Alloying of U-Al-SS as a Simulant for Pu-Al-SS Alloying

The Savannah River National Laboratory evaluated several options for disposition of stainless steel (SS)–clad plutonium metal, particularly Pu-10.6 at. % Al (Pu- 1.3 wt% Al) alloy fuel. One technology considered was alloying fuel with SS. The goal of the alloying would be to make a SS-Pu alloy that was a nonproliferable waste form with secondary Pu-rich microencapsulated regions distributed throughout the refractory SS. The microencapsulation of the Pu regions should therefore allow the waste form to meet the requirements for a low attractiveness waste as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. Plutonium-bearing alloys at these levels could potentially be suitable for disposal at a waste isolation pilot plant. Four metal ingots were successfully fabricated using U and Al as a surrogate for Pu-Al. The U was distributed and microencapsulated by the alloy matrix, thereby setting the stage for subsequent tests using SS-clad fuel elements containing Pu-10.6Al.

Validation of the DESI 2024 Lyα forest BAO analysis using synthetic datasets

The first year of data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) contains the largest set of Lyman-α (Lyα) forest spectra ever observed. This data, collected in the DESI Data Release 1 (DR1) sample, has been used to measure the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature at redshift z = 2.33. In this work, we use a set of 150 synthetic realizations of DESI DR1 to validate the DESI 2024 Lyα forest BAO measurement presented in [1]. The synthetic data sets are based on Gaussian random fields using the log-normal approximation. We produce realistic synthetic DESI spectra that include all major contaminants affecting the Lyα forest. The synthetic data sets span a redshift range 1.8 < z < 3.8, and are analyzed using the same framework and pipeline used for the DESI 2024 Lyα forest BAO measurement. To measure BAO, we use both the Lyα auto-correlation and its cross-correlation with quasar positions. We use the mean of correlation functions from the set of DESI DR1 realizations to show that our model is able to recover unbiased measurements of the BAO position. We also fit each mock individually and study the population of BAO fits in order to validate BAO uncertainties and test our method for estimating the covariance matrix of the Lyα forest correlation functions. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results and identify the needs for the next generation of Lyα forest synthetic data sets, with the top priority being to simulate the effect of BAO broadening due to non-linear evolution.

Surrogate models for plasma displacement and current in 3D perturbed magnetohydrodynamic equilibria in tokamaks

Abstract A numerical database of over one thousand perturbed three-dimensional (3D) equilibria has been generated, constructed based on the MARS-F (Liu et al 2000 Phys. Plasmas 7 3681) computed plasma response to the externally applied 3D field sources in multiple tokamak devices. Perturbed 3D equilibria with the n = 1–4 ( n is the toroidal mode number) toroidal periodicity are computed. Surrogate models are created for the computed perturbed 3D equilibrium utilizing model order reduction (MOR) techniques. In particular, retaining the first few eigenstates from the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the data is found to produce reasonably accurate MOR-representations for the key perturbed quantities, such as the perturbed parallel plasma current density and the plasma radial displacement. SVD also helps to reveal the core versus edge plasma response to the applied 3D field. For the database covering the conventional aspect ratio devices, about 95% of data can be represented by the truncated SVD-series with inclusion of only the first five eigenstates, achieving a relative error (RE) below 20%. The MOR-data is further utilized to train neural networks (NNs) to enable fast reconstruction of perturbed 3D equilibria, based on the two-dimensional equilibrium input and the 3D source field. The best NN-training is achieved for the MOR-data obtained with a global SVD approach, where the full set of samples used for NN training and testing are stretched and form a large matrix which is then subject to SVD. The fully connected multi-layer perceptron, with one or two hidden layers, can be trained to predict the MOR-data with less than 10% RE. As a key insight, a better strategy is to train separate NNs for the plasma response fields with different toroidal mode numbers. It is also better to apply MOR and to subsequently train NNs separately for conventional and low aspect ratio devices, due to enhanced toroidal coupling of Fourier spectra in the plasma response in the latter case.

