FY2021 Improvements to the New CTH Code Verification & Validation Test Suite

Over the past few years, the CTH multiphysics hydrocode has overhauled its software quality and testing processes, implementing current best practices in software quality and building a robust V&V test suite comprised of traditional hydrocode verification problems, including ASC Tri-Lab Test Suite and Enhanced Tri-Lab Test Suite problems, as well as validation problems for some of CTH’s most frequently used equations of state, materials models, and other key capabilities. Substantial progress towards building this new test suite was made in FY19 and FY20. In FY21, the test suite has been expanded to include verification and validation tests of the Steinberg-Guinan-Lund (ST) viscoplastic model and the Johnson Cook (JFRAC) fracture model. Additionally, two new verification tests were added, covering hydrodynamics and high explosive (HE) modeling capabilities: the Kidder Gaussian density problem and the Escape of HE Products (EHEP) problem from the Tri-Lab Test Suite. This report discusses each of these test problems in detail. Verification test results are compared to analytic solutions. Validation test results are compared to experimental data. Wherever possible, convergence or mesh refinement studies are included. Additionally, while implementing the Kidder verification problem, a bug was identified that affects the use of tables to initialize pressure or density in 1D or 2D calculations. A brief discussion of the bug and its fix is included. CTH demonstrates good performance overall on the new test suite problems. Simulation results showed good agreement with analytic solutions for the Kidder problem, with convergence rates ranging between 1.8 and sub-linear, and relatively good agreement for the EHEP problem, though convergence rates for pressure and density were nearly 0. The ST and JFRAC strain rate loading verification tests show good agreement with analytic solutions. Likewise, CTH simulation results show good agreement with experimental validation data, including Taylor rod impact testing, for the materials tested. Future V&V work will focus on adding 2D and 3D versions of existing verification tests as well as adding validation tests of other frequently used capabilities such as other fracture models.

CORAL-2 EAS-3 Deployment (Level-2 Milestone 7907)

This report documents the delivery and installation of rzVernal, a CORAL-2 El Capitan early delivery system deployed on the LLNL Restricted Zone network. Early ASC program users have run codes on the machine in support of application porting for the final El Capitan system which will be deployed at LLNL in CY2023. In addition to the RZ resource, rzVernal, two similar machines, Tioga and Tenaya, have been deployed on the LLNL SRD and Collaboration Zone networks in support of application readiness for the El Capitan platform.

Verification study of xRAGE’s multi-ion viscosity model

This report on the adequacy of the plasma viscosity model implemented in LANL’s ASC program code, xRAGE is organized as follows. Section I provides a brief introduction on the kinetic theory which underpins plasma viscosity, and Section II describes how plasma kinetic theory can be used to calculate plasma viscosity coefficients accurate within the hydrodynamic limit. Section III describes the existing model for calculating the plasma viscosity coefficient in xRAGE. Next, Section IV shows tests of the xRAGE viscosity model against established hydrodynamic theory in the case of binary and trinary plasma mixtures.

Application Results on Early Exascale Hardware

This Exascale Computing Project (ECP) milestone report summarizes the status of 27 of the 31 ECP Applications Development (AD) subprojects at the end of FY21. In November and December of 2021, a comprehensive assessment of AD projects was conducted by the ECP leadership along with external subject matter experts (SMEs). (NNSA application projects are reviewed separately using the ASC milestone process.) The AD review committee—consisting of the AD lead, AD deputy, Level 3 (L3), and at least one external project SME—was tasked with evaluating each project’s progress relative to ECP project goals specified in the FY21 timeline. Key areas of focus were code maturity and performance on pre-exascale systems, an in-depth analysis of final key performance parameter (KPP) verification contracts, and future R&D priorities in the final year of ECP and beyond. As such, this report contains not only an accurate snapshot of each subproject’s current status but also represents a broad account of successes and challenges in porting large scientific applications to DOE’s next-generation high-performance computing architectures – the Frontier and Aurora systems.

This report documents the results of an FY22 ASC V&V level 2 milestone demonstrating new algorithms for multifidelity uncertainty quantification. Part I of the report describes the algorithms, studies their performance on a simple model problem, and then deploys the methods to a thermal battery example from the open literature. Part II (restricted distribution) applies the multifidelity UQ methods to specific thermal batteries of interest to the NNSA/ASC program.
