Computation of turbulent flows-state-of-the-art, 1970

The state-of-the-art of turbulent flow computation is surveyed. The formulations were generalized to increase the range of their applicability, and the excitement of current debate on equation models was brought into the review. Some new ideas on the modeling of the pressure-strain term in the Reynolds stress equations are also suggested.

The prediction of structural response to buffet flow: A state-of-the-art review

Certain aspects of the dynamic system being discussed are reviewed and important structural and aerodynamic quantities of the system are discussed. A theoretical model is presented which relates these quantities to each other. These quantities are then each, in turn, considered in terms of the state of the art of determining the quantities and in terms of areas where further research is needed. The similarity laws and scaling relationships applicable to determining buffet structural response are then discussed, and areas where simplification is required or may be permissible are mentioned. Finally, the various types of model tests pertinent to predicting response of the aircraft structure to buffet flow are discussed.

Automated structural design with aeroelastic constraints - A review and assessment of the state of the art

A review and assessment of the state of the art in automated aeroelastic design is presented. Most of the aeroelastic design studies appearing in the literature deal with flutter, and, therefore, this paper also concentrates on flutter. The flutter design problem is divided into three cases: as isolated flutter mode, neighboring flutter modes, and a hump mode which can rise and cause a sudden, discontinuous change in the flutter velocity. Synthesis procedures are presented in terms of techniques that are appropriate for problems of various levels of difficulty. Current trends, which should result in more efficient, powerful and versatile design codes, are discussed. Approximate analysis procedures and the need for simultaneous consideration of multiple design requirements are emphasized.

Heat pipes for spacecraft temperature control: An assessment of the state-of-the-art

Various heat pipe temperature control techniques are critically evaluated using characteristic features and properties, including heat transport capability, volume and mass requirements, complexity and ease of fabrication, reliability, and control characteristics. Advantages and disadvantages of specific approaches are derived and discussed. Using four development levels, the state of-the-art of the various heat pipe temperature control techniques is assessed. The need for further research and development is discussed and suggested future efforts are projected.

Heat pipes for spacecraft temperature control: An assessment of the state-of-the-art

Spacecraft applications that require the efficient cooling of high-powered components, the precise temperature control of sensitive electronic and optical components, and the protection of cooled components from temporary, adverse environmental conditions are increasing. Heat pipes using gas, vapor, liquid, or voltage control to provide variable conductance or diode thermal behavior have been and are continuing to be developed to meet increasingly difficult requirements. The various control techniques are critically evaluated using characteristic features and properties, including heat transport capability, volume and mass requirements, complexity and ease of fabrication, reliability, and control characteristics. As a result, advantages and disadvantages of specific approaches are derived and discussed. Using four development levels, the state-of-the-art of the various heat pipe temperature control techniques is assessed.

Drive-train dynamics technology - State-of-the-art and design of a test facility for advanced development

A program for the development and verification of drive-train dynamic technology is described along with its basis and the results expected from it. A central feature of this program is a drive-train test facility designed for the testing and development of advanced drive-train components, including shaft systems, dampers, and couplings. Previous efforts in designing flexible dynamic drive-train systems are reviewed, and the present state of the art is briefly summarized. The design of the test facility is discussed with major attention given to the formulation of the test-rig concept, dynamic scaling of model shafts, and the specification of design parameters. Specific efforts envisioned for the test facility are briefly noted, including evaluations of supercritical test shafts, stability thresholds for various sources and types of instabilities that can exist in shaft systems, effects of structural flexibility on the dynamic performance of dampers, and methods for vibration control in two-level and three-level flexible shaft systems.

The art and science of rotary wing data correlation

This paper presents an overview of the correlation of helicopter rotor performance and loads data from various tests and analyses. Information is included from U.S. Army-sponsored tests conducted by Bell Helicopter Company for free-flight full-scale tests in the NASA-Ames 40 x 80 wind tunnel, one-fifth scale tests in the NASA-Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel, and small-scale tests of a rotor in air. These test data are compared with each other, where appropriate, and with calculated results. Typical examples illustrate the state of the art for correlation and indicate anomalies encountered. It is concluded that a procedure using theoretical analyses to aid in interpretation and evaluation of test results is essential to developing a science of correlation.

A perspective on the state of the art of photographic interpretation

Aerial photography and photographic interpretation are the cornerstone of remote sensing. Many interpretative techniques used on data from these more advanced or unconventional imaging systems are essentially extensions of techniques originally developed for the analysis of aerial photographic data. As research on the analysis and application of data from other than photographic imaging systems progresses, the role of the interpretation of aerial photography becomes more important. Any individual who wishes to practice the art of remote sensing data analysis must gain a thorough knowledge of the activities, elements and techniques of manual photographic/image interpretation. While the activities and elements of photo interpretation have remained essentially the same, technique development has continued to progress. Additional studies are proposed dealing with the basics of interactive processes.

State-of-the-art assessment of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles

The Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development, and Demonstration Act of 1976 (PL 94-413) requires that data be developed to characterize the state of the art of vehicles powered by an electric motor and those propelled by a combination of an electric motor and an internal combustion engine or other power sources. Data obtained from controlled tests of a representative number of sample vehicles, from information supplied by manufacturers or contained in the literature, and from surveys of fleet operators of individual owners of electric vehicles is discussed. The results of track and dynamometer tests conducted by NASA on 22 electric, 2 hybrid, and 5 conventional vehicles, as well as on 5 spark-ignition-engine-powered vehicles, the conventional counterparts of 5 of the vehicles, are presented.

Graphite/polyimide state-of-the-art panel discussion

The state-of-the-art of graphite/polyimides (GR/PI) composites is presented under two related subject areas: technical roadblocks to increased application and priority of technical problems. Technical roadblocks are the maturity of the 589K GR/PI material system and GR/PI structure fabrication technology. Priority of the GR/PI technical problems involves the selection of a primary polyimide resin system to reduce the scope of development problems. The GR/PI structure first priority problem is the selection and development of high temperature adhesive systems.
