Micromechanical stresses in SiC-reinforced Al2O3 composites

Applying an Eshelby (1957) approach, the internal micromechanical stresses within an SiC-inclusion-reinforced (platelet to whisker geometries) polycrystalline alumina matrix composite were calculated. The results are compared to the experimental residual stress measurements of a SiC-whisker-reinforced Al2O3 by Predecki, et al. (in press) and found to be in excellent agreement. The calculations are then extended to SiC-reinforced composites with polycrystalline mullite, silicon nitride, and cordierite matrices. It is concluded that the internal stresses are significantly influenced by the inclusion geometry as well as the thermoelastic differences between the inclusion and the matrix and also the volume fraction.

Crystallization behavior and properties of BaO-Al2O3-2SiO2 glass matrices

Glass of stoichiometric celsian composition, BaO-Al2O3-2SiO2, is a potential glass-ceramic matrix for high-temperature composites. The glass has a density of 3.39 g/cu cm, thermal expansion coefficient of 6.6 x 10(exp -6)/deg C glass transition temperature of 910 C, and dilatometric softening point of 925 C. On heat treatment, only hexacelsian crystallized out on the surface, but both celsian and hexacelsian were present in the bulk. Effects of cold isostatic pressing (CIP), sintering, and hot pressing, in the presence and absence of an additive, on the formation of the celsian phase in the glass were studied. CIP'ed samples, after appropriate heat treatments, always crystallized out as celsian whereas the presence of 5 to 10 weight percent of an additive was necessary for formation of celsian in sintered as well as hot pressed specimens. Green density increased with CIP'ing pressure but had no effect on sintered density. Hot pressing resulted in fully dense samples.

Crystallization kinetics of BaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses

Barium aluminosilicate glasses are being investigated as matrix materials in high-temperature ceramic composites for structural applications. Kinetics of crystallization of two refractory glass compositions in the barium aluminosilicate system were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From variable heating rate DTA, the crystallization activation energies for glass compositions (wt percent) 10BaO-38Al2O3-51SiO2-1MoO3 (glass A) and 39BaO-25Al2O3-35SiO2-1MoO3 (glass B) were determined to be 553 and 558 kJ/mol, respectively. On thermal treatment, the crystalline phases in glasses A and B were identified as mullite (3Al2O3-2SiO2) and hexacelsian (BaO-Al2O3-2SiO2), respectively. Hexacelsian is a high-temperature polymorph which is metastable below 1590 C. It undergoes structural transformation into the orthorhombic form at approximately 300 C accompanied by a large volume change which is undesirable for structural applications. A process needs to be developed where stable monoclinic celsian, rather than hexacelsian, precipitates out as the crystal phase in glass B.

Vacuum ultraviolet thin films. I - Optical constants of BaF2, CaF2, LaF3, MgF2, Al2O3, HfO2, and SiO2 thin films. II - Vacuum ultraviolet all-dielectric narrowband filters

An iteration process matching calculated and measured reflectance and transmittance values in the 120-230 nm VUV region is presently used to ascertain the optical constants of bulk MgF2, as well as films of BaF2, CaF2, LaF3, MgF2, Al2O3, HfO2, and SiO2 deposited on MgF2 substrates. In the second part of this work, a design concept is demonstrated for two filters, employing rapidly changing extinction coefficients, centered at 135 nm for BaF2 and 141 nm for SiO2. These filters are shown to yield excellent narrowband spectral performance in combination with narrowband reflection filters.

Thermal expansion and elastic anisotropy in single crystal Al2O3 and SiC whiskers

The crystalline thermal expansion and elastic anisotropies of SiC and Al2O3 whiskers are considered in the process of evaluation of the anisotropy of the alpha-E product, the thermoelastic stress index. It is demonstrated to exhibit considerable crystalline anisotropy and a substantial temperature dependence, both of which will influence the thermal and residual stresses in composites using these materials for reinforcement.

Al-26 and O-16 in the early solar system - Clues from meteoritic Al2O3

The study focuses on 26 Al2O3 grains up to 20 micron in size recovered from the Murchison C2 chrondite. It is observed that Mg-26/Mg-24 ranges up to 56 times the solar system ratio, but the initial Al-26/Al-27 ratios do not exceed the canonical maximum of 0.00005 in other meteoritic samples. It is concluded that this ratio represents the abundance of live Al-26 in the early solar system, not fossil radiogenic Mg-26 surviving from presolar times. The grains are shown to divide into three groups on the basis of Al-26, O-16, Ti, and V content, and distinctive correlations are found for Al-26 and O-16. An origin from at least three discrete components is suggested, two of which contained live Al-26.

