Integrating CCSDS Electronic Data Sheets into Flight Software

This presentation will describe the new CCSDS Spacecraft Onboard Interfaces Services (SOIS) Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) standards and how they are being applied to data interfaces in software frameworks, tool chains, and ground systems across a range of missions at NASA and other agencies.

The New CCSDS Standard for Low-Complexity Lossless and Near-Lossless Multispectral and Hyperspectral Image Compression

This paper describes the emerging Issue 2 of the CCSDS-123.0-B standard for low-complexity compression of multispectral and hyperspectral imagery, focusing on its new features and capabilities. Most significantly, this new issue incorporates a closed-loop quantization scheme to provide near-lossless compression capability while still supporting lossless compression, and introduces a new entropy coding option that provides better compression of low-entropy data.

The Use of the CCSDS Unified Space Data Link Protocol on All Space Links

NASA is actively pursuing the development of data link layer protocols for the human space program with the added intent of infusing the key capabilities of efficient space link security, support for inter-networking, and compatible operational modes with Optical Communications. There seems to be two divergent technical approaches on how to provide these capabilities: one associated with the use of a fixed length Protocol Data Unit (PDU) i.e., a fixed length transfer frame, and the other advocating the use of a variable length transfer frame. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the pros and cons of these two approaches within the context of existing Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Space Data Link Protocols and Channel Coding Recommendations for all space links: space to ground (return) link, ground to space (forward) link and space to space (proximity) links.

Benefits and Challenges of CCSDS File Delivery Protocol as Applied to Europa Clipper

—This paper describes the use of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) File Delivery Protocol (CFDP) on the Europa Clipper mission for both uplink and downlink of files. It includes an overview of CFDP, the history of why CFDP was chosen, how it benefits mission operations, some of the mission scenarios that stress CFDP, operability aspects, the best practices that Clipper adopted from other missions and some of the technical challenges with implementation, and verification and validation. The benefits to mission operations accrue because CFDP reduces the need for manual management of file transfer, including retransmission of missing data, and deletion of files only after confirmation of receipt by the ground. The challenges occur because CFDP is a round-trip protocol – it requires messages in both directions to complete a file transfer, and because it uses timers to ensure that control messages are resent if needed to prevent transactions from going stale. Any situations where communication is restricted to a single direction, interrupted, reordered, or backlogged can pose a challenge. There are also implementation challenges. Europa Clipper is the first mission at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to adopt class 2, fully acknowledged, CFDP for both uplink and downlink. The implementation needed new software, requirements and operational procedures. The experience of the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) with CFDP from their previous missions was crucial to success for Europa Clipper. Because CFDP relies on timers and messages travel in both directions, verification and validation (V&V) requires new approaches. For certain scenarios, a live ground system talking to a live flight system with realistic simulated one-way light times, data rates and data outages must be used.

CCSDS SLE Service Management: Real-World Use Cases

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how the standard SLE-SM services can be applied to the operations of current TT&C providers. It begins with a brief overview of the scope and operating environment of the SLE-SM services, then describes several use cases in which SLE-SM services can be applied to existing operational situations. The paper also addresses how SLE-SM services can be adopted in an evolutionary fashion. The paper concludes with a brief identification of additions to SLE-SM that are under consideration to make SLE-SM applicable to an even broader range of network operations concepts, policies, and procedures.

Bandwidth efficient CCSDS coding standard proposals

The basic concatenated coding system for the space telemetry channel consists of a Reed-Solomon (RS) outer code, a symbol interleaver/deinterleaver, and a bandwidth efficient trellis inner code. A block diagram of this configuration is shown. The system may operate with or without the outer code and interleaver. In this recommendation, the outer code remains the (255,223) RS code over GF(2 exp 8) with an error correcting capability of t = 16 eight bit symbols. This code's excellent performance and the existence of fast, cost effective, decoders justify its continued use. The purpose of the interleaver/deinterleaver is to distribute burst errors out of the inner decoder over multiple codewords of the outer code. This utilizes the error correcting capability of the outer code more efficiently and reduces the probability of an RS decoder failure. Since the space telemetry channel is not considered bursty, the required interleaving depth is primarily a function of the inner decoding method. A diagram of an interleaver with depth 4 that is compatible with the (255,223) RS code is shown. Specific interleaver requirements are discussed after the inner code recommendations.

SEU hardened memory cells for a CCSDS Reed-Solomon encoder

A design technique to harden CMOS memory circuits against single event upset (SEU) in the space environment is reported. The design technique provides a recovery mechanism which is independent of the shape of the upsetting event. A RAM cell and flip-flop design are presented to demonstrate the method. The flip-flop was used in the control circuitry for a Reed-Solomon encoder designed for the Space Station and Explorer platforms.
