Breaking covalent bonds in the context of the many-body expansion (MBE). I. The purported “first row anomaly” in XH n (X = C, Si, Ge, Sn; n = 1–4)

We present a new, novel implementation of the Many-Body Expansion (MBE) to account for the breaking of covalent bonds, thus extending the range of applications from its previous popular usage in the breaking of hydrogen bonds in clusters to molecules. A central concept of the new implementation is the in situ atomic electronic state of an atom in a molecule that casts the one-body term as the energy required to promote it to that state from its ground state. The rest of the terms correspond to the individual diatomic, triatomic, etc., fragments. Its application to the atomization energies of the XH n series, X = C, Si, Ge, Sn and n = 1–4, suggests that the (negative, stabilizing) 2-B is by far the largest term in the MBE with the higher order terms oscillating between positive and negative values and decreasing dramatically in size with increasing rank of the expansion. The analysis offers an alternative explanation for the purported “first row anomaly” in the incremental H n–1 X–H bond energies seen when these energies are evaluated with respect to the lowest energy among the states of the XH n molecules. Due to the “flipping” of the ground/first excited state between CH 2 ( 3 B 1 ground state, 1 A 1 first excited state) and XH 2 , X = Si, Ge, Sn ( 1 A 1 ground state, 3 B 1 first excited state), the overall picture does not exhibit a “first row anomaly” when the incremental bond energies are evaluated with respect to the molecular states having the same in situ atomic states.

Ultra-low magnetization and hysteresis loss in APC Nb 3 Sn superconductors

For the accelerator magnets of the next hadron collider, reducing superconductor persistent-current magnetization is not only important for achieving the desired field quality, but also crucial for its sustainability because the magnetization loss is the major heat load to the magnet cold mass. For conventional Nb 3 Sn conductors this requires reduction of effective subelement size (D eff ). For the restacked-rod-process (RRP ® ) conductors a physical subelement size (D sub ) as small as 35 µm (corresponding to a D eff close to 45 µm) can be reached, but at a significant price in J c . Another way to reduce the magnetization is by introducing artificial pinning centers (APC) using the internal oxidation approach. APC conductors outperform conventional Nb 3 Sn wires in two aspects: 1) higher J c at high fields, and 2) much lower J c and magnetization at low fields (e.g. below 5 T). Here, in this work we explored the fabricability of APC wires with small D sub . A 180-stack APC wire was produced and drawn to 0.7- and 0.5 mm diameters with good quality, with D sub s of 34 and 24 µm (D eff s of 36 and 25 µm), respectively. For the 34 µm-D sub wire, its non-Cu J c is higher than that of an RRP ® wire used for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project above 13 T (e.g. 36% higher at 4.2 K, 18 T), while its non-Cu magnetization at 1 T, ΔM(1 T), is only 29% of the RRP ® wire. Its non-Cu hysteresis loss for a cycle between 1 and 14 T, Q h (1–14 T), is 37% of the RRP ® wire. For the 24 µm-D sub wire, its non-Cu J c surpasses the HL-LHC RRP ® wire above 17.5 T, while its ΔM(1 T) and Q h (1–14 T) are only 17% and 23% of the RRP® wire, respectively. Its non-Cu Q h (±3 T) even meets the specification of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project.

Signature splitting of the g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in Ba 131 and Ce 133

Excited states in Ba 131 and Ce 133 were studied using in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy through the Sn 122 ( C 13 , 4 n ) Ba 131 and Te 125 ( C 12 , 4 n ) Ce 133 reactions, respectively. A strongly coupled band, associated with the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + configuration, was identified in Ba 131 and Ce 133 . It is the first time to observe the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the N = 75 isotones. The signature partners exhibit considerable energy splitting in comparison with those in the π g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the odd- A Ta and Re isotopes. Here, extensive cranked shell model and quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations reveal the origin of the signature splitting, which depends not only on the triaxiality, but also on the configuration mixing with nearby low- j orbitals.

