shorter than 1600 A and longer than 2500 A. The stars are very similar in mass. Possible pulsation in the first overtone mode implies that BP Cir B is evolved beyond the ZAMS but is still in the main sequence band. The best match to BP Cir A and B is with isochrones by Stothers and Chin (1991) with Inglesias and Rogers (1991) opacities and no core convective overshoot and Cepheid pulsation in the first overtone.

New Cepheid distances to nearby galaxies based on BVRI CCD photometry. III - NGC 300

A true distance modulus of (m - M) sub 0 = 26.66 +/- 0.10 mag (corresponding to 2.1 +/- 0.1 Mpc) has been determined for the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 300. New CCD data have been obtained for a sample of known Cepheids in this galaxy from which apparent distance moduli at B, V, R, and I wavelengths are determined. Combining the data available at different wavelenghts, and assuming a true distance modulus to the LMC of 18.5 mag, a true distance modulus is obtained for NGC 300, corrected for the effects of interstellar reddening. The availability of a new distance to NGC 300 brings to five the total number of galaxies with new CCD photometry of Cepheids, useful for calibration of the Hubble constant.

The Mass of the Classical Cepheid S Mus

This program was to obtain a FUSE satellite spectrum of the classical Cepheid S Mus. The aim was to determine the temperature of the hot companion. Combining this with orbital velocity data, the mass of the Cepheid can be obtained. The spectrum was obtained in spring, 2002. Preliminary reductions have been done, which confirm the results from the lower resolution Voyager spectrum. Final reductions are in progress.

The Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project VIII. The Discovery of Cepheids and a New Distance to NGC 3621 Using the Hubble Space Telescope

We report on the discovery of Cepheids in the field spiral galaxy NGC3621, based on observations made with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 3621 is one of 18 galaxies observed as part of the HST Key Project on the Extragalctic Distance Scale, which aims to measure the Hubble Constant to 10 percent accuracy.
