Method for forming hermetic seals

The firmly adherent film of bondable metal, such as silver, is applied to the surface of glass or other substrate by decomposing a layer of solution of a thermally decomposable metallo-organic deposition (MOD) compound such as silver neodecanoate in xylene. The MOD compound thermally decomposes into metal and gaseous by-products. Sealing is accomplished by depositing a layer of bonding metal, such as solder or a brazing alloy, on the metal film and then forming an assembly with another high melting point metal surface such as a layer of Kovar. When the assembly is heated above the temperature of the solder, the solder flows, wets the adjacent surfaces and forms a hermetic seal between the metal film and metal surface when the assembly cools.

Innovative Drug Selection, Storage, and Shelf-Life Strategies for Exploration Spaceflight

Medications have been a part of space travel dating back to the Apollo missions. A safe and effective medication formulary is essential to maintaining crew health and performance during long-duration spaceflight outside of low Earth orbit (LEO). Distance from Earth creates four key operational changes that increase medical risks, including communication, resupply, crewmember health, and evacuation. The current spaceflight pharmaceutical formulary consists of medications indicated to treat a variety of anticipated medical events and healthcare needs during spaceflight, but depends on a robust consumables resupply chain, which may be strained for a Lunar, and possibly non-existent for a Mars mission. The specific medications selections for the formulary may change to optimally align with the mission, crew compliment, and spacecraft design. Medical support at long-duration exploration missions will differ from LEO missions due to mission duration, lack of consumables resupply, prolonged exposure to space radiation, and the absence of emergency medical return capability. Loss of medication resupply limits or removes the ability to replace medications that have been exhausted or degraded, potentially exacerbating the medical risk posture. To address these anticipated risks, long-duration missions must consider use of novel medical technologies, treatment modalities, and smart medical systems that offer greater crew autonomy, such as physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling, drug repurposing, on demand drug synthesis, or wearable drug delivery / monitoring devices. Once an ideal formulary for exploration space is determined, it is essential to establish the chemical and physical stability of each medication compound, as well as its safety by identifying its degradation profiles and products. Although few studies have been conducted to provide evidence on the physicochemical stability of pharmaceuticals during space missions, the data suggests that the spaceflight environment may promote degradation in some pharmaceuticals. Formulary drug purity and efficacy should be verified by pharmaceutical stability assessments, and can be realized non-destructively, and accessed in remote environments. Non-destructive pharmaceutical analysis and statistical modelling techniques could optimize exploration spaceflight medical care by enabling early detection of suboptimal therapeutics. Likewise, novel packaging, storage strategies, and dosage form innovations are promising countermeasures to optimize pharmaceutical shelf life, purity, and quality of exploration spaceflight medications. As we prepare for more distant exploration missions, risk management planning for astronaut healthcare should include the assembly of a medication formulary that is comprehensive enough to prevent or treat anticipated medical events, remains safe and chemically stable, and retains sufficient potency to last for the duration of the mission. Following extensive review of the literature, we will present innovative formulary optimization strategies, pharmaceutical stability assessment techniques, and storage and packaging solutions that could enhance drug safety and efficacy for future exploration spaceflight missions.

A contorted nanographene shelter

Nanographenes have kindled considerable interest in the fields of materials science and supramolecular chemistry as a result of their unique self-assembling and optoelectronic properties. Encapsulating the contorted nanographenes inside artificial receptors, however, remains challenging. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a trigonal prismatic hexacationic cage, which has a large cavity and adopts a relatively flexible conformation. It serves as a receptor, not only for planar coronene, but also for contorted nanographene derivatives with diameters of approximately 15 Å and thicknesses of 7 Å. A comprehensive investigation of the host-guest interactions in the solid, solution and gaseous states by experimentation and theoretical calculations reveals collectively an induced-fit binding mechanism with high binding affinities between the cage and the nanographenes. Notably, the photostability of the nanographenes is improved significantly by the ultrafast deactivation of their excited states within the cage. Encapsulating the contorted nanographenes inside the cage provides a noncovalent strategy for regulating their photoreactivity.

Path planning for robotic truss assembly

A new Potential Fields approach to the robotic path planning problem is proposed and implemented. Our approach, which is based on one originally proposed by Munger, computes an incremental joint vector based upon attraction to a goal and repulsion from obstacles. By repetitively adding and computing these 'steps', it is hoped (but not guaranteed) that the robot will reach its goal. An attractive force exerted by the goal is found by solving for the the minimum norm solution to the linear Jacobian equation. A repulsive force between obstacles and the robot's links is used to avoid collisions. Its magnitude is inversely proportional to the distance. Together, these forces make the goal the global minimum potential point, but local minima can stop the robot from ever reaching that point. Our approach improves on a basic, potential field paradigm developed by Munger by using an active, adaptive field - what we will call a 'flexible' potential field. Active fields are stronger when objects move towards one another and weaker when they move apart. An adaptive field's strength is individually tailored to be just strong enough to avoid any collision. In addition to the local planner, a global planning algorithm helps the planner to avoid local field minima by providing subgoals. These subgoals are based on the obstacles which caused the local planner to fail. A best-first search algorithm A* is used for graph search.

