Results from the PALM-3000 High-Order Adaptive Optics System

The first of a new generation of high actuator density AO systems developed for large telescopes, PALM-3000 is optimized for high-contrast exoplanet science but will support operation with natural guide stars as faint as V approx. 18. PALM-3000 began commissioning in June 2011 on the Palomar 200" telescope and has to date over 60 nights of observing. The AO system consists of two Xinetics deformable mirrors, one with 66 by 66 actuators and another with 21 by 21 actuators, a Shack-Hartman WFS with four pupil sampling modes (ranging from 64 to 8 samples across the pupil), and a full vector matrix multiply real-time system capable of running at 2KHz frame rates. We present the details of the completed system, and initial results. Operating at 2 kHz with 8.3cm pupil sampling on-sky, we have achieved a K-band Strehl ratio as high as 84% in approx.1.0 arcsecond visible seeing.

Adaptive optics - One meter deformable composite mirror

An account is given of analyses conducted in the development of a lightweight/deformable-reflector concept for large segmented precision telescope applications. The stiffness of the reflector, which is of GRP face sheet/composite honeycomb core sandwich construction, is governed by the requirement that the lowest natural frequency be no lower than 100 Hz. The reflector surface-deformation method involved embedding an inplane actuator on the back facesheet of the reflector structure; no substructure is required, and the corrections required of the actuators are of the order of microns. An account is given of the high fidelity reflector analytical model used to predict the structural behavior of the reflectors in the micronic deflection regime.

Development of Mesospheric Sodium Laser Beacon for Atmospheric Adaptive Optics

A solid-state source of long pulse length, sodium-resonance radiation was developed for the purpose of generating an artificial star in the earth's mesospheric sodium layer. This radiation is generated by sum-frequency mixing the output of a 1.064 micron Nd:YAG laser with the output of a 1.319-micron Nd:YAG laser. By operating these lasers at wavelengths very close to the peak of their tuning curves, it is possible to match the wavelength of the sum-frequency radiation to that of the sodium D2 adsorption wavelength. Two pulsed laser systems were constructed, one producing as much as 0.6 J of sodium resonance radiation at a 10-Hz repetition rate and another producing as much as 24 mJ at a 840-Hz repetition rate. In both laser systems, the 1.06-micron and 1.32-micron Nd:YAG lasers are configured as mode-locked master oscillators followed by power amplifiers. Other aspects of this project are presented.

Adaptive optics for laser power beaming

It has been proposed to use a high energy pulsed laser to beam power into space for satellites or a lunar base. The effects of atmospheric transmission are critical to such a system. Thermal blooming in the atmosphere can cause the beam to spread rapidly. Atmospheric turbulence can cause beam bending or beam spreading, resulting in the loss of transmitted energy that fails to hit the target receiver.

A deformable mirror concept for adaptive optics in space

A concept for correcting long wave low order distortions of a lightweight composite mirror for space applications is described. One of the attractive features of this concept for space applications is that a backup structure is not required. The actuation system consists of piezoelectric elements, attached directly to the back of the mirror surface. The system is self balancing. This paper describes the test results for a one-half meter curved composite reflector.

"High Angular Resolution Observations of Protoplanetary Disks with Adaptive Optics"

Significant results were obtained and published in the literature. The first optical detection of a circumbinary disk was reported in the ApJ at millimetric wavelengths. The size and inclination of this disk were found to be consistent with millimetric observations. Evidence was found for a cavity inside the disk as theory predicts from dust clearing by the stellar companion.

Telescope Wavefront Aberration Compensation with a Deformable Mirror in an Adaptive Optics System

With the goal of reducing the surface wavefront error of low-cost multi-meter-diameter mirrors from about 10 waves peak-to-valley (P-V), at lpm wavelength, to approximately 1-wave or less, we describe a method to compensate for slowly varying wavefront aberrations of telescope mirrors. A deformable mirror is utilized in an active optical compensation system. The kMS wavefront error of a 0.3m telescope improved to 0.05 waves (0.26 waves P-V) from the original value of 1.4 waves RMS (6.5 waves P-V), measured at 633nm, and the Strehl ratio improved to 89% from the original value of 0.08%.