Tribological evaluation of an Al2O3-SiO2 ceramic fiber candidate for high temperature sliding seals

A test program to determine the relative sliding durability of an alumina-silica candidate ceramic fiber for high temperature sliding seal applications as described. This work represents the first reporting of the sliding durability of this material system. Pin-on-disk tests were used to evaluate the potential seal material by sliding a tow or bundle of the candidate ceramic fiber against a superalloy test disk. Friction was measured during the tests and fiber wear, indicated by the extent of fibers broken in the tow or bundle, was measured at the end of each test. Test variables studied included ambient temperatures from 25 C to 900 C, loads from 1.3 to 21.2 Newtons, and sliding velocities from 0.025 to 0.25 m/sec. In addition, the effects of fiber diameter, elastic modulus, and a pretest fiber heat treatment on friction and wear were measured. In most cases, wear increased with temperature. Friction ranged from about 0.36 at 500 C and low velocity (0.025 m/s) to over 1.1 at 900 C and high velocity (0.25 m/s). The pretest fiber heat treatment, which caused significant durability reductions for alumina-boria-silica ceramic fibers tested previously, had little effect on the alumina-silica fibers tested here. These results indicate that the alumina-silica (Al2O3-SiO2) fiber is a good candidate material system for high temperature sliding seal applications.

Effect of thermal cycling on interface bonding requirements in Al2O3 fiber-reinforced superalloy composites

CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) mismatch-induced stresses as they affect the fiber-matrix bond integrity of Al2O3 fiber-reinforced superalloy composites are examined. Of the three individual stress components, only the radial stress directly affects the integrity of the fiber-matrix interface. It is noted that a compressive radial stress leads to a clamping action on the fiber and is therefore beneficial to the integrity of the fiber-matrix bond. A radial tensile stress, on the other hand, can cause debonding of the fiber from the matrix for a weak fiber-matrix bond.

Development of lasers optimized for pumping Ti:Al2O3 lasers

Laboratory demonstrations that were completed included: (1) an all-solid-state, broadly tunable, single-frequency, Ti:Al2O3 master oscillator, and (2) a technique for obtaining 'long' (nominally 100- to 200-ns FWHM) laser pulses from a Q-switched, Nd oscillator at energy levels commensurate with straightforward amplification to the joule level. A diode-laser-pumped, Nd:YLF laser with intracavity SHG was designed, constructed, and evaluated. With this laser greater than 0.9 W of CW, output power at 523.5 nm with 10 W of diode-laser pump power delivered to the Nd:YLF crystal was obtained. With this laser as a pump source, for the first time, to our knowledge, an all solid-state, single frequency, Ti:Al203 laser with sufficient output power to injection seed a high-energy oscillator over a 20-nm bandwidth was demonstrated. The pulsed laser work succeeded in demonstrating pulse-stretching in a Q-switched Nd:YAG oscillator. Pulse energies greater than 50-mJ were obtained in pulses with 100- to 200-ns pulsewidths (FWHM).

Mg and Ti isotopes in presolar Al2O3

Oxygen isotopic compositions and initial Al-26/Al-27 ratios were reported for two presolar Al2O3 grains, Orgueil B and Bishunpur B39. In Orgueil B, O-17/O-16 is about twice the solar value but O-18/O-16 is normal. In B39, O-17/O-16 is approximately 7x higher than solar and O-18/O-16 is 0.6x the solar value. Spectroscopic observations of red giant stars show similar O compositions, which result when material that has experienced partial H burning is mixed into the stellar envelope by the first dredge-up. The O-17/O-16 ratios indicate that Orgueil B originated around a star of approximately 1.5 solar mass, while B39 formed around either a approximately 2 solar mass or 4-7 solar mass star. Both grains formed with Al-26/Al-27 ratios of approximately 10(exp -3). Aluminum-26 is produced in the H shell after core H burning has ceased and first dredge-up has occurred. It is spread through the envelope by the third dredge-up, which occurs in low- and intermediate-mass stars as a series of mixing events driven by thermal pulses in the He shell. In intermediate-mass stars (3-8 solar mass), Al-26 can also be brought to the surface by the second dredge-up, which occurs at the end of core He burning. We have measured Ti isotopes by ion probe in Orgueil B and Bishunpur B39, looking for evidence of He-shell nucleosynthesis. Stars of approximately 1.5 solar mass do not experience second dredge-up, so the Al-26 in Orgueil B must have been mixed outward during third dredge-up, which also supplies He-shell material to the envelope. The size of the isotopic shifts in Ti and Mg suggest that Orgueil B contains approximately 5-10x more material from the He-shell than from the H-shell. In contrast, the lack of measurable Mg and Ti anomalies in B39 imply little or no He-shell contribution. This indicates that Al-26 in B39 was supplied by second dredge-up prior to He-shell ignition and points to a parent star of 4-7 solar mass.

