Analysis of creep and relaxation in composite laminates with holes

The time-dependent behavior of composite laminates subjected to mechanical loads is studied using linear viscoelastic theory. Three-dimensional finite elements are formulated to solve the integral equilibrium equations. Analyses of creep and stress relaxation in composites with holes are performed. Results indicate that the relaxation of interlaminar stresses depends on temperature and layups, and that the creep response of strains is affected by stress redistribution between plies.

Micromechanical analysis of the time-dependent response of unidirectional composites

The micromechanical model of Aboudi (1982, 1984, and 1986) is used to predict the time-dependent creep behavior of viscoelastic-matrix composites with unidirectional elastic-fiber reinforcement. The derivation of the model and its numerical implementation are outlined, and predictions for T300/934 CFRP at 72 and 250 F are compared with experimental measurements in extensive tables and graphs. Good agreement is demonstrated, and the applicability of the present approach to composite laminates and hybrid materials such as ARALL is indicated.

Estimation of Boltzmann damping coefficients in beam models

A distributed parameter model of a flexible structure with Boltzmann type viscoelastic damping is discussed. A computational method for the estimation of the damping parameters is developed, and theoretical convergence results are given. An example is presented in which actual experimental data is used, demonstrating the efficacy of the computational method and the plausibility of the model for predicting response in damped structures.

Tether damping in space

This paper analyzes the dynamics of a long tether connecting two spacecraft in earth orbit, one of the spacecraft having dominant mass. In particular, it considers the material damping of the tether. The nominal position of the tether is stabilized by the gravity gradient such that it is aligned with the local vertical. The tether is modeled as a viscoelastic flexible continuum. Modal frequencies are derived in an analytical approximation form. Damping ratios are estimated according to the linear model calibrated by ground measurements. The results show that, with properly chosen tether material and braiding structure, longitudinal vibrations of the tethered system are well damped.

The earthquake deformation cycle - Examples from South America and the western United States

Observations of an interplate, thrust earthquake in Argentina are used to characterize a cyclic pattern of earthquake deformation. The cycle consists of steady strain accumulation, coseismic strain release, a period of continued strain release due to afterslip, and rapid postseismic strain accumulations which decrease exponentially and grade into steady strain accumulation. The cycle is used to interpret the deformation of three earthquakes in California, Alaska, and Montana, focusing on the mechanics of strain release. The results suggest that large postseismic movements can occur for strike-slip, thrust, and normal fault events. It is found that viscoelastic relaxation and postseismic afterslip should be incorporated in models of earthquake-related deformation. The use of these results for estimating earthquake repeat times from geodetic observations near active faults is considered.

Advanced composite materials for precision segmented reflectors

The objective in the NASA Precision Segmented Reflector (PSR) project is to develop new composite material concepts for highly stable and durable reflectors with precision surfaces. The project focuses on alternate material concepts such as the development of new low coefficient of thermal expansion resins as matrices for graphite fiber reinforced composites, quartz fiber reinforced epoxies, and graphite reinforced glass. Low residual stress fabrication methods will be developed. When coupon specimens of these new material concepts have demonstrated the required surface accuracies and resistance to thermal distortion and microcracking, reflector panels will be fabricated and tested in simulated space environments. An important part of the program is the analytical modeling of environmental stability of these new composite materials concepts through constitutive equation development, modeling of microdamage in the composite matrix, and prediction of long term stability (including viscoelasticity). These analyses include both closed form and finite element solutions at the micro and macro levels.

LaRC TPI 1500 series polymers

The crystallization behavior and the melt flow properties of two batches of 1500 series LaRC-TPI polymers from Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals (MTC) were investigated. The characterization methods include Differential Scanning Calorimetry, the x ray diffractography and the melt rheology. The as-received materials possess initial crystalline melting peak temperatures of 295 and 305 C, respectively. These materials are less readily recrystallizable at elevated temperatures when compared to other semicrystalline thermoplastics. For the samples annealed at temperatures below 330 C, a semicrystalline polymer can be obtained. On the other hand, a purely amorphous structure is realized in the samples annealed at temperatures above 330 C. Isothermal crystallization kinetics were studied by means of the simple Avrami equation. The viscoelastic properties at elevated temperatures below and above glass transition temperature of the polymers were measured. Information with regard to the molecule sizes and distributions in these polymers were also extracted from melt rheology.