Doubly-Charged Negative Ions as Novel Tunable Catalysts: Graphene and Fullerene Molecules Versus Atomic Metals

The fundamental mechanism underlying negative-ion catalysis involves bond-strength breaking in the transition state (TS). Doubly-charged atomic/molecular anions are proposed as novel dynamic tunable catalysts, as demonstrated in water oxidation into peroxide. Density Functional Theory TS calculations have found a tunable energy activation barrier reduction ranging from 0.030 eV to 2.070 eV, with Si 2– , Pu 2– , Pa 2– and Sn 2– being the best catalysts; the radioactive elements usher in new application opportunities. C 60 2– significantly reduces the standard C 60 – TS energy barrier, while graphene increases it, behaving like cationic systems. According to their reaction barrier reduction efficiency, variation across charge states and systems, rank-ordered catalysts reveal their tunable and wide applications, ranging from water purification to biocompatible antiviral and antibacterial sanitation systems.

Growth and characterization of α-Sn thin films on In- and Sb-rich reconstructions of InSb(001)

α-Sn thin films can exhibit a variety of topologically nontrivial phases. Both studying the transitions between these phases and making use of these phases in eventual applications requires good control over the electronic and structural quality of α-Sn thin films. α-Sn growth on InSb often results in out-diffusion of indium, a p-type dopant. By growing α-Sn via molecular beam epitaxy on the Sb-rich c(4×4) surface reconstruction of InSb(001) rather than the In-rich c(8×2), we demonstrate a route to substantially decrease and minimize this indium incorporation. The reduction in indium concentration allows for the study of the surface and bulk Dirac nodes in α-Sn via angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy without the common approaches of bulk doping or surface dosing, simplifying topological phase identification. In this study, the lack of indium incorporation is verified in angle-resolved and angle-integrated ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy as well as in clear changes in the Hall response.

Effect of starting powder characteristics on density, microstructure and low temperature oxidation behavior of a Si3N48w/o Y2O3 ceramic

The densification and oxidation behavior of Si3N4 - 8w/oY2O3 prepared from three commercial starting powders were studied. Bars of SN 402, SN 502, and CP 85/15 were sintered for 3 to 4.5 hours at 1750 C. A second set was hot pressed for 2 hours at 1750 C. The microstructures were studied by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, densities were determined, and the phase compositions were determined by X-ray diffraction. Densification and microstructure were greatly influenced by the starting powder morphology and impurity content. Although SN 402 exhibited the maximum weight lose, the highest sintered and hot pressed densities were obtained with this powder. All powders had both equiaxed and elongated grains. Sintered bars were composed of beta silicon nitride and n-melelite. In contrast, hot pressed bars contained beta silicon nitride, H-phase, and J-phase, but no melelite. Yttria distribution in sintered bars was related to the presence of cation impurities such as Ca, Fe, and Mg. A limited oxidation study at 750 C in air showed no instability in these Si3N4 - 8 w/oY2O3 specimens, regardless of startin powder.

Mechanistic Advantages of Organotin Molecular EUV Photoresists

Here, extreme ultraviolet (EUV)-induced radiation exposure chemistry in organotin-oxo systems, represented by the archetypal [(R-Sn) 12 O 14 (OH) 6 ](A) 2 cage, has been investigated with density functional theory. Upholding existing experimental evidence of Sn-C cleavage-dominant chemistry, computations have revealed that either electron attachment or ionization can single-handedly trigger tin-carbon bond cleavage, partially explaining the current EUV sensitivity advantage of metal oxide systems. We have revealed that tin atoms at different parts of the molecule react differently to ionization and electron attachment and have identified such selectivity as a result of local coordination chemistry instead of the macro geometry of the molecule. An ionization-deprotonation pathway has also been identified to explain the observed evolution of an anion conjugate acid upon exposure and anion mass dependence in resist sensitivity.