Cosmic shear in harmonic space from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 Data: compatibility with configuration space results

ABSTRACT We perform a cosmic shear analysis in harmonic space using the first year of data collected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1). We measure the cosmic weak lensing shear power spectra using the metacalibration catalogue and perform a likelihood analysis within the framework of CosmoSIS. We set scale cuts based on baryonic effects contamination and model redshift and shear calibration uncertainties as well as intrinsic alignments. We adopt as fiducial covariance matrix an analytical computation accounting for the mask geometry in the Gaussian term, including non-Gaussian contributions. A suite of 1200 lognormal simulations is used to validate the harmonic space pipeline and the covariance matrix. We perform a series of stress tests to gauge the robustness of the harmonic space analysis. Finally, we use the DES-Y1 pipeline in configuration space to perform a similar likelihood analysis and compare both results, demonstrating their compatibility in estimating the cosmological parameters S8, σ8, and Ωm. We use the DES-Y1 metacalibration shape catalogue, with photometric redshifts estimates in the range of 0.2−1.3, divided in four tomographic bins finding σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5 = 0.766 ± 0.033 at 68 per cent CL. The methods implemented and validated in this paper will allow us to perform a consistent harmonic space analysis in the upcoming DES data.

Leptonic unitarity triangles

We present a comprehensive analysis of leptonic unitarity triangles, using both current neutrino oscillation data and projections of next-generation oscillation measurements. Future experiments, sensitive to the degree of CP violation in the lepton sector, will enable the construction of precise triangles. We show how unitarity violation could manifest in the triangles and discuss how they serve as unitarity tests. We also propose the use of Jarlskog factors as a complementary means of probing unitarity. This analysis highlights the importance of testing the unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix, an understanding of which is crucial for deciphering the nature of the neutrino sector.

Space-Time Block Preconditioning for Incompressible Flow

Parallel-in-time methods have become increasingly popular in the simulation of time-dependent numerical PDEs, allowing for the efficient use of additional message passing interface processes when spatial parallelism saturates. Most methods treat the solution and parallelism in space and time separately. In contrast, all-at-once methods solve the full space-time system directly, largely treating time as simply another spatial dimension. All-at-once methods offer a number of benefits over separate treatment of space and time, most notably significantly increased parallelism and faster time to solution (when applicable). However, the development of fast, scalable all-at-once methods has largely been limited to time-dependent (advection-)diffusion problems. This paper introduces the concept of space-time block preconditioning for the all-at-once solution of incompressible flow. By extending well-known concepts of spatial block preconditioning to the space-time setting, we develop a block preconditioner whose application requires the solution of a space-time (advection-)diffusion equation in the velocity block, coupled with a pressure Schur complement approximation consisting of independent spatial solves at each time-step, and a space-time matrix-vector multiplication. The new method is tested on four classical models in incompressible flow. Finally, the results indicate perfect scalability in refinement of spatial and temporal mesh spacing, perfect scalability in nonlinear Picard iteration count when applied to a nonlinear Navier--Stokes problem, and minimal overhead in terms of number of preconditioner applications compared with sequential time-stepping.

Accelerated coupled Monte Carlo-Thermal hydraulic calculations using a hybrid GTF-diffusion-based prediction block: first results

Accurate predictions of spatial power and temperature distributions require the coupling of a neutron transport solver with a thermal-hydraulic (TH) feedback. Nowadays, Monte Carlo (MC) codes are widely coupled to TH solvers, typically via a Picard iteration (PI) method, due to the higher fidelity that such frameworks can produce. To speed up a PI, a prediction step can produce an improved initial guess for a source distribution and feed it to the MC code. Recent work investigated a prediction step that uses generalized transfer functions (GTFs) to predict the macroscopic cross sections' variations following a perturbation in TH properties, such as coolant density. The previous method also relied on first order perturbation (FOP) theory to predict perturbed power profiles, rather than using an expensive MC iterate. The implemented FOP method relied on generating a fission matrix from which the forward and adjoint Eigenmodes were extracted and later used to for power calculations. The generation of the fission matrix can introduce a significant computational overhead, therefore undermining the performance of the proposed hybrid technique when applied to high-dimensional problems, e.g., full core calculations. This work attempts to improve the GTF-FOP prediction step by replacing the FOP solver with a nodal diffusion solver, thus eliminating the need to calculate a fission matrix. The GTF-diffusion step was tested for various moderator density perturbations. In each case, the predicted power distribution showed good agreement with the reference case. The latter is attributed to the generally good prediction of most spatially distributed macroscopic cross sections, except the transport cross section, which will become the focus of future work. Analysis of Silver Release from Furnace-Tested TRISO Particles