Tribological evaluation of an Al2O3-SiO2 ceramic fiber candidate for high temperature sliding seals

A test program to determine the relative sliding durability of an alumina-silica candidate ceramic fiber for high temperature sliding seal applications is described. Test variables studied included ambient temperatures from 25 to 900 C, loads from 1.3 to 21.2 N, and sliding velocities from 0.025 to 0.25 m/sec. In addition, the effects of fiber diameter and elastic modulus on friction and wear were measured. Thin gold films deposited on the superalloy disk surface were evaluated in an effort to reduce friction and wear of the fibers. In most cases, wear increased with test temperature. Friction ranged from 0.36 at 500 C and low velocity (0.025 m/sec) to over 1.1 at 900 C and high velocity (0.25 m/sec). The gold films resulted in satisfactory lubrication of the fibers at 25 C. At elevated temperatures diffusion of substrate elements degraded the films. These results indicate that the alumina-silica (Al2O3-SiO2) fiber is a good candidate material system for high temperature sliding seal applications. More work is needed to reduce friction.

Time/Temperature Dependent Tensile Strength of SiC and Al2O3-Based Fibers

In order to understand and model the thermomechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites, stress-rupture, fast-fracture, and warm-up rupture studies were conducted on various advanced SiC and Al2O3-based fibers in the, temperature range from 20 to 1400 C in air as well as in inert environments. The measured stress-rupture, fast fracture, and warm-up rupture strengths were correlated into a single master time/temperature-dependent strength plot for each fiber type using thermal activation and slow crack growth theories. It is shown that these plots are useful for comparing and selecting fibers for CMC and MMC reinforcement and that, in comparison to stress rupture tests, the fast-fracture and warm-up tests can be used for rapid generation of these plots.

MgO-Al2O3-ZrO2 Amorphous Ternary Composite: A Dense and Stable Optical Coating

The process-parameter-dependent optical and structural properties of MgO-Al2O3-ZrO2 ternary mixed-composite material were investigated. Optical properties were derived from spectrophotometric measurements. The surface morphology, grain size distributions, crystallographic phases, and process- dependent material composition of films were investigated through the use of atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis made evident the correlation between the optical constants and the process-dependent compositions in the films. It is possible to achieve environmentally stable amorphous films with high packing density under certain optimized process conditions.

The Effects of Gravity on the Combustion Synthesis of B2O3-Al2O3-MgO Glass Ceramic Composites

Glass ceramic composites based on B2O3-Al2O3-MgO have been produced by combustion synthesis in a Self-propagating mode. The gravitational effects on the combustion characteristics such as combustion wave velocity (V), and combustion temperature (T(sub c)) were studied. The results showed that the gravitational effects on these parameters were inconclusive. The microstructure of this system has also been analyzed with X-ray Diffraction and light microscopy. These results showed a higher amount of divitrification occurs under both reduced gravity and high gravity conditions. The gravitational effects on formation of pores, overall porosity and apparent porosity for this family of glass-ceramics also shows to be inconclusive. Possible reasons for these results are discussed.

Crystallographic Texture and Orientation Variants in Al2O3-Y3Al5O12 Directionally Solidified Eutectic Crystals

Eutectic rods of Al2O3 and Y3Al5O12 were grown by a laser-heated float zone method, and their microstructure and crystallographic texture were studied by scanning electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction and x-ray diffraction. The composites were found to be highly textured with two twin-related crystallographic orientation relationships between the phases. Electron backscattered diffraction was employed to determine the spatial distribution of the orientational variants within the samples and to define the crystallographic orientation of various microstructural features.

Thermochemistry of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) and Advanced Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coating Systems

CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) oxides are constituents in a broad number of materials and minerals which have recently inferred to discussions in materials science, planetary science, geochemistry and cosmochemistry communities. In materials science, there is increasing interest in the degradation studies of thermal (TBC) and environmental (EBC) barrier coatings of gas turbines by molten CMAS. CMAS minerals usually are carried by the intake air into gas turbines, e.g. in aircraft engines, and their deposits react at high temperatures (1000C) with the coating materials. This causes degradation and accelerated failure of the static and rotating components of the turbine engines. We discuss some preliminary results of the reactions between CMAS and Rare-Earth (RE Y, Yb, Dy, Gd, Nd and Sm) oxide stabilized ZrO2 or HfO2 systems, and the stability of the resulting oxides and silicates. Plasma sprayed hollow tube samples ( 2.2 mm and 26 mm height) were half filled with CMAS powder, wrapped and sealed with platinum foil, and heat treated at 1310 C for 5h. Samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and cross section electron microscopy analysis.