Determinations of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of high polymers by the rheological properties

Several methods are reviewed by which the molecular weight (MW) and the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of polymeric material were determined from the rheological properties. A poly(arylene ether) polymer with six different molecular weights was used in this investigation. Experimentally measured MW and MWD were conducted by GPC/LALLS (gel permeation chromatography/low angle laser light scattering), and the rheological properties of the melts were measured by a Rheometric System Four rheometer. It was found that qualitative information of the MW and MWD of these polymers could be derived from the viscoelastic properties, with the methods proposed by Zeichner and Patel, and by Dormier et al., by shifting the master curves of the dynamic storage modulus, G', and the loss modulus, G'', along the frequency axis. Efforts were also made to calculate quantitative profiles of MW and MWD for these polymers from their rheological properties. The technique recently proposed by Wu was evaluated. It was found that satisfactory results could only be obtained for polymers with single modal distribution in the molecular weight.

Rate dependent constitutive models for fiber reinforced polymer composites

A literature survey was conducted to assess the state-of-the-art in rate dependent constitutive models for continuous fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials. Several recent models which include formulations for describing plasticity, viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, and rate-dependent phenomenon such as creep and stress relaxation are outlined and compared. When appropriate, these comparisons include brief descriptions of the mathematical formulations, the test procedures required for generating material constants, and details of available data comparing test results to analytical predictions.

Analysis of shell-type structures subjected to time-dependent mechanical and thermal loading

The development of a general mathematical model and solution methodologies for analyzing structural response of thin, metallic shell-like structures under dynamic and/or static thermomechanical loads is examined. In the mathematical model, geometric as well as material-type of nonlinearities are considered. Traditional as well as novel approaches are reported and detailed applications are presented in the appendices. The emphasis for the mathematical model, the related solution schemes, and the applications, is on thermal viscoelastic and viscoplastic phenomena, which can predict creep and ratchetting.

Thermoplastic matrix composites - Finite-element analysis of mode I and mode II failure specimens

A finite-element analysis was conducted to evaluate the stress distributions within mode I and mode II failure specimens, assuming both isotropic and orthotropic elastic material properties. The effects of anisotropy on both the magnitude and the location of the highest stress concentration at the vicinity of the crack tip are significant. The results from modeling realistic blunt crack tip geometry and resin-rich zones imply that local variations in the microstructure strongly influence the stress state near the crack tip and therefore the measured fracture properties. In addition, the features of a viscoelastic model for thermoplastic matrices are described. This model will be used in future investigations of matrix-dominated failure phenomena.

Vibration suppression for precision segmented reflector backup structure

An ongoing effort at the JPL on vibration suppression for the Precision Segmented Reflector backup structure is centered on the vibration damping augmentation through a system consisting of active and passive damping members. An active member is a structural member with built-in piezoelectric actuator and sensors. An efficient method was developed for optimal placement of active and passive damping members in the truss-type backup structure. A simple synergistic model between the active and passive damping was proposed based on a weighted energy dissipation criterion. A baseline passive member design with constrained viscoelastic material treatment was used as the source of passive damping.

Eustatic sea level fluctuations induced by polar wander

It is shown here that polar wander of a viscoelastic, stratified earth can induce global sea level fluctuations comparable to the short-term component in eustatic sea-level curves. The sign of these fluctuations, which are very sensitive to the rheological stratification, depends on the geographical location of the observation point; rises and falls in sea level can thus be coeval in different parts of the world. This finding is a distinct contrast to the main assumption underlying the reconstruction of eustatic curves, namely that global sea-level events produce the same depositional sequence everywhere. It is proposed that polar wander should be added to the list of geophysical mechanisms that can control the third-order cycles in sea level.

Convergence of infinite dimensional sampled LQR problems - Theory and numerical results

A theory is developed for the convergence of the closed-loop solution to infinite-dimensional discrete-time linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) problems on the infinite time interval to the solution of a corresponding continuous-time LQR problem as the length of the sampling interval tends toward zero. Convergence of solutions to the operator algebraic Riccati equation and corresponding optimal feedback control gains is guaranteed under appropriate uniform stabilizability and detectability conditions and consistent sampling. Also presented are numerical results involving the optimal LQ control of a heat or diffusion equation, a hereditary or delay differential equation, and a hybrid system of ordinary and partial differential equations describing the transverse vibration of a cantilevered Voigt-Kelvin viscoelastic beam with tip mass.

Composite Struts Would Damp Vibrations

New design of composite-material (fiber/matrix laminate) struts increases damping of longitudinal vibrations without decreasing longitudinal stiffness or increasing weight significantly. Plies with opposing chevron patterns of fibers convert longitudinal vibrational stresses into shear stresses in intermediate viscoelastic layer, which dissipate vibrational energy. Composite strut stronger than aluminum strut of same weight and stiffness.
