Predicting 1 H NMR relaxation in Gd 3+ -aqua using molecular dynamics simulations

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are used to predict 1 H NMR T 1 relaxation of water from paramagnetic Gd 3+ ions in solution at 25 °C. Simulations of the T 1 relaxivity dispersion function r 1 computed from the Gd 3+ – 1 H dipole–dipole autocorrelation function agree within ≃8% of measurements in the range f 0 ≃ 5 ↔ 500 MHz, without any adjustable parameters in the interpretation of the simulations, and without any relaxation models. Here the simulation results are discussed in the context of the Solomon-Bloembergen-Morgan inner-sphere relaxation model, and the Hwang-Freed outer-sphere relaxation model. Below f 0 ≲ 5 MHz, the simulation overestimates r 1 compared to measurements, which is used to estimate the zero-field electron-spin relaxation time. The simulations show potential for predicting r 1 at high frequencies in chelated Gd 3+ contrast-agents used for clinical MRI.

Ductility mechanisms in complex concentrated refractory alloys from atomistic fracture simulations

The striking variation in damage tolerance among refractory complex concentrated alloys is examined through the analysis of atomistic fracture simulations, contrasting behavior in elemental Nb with that in brittle NbMoTaW and ductile Nb45Ta25Ti15Hf15. We employ machine-learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs), including a new MLIP developed for NbTaTiHf, in atomistic simulations of crack tip extension mechanisms based on analyses of atomistic fracture resistance curves. While the initial behavior of sharp cracks shows good correspondence with the Rice theory, fracture resistance curves reveal marked changes in fracture modes for the complex alloys as crack extension proceeds. In NbMoTaW, compositional complexity appears to promote dislocation nucleation relative to pure Nb, despite theoretical predictions that the alloy should be relatively more brittle. In Nb45Ta25Ti15Hf15, alloying alters the fracture mode compared to elemental Nb, promoting crack tip blunting and enhancing resistance to crack propagation.

Atomistic-Scale Simulations on Graphene Bending Near a Copper Surface

Molecular insights into graphene-catalyst surface interactions can provide useful information for the efficient design of copper current collectors with graphitic anode interfaces. As graphene bending can affect the local electron density, it should reflect its local reactivity as well. Using ReaxFF reactive molecular simulations, we have investigated the possible bending of graphene in vacuum and near copper surfaces. We describe the energy cost for graphene bending and the binding energy with hydrogen and copper with two different ReaxFF parameter sets, demonstrating the relevance of using the more recently developed ReaxFF parameter sets for graphene properties. Moreover, the draping angle at copper step edges obtained from our atomistic simulations is in good agreement with the draping angle determined from experimental measurements, thus validating the ReaxFF results.
