Calculation of the motion of an airplane under the influence of irregular disturbances

The application of mathematical advances made in electricity and other branches to problems of airplane dynamics is demonstrated. The Heaviside-Bromwich methods of solution of linear differential equations are described and it is shown how these methods avoid the consideration of boundary conditions and of particular or complementary integrals. It is pointed out that if the solution of the differential equation is obtained for the case of a unit disturbance, the effect of varying disturbances may be found therefrom by Carson's theorem. A graphical solution of Carson's integral for irregular disturbances is given. The procedure of obtaining unit solutions of the equations is then taken up and the analogy between Heaviside's symbolic series solution and a physical procedure of approximation is shown. It is suggested that a fictitious impulsive disturbance be used in the treatment of initial motions.

Technology and politics: The regional airport experience

The findings of a comparative study of the following six regional airports were presented: Dallas/Fort Worth, Kansas City, Washington, D.C., Montreal, Tampa, and St. Louis. Each case was approached as a unique historical entity, in order to investigate common elements such as: the use of predictive models in planning, the role of symbolism to heighten dramatic effects, the roles of community and professional elites, and design flexibility. Some of the factors considered were: site selection, consolidation of airline service, accessibility, land availability and cost, safety, nuisance, and pollution constraints, economic growth, expectation of regional growth, the demand forecasting conundrum, and design decisions. The hypotheses developed include the following: the effect of political, social, and economic conflicts, the stress on large capacity and dramatic, high-technology design, projections of rapid growth to explain the need for large capital outlays.

Signal design study for shuttle/TDRSS Ku-band uplink

The adequacy of the signal design approach chosen for the TDRSS/orbiter uplink was evaluated. Critical functions and/or components associated with the baseline design were identified, and design alternatives were developed for those areas considered high risk. A detailed set of RF and signal processing performance specifications for the orbiter hardware associated with the TDRSS/orbiter Ku band uplink was analyzed. Performances of a detailed design of the PN despreader, the PSK carrier synchronization loop, and the symbol synchronizer are identified. The performance of the downlink signal by means of computer simulation to obtain a realistic determination of bit error rate degradations was studied. The three channel PM downlink signal was detailed by means of analysis and computer simulation.

Concatenated coding systems employing a unit-memory convolutional code and a byte-oriented decoding algorithm

Concatenated coding systems utilizing a convolutional code as the inner code and a Reed-Solomon code as the outer code are considered. In order to obtain very reliable communications over a very noisy channel with relatively small coding complexity, it is proposed to concatenate a byte oriented unit memory convolutional code with an RS outer code whose symbol size is one byte. It is further proposed to utilize a real time minimal byte error probability decoding algorithm, together with feedback from the outer decoder, in the decoder for the inner convolutional code. The performance of the proposed concatenated coding system is studied, and the improvement over conventional concatenated systems due to each additional feature is isolated.

The decision tree classifier - Design and potential

A new classifier has been developed for the computerized analysis of remote sensor data. The decision tree classifier is essentially a maximum likelihood classifier using multistage decision logic. It is characterized by the fact that an unknown sample can be classified into a class using one or several decision functions in a successive manner. The classifier is applied to the analysis of data sensed by Landsat-1 over Kenosha Pass, Colorado. The classifier is illustrated by a tree diagram which for processing purposes is encoded as a string of symbols such that there is a unique one-to-one relationship between string and decision tree.

Exploration for porphyry copper deposits in Pakistan using digital processing of Landsat-1 data

Rock-type classification by digital-computer processing of Landsat-1 multispectral scanner data has been used to select 23 prospecting targets in the Chagai District, Pakistan, five of which have proved to be large areas of hydrothermally altered porphyry containing pyrite. Empirical maximum and minimum apparent reflectance limits were selected for each multispectral scanner band in each rock type classified, and a relatively unrefined classification table was prepared. Where the values for all four bands fitted within the limits designated for a particular class, a symbol for the presumed rock type was printed by the computer at the appropriate location. Drainage channels, areas of mineralized quartz diorite, areas of pyrite-rich rock, and the approximate limit of propylitic alteration were very well delineated on the computer-generated map of the test area. The classification method was used to evaluate 2,100 sq km in the Mashki Chah region. The results of the experiment show that outcrops of hydrothermally altered and mineralized rock can be identified from Landsat-1 data under favorable conditions.

Coding for a multiple-access channel

In a simple multiple-access communication system, two geographically separated users attempt to communicate binary data to two data sinks over a common channel called a multiple access channel. User one sends codewords from a block code C sub one, while user two sends codewords from a block code C sub two. The two users occupy the same frequency slot, transmit at the same time, and use the same type of modulation. Block codes which are uniquely decodable and capable of correcting errors are constructed for two multiple-access channel models. The first model is referred to as a noiseless multiple-access binary erasure channel. If the two transmitted bits from the two users are zeros, a zero is transmitted over the channel to the receiver; if the two transmitted bits are ones, a one is transmitted to the receiver; if the two bits are different, an erasure symbol is transmitted to the receiver. The second model is also a multiple-access binary erasure channel but with noise introduced.

A bandwidth-compressive modulation system

The phrase 'bandwidth-compressive modulation' means that the compression is achieved not by removing redundancy from the data (data compression), but rather by modulating the carrier phase and amplitude with blocks of data bits. The modulation described here is quadrature amplitude shift keying (QASK), a logical extension of quadrature phase shift keying, (QPSK, or quadriphase). QASK is a cost-effective form of combined phase-and-amplitude modulation. That is, n-bit QASK, like most phase-amplitude forms of modulation, requires considerably less transmitter power than comparably performing n-PSK, while among the class of all n-bit phase-modulation types, n-bit QASK performs nearly optimally but requires the least circuit complexity. A simple, unique microwave transmitter is described which provides high-rate QASK modulation with 4:1 bandwidth compression. A suppressed carrier multiple-loop QASK receiver provides the necessary phase tracking, automatic gain control (AGC), and symbol timing.

Partial correlation properties of pseudonoise /PN/ codes in noncoherent synchronization/detection schemes

This concise paper considers the effect on the autocorrelation function of a pseudonoise (PN) code when the acquisition scheme only integrates coherently over part of the code and then noncoherently combines these results. The peak-to-null ratio of the effective PN autocorrelation function is shown to degrade to the square root of n, where n is the number of PN symbols over which coherent integration takes place.

An MSK approach to offset QASK

This paper demonstrates that an offset quadrature amplitude-shift-keyed (OQASK) signal can be represented as an n-component version of a minimum-shift-keyed (MSK) signal. For example, the signal set obtained by summing two MSK signals which are 6 dB different in power and are formed by continuous phase, frequency modulating the same oscillator with two independent binary antipodal data streams, is spectrally equivalent to an OQASK signal set composed of 16 signals in which the symbol pulse is a half-cycle sinusoid rather than the conventional rectangular form. Such generalizations as the above allow for potentially simpler implementation of spectrally shaped OQASK.