High temperature testing of intact TRISO particles previously irradiated in the AGR-5/6/7 experiment was performed in the Furnace for Irradiated TRISO Testing (FITT) to directly confirm diffusive release of silver and europium from intact TRISO particles. Testing was conducted from 1,100–1,600°C for exposure times up to 100 h to directly confirm silver through layer release below safety testing temperatures. The FITT analysis showed highest levels of silver release at 1,300–1,400°C which confirms athermal release behaviors previous observed in step-wise and transient safety tests. Additionally, release was non-uniform with some particles releasing a majority of their inventory while others did not appear to release silver under identical testing conditions, which was consistent with historic observations. An assessment of the effective silver diffusion coefficient in the SiC layer was conducted and indicated maximum values in the 1,300–1,400°C range. The magnitude of the calculated diffusion coefficients also exceeded currently accepted diffusion coefficients. The release behavior of europium from intact particles was also analyzed in FITT for at 1,450–1,550°C for 500 h to 750 h. Direct confirmation of europium release below safety testing temperatures was confirmed absent contributions from matrix release. The analysis indicated europium release follows a general Arrhenius behavior and suggests general uniform release and indicates irradiation conditions influence observed release response. Calculated diffusion kinetics agree well with historic experiments.

Prediction of compressor stall for distorted and undistorted flow by use of a multistage compressor simulation on the digital computer

A simulation technique is presented for the prediction of compressor stall for axial-flow compressors for clean and distorted inlet flow. The simulation is implemented on the digital computer and uses stage stacking and lumped-volume gas dynamics. The resulting nonlinear differential equations are linearized about a steady-state operating point, and a Routh-Hurwitz stability test is performed on the linear system matrix. Parallel compressor theory is utilized to extend the technique to the distorted inlet flow problem. The method is applied to the eight-stage J85-13 compressor.

Parallel compressor theory is utilized to extend the technique to the distorted inlet flow problem. The method is applied to the eight-stage J85-13 compressor. Analytical stall prediction for the undistorted stall line shows good agreement with experimental results. The predicted stall line for distorted inlet flow is in agreement with experimental results only for large distortion extents and/or low distortion levels. Results for low distortion extents and high distortion level do not agree with experimental results.

Interlaminar shear properties of graphite fiber, high-performance resin composites

Short beam testing was used to determine the shear properties of laminates consisting of T-300 and Celion 3000 and 6000 graphite fibers, in epoxy, hot melt and solvent bismaleimide, polyimide and polystyrylpyridine (PSP). Epoxy, composites showed the highest interlaminar shear strength, with values for all other resins being substantially lower. The dependence of interlaminar shear properties on the fiber-resin interfacial bond and on resin wetting characteristics and mechanical properties is investigated, and it is determined that the lower shear strength of the tested composites, by comparison with epoxy resin matrix composites, is due to their correspondingly lower interfacial bond strengths. An investigation of the effect of the wettability of carbon fiber tow on shear strength shows wetting variations among resins that are too small to account for the large shear strength property differences observed.

Kinematics of the CS method for the treatment of molecular collisions

The problem of the quantum treatment of nonreactive collisions of two simple molecules or of an atom and a molecule is considered mathematically. Kinematical structure theorems analogous to the Wigner-Eckart theorem for scalar operators are derived for the transition operator (T-operator) of a two-molecule system, where, in addition to the usual conservation laws, certain additional conservation laws are presumed satisfied in a collision. The additional conservation laws were examined in order to develop a testable approximation scheme (CS method) for the specification of the kinematics of a system of two rigid diatomic molecules. The rand p-helicity basis states for a two-rigid rotor system are defined and unitary transformations established between these and conventional bases. It is found that only questionable criteria exist for testing the on-the-energy-shell matrix of a T(energy) operator for the presence of properties of two of the additional conservation laws.

Binary synaptic connections based on memory switching in a-Si:H for artificial neural networks

A scheme for nonvolatile associative electronic memory storage with high information storage density is proposed which is based on neural network models and which uses a matrix of two-terminal passive interconnections (synapses). It is noted that the massive parallelism in the architecture would require the ON state of a synaptic connection to be unusually weak (highly resistive). Memory switching using a-Si:H along with ballast resistors patterned from amorphous Ge-metal alloys is investigated for a binary programmable read only memory matrix. The fabrication of a 1600 synapse test array of uniform connection strengths and a-Si:H switching elements is discussed.

High-temperature tensile properties of fiber reinforced reaction bonded silicon nitride

Measurements of tensile properties of unidirectional silicon carbide fiber-reinforced reaction-bonded silicon nitride (SiC/RBSN) composite specimens were carried out in air at 25, 1300, and 1500 C, using a new testing technique and a specially designed gripping system that minimizes bending moment and assures that failure always occurred in the gage section. The material was found to display metallike stress-strain behavior at all temperatures tested, and a noncatastrophic failure beyond the matrix fracture. The tensile properties were found to be temperature dependent, with the values of the ultimate tensile strength decreasing with temperature, from 543 MPa at 25 C to 169 at 1500 C.