Nonlinear analysis and vibro-impact characteristics of a shaft-bearing assembly

Here this study investigates the nonlinear frequency response of a shaft-bearing assembly with vibro-impacts occurring at the bearing clearances. The formation of nonlinear behavior as system parameters change is examined, along with the effects of asymmetries in the nominal, inherently symmetric system. The primary effect of increasing the forcing magnitude or decreasing the contact gap sizes is the formation of grazing-induced chaotic solution branches occurring over a wide frequency range near each system resonance. The system's nominal setup has very hard contact stiffness and shows no evidence of isolas or superharmonic resonances over the frequency ranges of interest. Moderate contact stiffnesses cause symmetry breaking and introduce superharmonic resonance branches of primary resonances. Even if some primary resonances are not present due to the system's inherent symmetry, their superharmonic resonances still manifest. Branches of quasiperiodic isolas (isolated resonance branches) are also discovered, along with a cloud of isolas near a high-frequency resonance. Parameter asymmetries are found to produce a few significant changes in behavior: asymmetric linear stiffness, contact stiffness, and gap size could affect the behavior of primary resonant frequencies and isolas.

Alignment of Au nanorods along de novo designed protein nanofibers studied with automated image analysis

In this paper, we focus on exploring the directional assembly of anisotropic Au nanorods along de novo designed 1D protein nanofiber templates. Using machine learning and automated image processing, we analyze scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images to study how the attachment density and alignment fidelity are influenced by variables such as the aspect ratio of the Au nanorods, and the salt concentration of the solution. We find that the Au nanorods prefer to align parallel to the protein nanofibers. This preference decreases with increasing salt concentration, but is only weakly sensitive to the nanorod aspect ratio. While the overall specific Au nanorod attachment density to the protein fibers increases with increasing solution ionic strength, this increase is dominated primarily by non-specific binding to the substrate background, and we find that greater specific attachment (nanorods attached to the nanofiber template as compared to the substrates) occurs at the lower studied salt concentrations, with the maximum ratio of specific to non-specific binding occurring when the protein fiber solutions are prepared in 75 mM NaCl concentration.

Since 1975 bar codes on products at the retail counter have been accepted as the standard for entering product identity for price determination. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the Data Matrix symbol has become accepted as the bar code format that is marked directly on a part, assembly or product that is durable enough to identify that item for its lifetime. NASA began the studies for direct part marking Data Matrix symbols on parts during the Return to Flight activities after the Challenger Accident. Over the 20 year period that has elapsed since Challenger, a mountain of studies, analyses and focused problem solutions developed by and for NASA have brought about world changing results. NASA Technical Standard 6002 and NASA Handbook 6003 for Direct Part Marking Data Matrix Symbols on Aerospace Parts have formed the basis for most other standards on part marking internationally. NASA and its commercial partners have developed numerous products and methods that addressed the difficulties of collecting part identification in aerospace operations. These products enabled the marking of Data Matrix symbols in virtually every situation and the reading of symbols at great distances, severe angles, under paint and in the dark without a light. Even unmarkable delicate parts now have a process to apply a chemical mixture, recently trademarked as Nanocodes, that can be converted to Data Matrix information through software. The accompanying intellectual property is protected by ten patents, several of which are licensed. Direct marking Data Matrix on NASA parts dramatically decreases data entry errors and the number of parts that go through their life cycle marked, two major threats to sound configuration management and flight safety. Robotic Specialization in Autonomous Robotic Structural Assembly

Robotic in-space assembly of large space structures is a long-term NASA goal to reduce launch costs and enable larger scale missions. Recently, researchers have proposed using discrete lattice building blocks and co-designed robots to build high-performance, scalable primary structure for various on-orbit and surface applications. These robots would locomote on the lattice and work in teams to build and reconfigure building-blocks into functional structure. However, the most reliable and efficient robotic system architecture, characterized by the number of different robotic 'species' and the allocation of functionality between species, is an open question. To address this problem, we decompose the robotic building-block assembly task into functional primitives and, in simulation, study the performance of the the variety of possible resulting architectures. For a set consisting of five process types (move self, move block, move friend, align bock, fasten block), we describe a method of feature space exploration and ranking based on energy and reliability cost functions. The solution space is enumerated, filtered for unique solutions, and evaluated against energy and reliability cost functions for various simulated build sizes. We find that a 2 species system, dividing the five mentioned process types between one unit cell transport robot and one fastening robot, results in the lowest energy cost system, at some cost to reliability. This system enables fastening functionality to occupy the build front while reducing the need for that functional mass to travel back and forth from a feed station. Because the details of a robot design affect the weighting and final allocation of functionality, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of changing mass allocations on architecture performance. Future systems with additional functionalities such as repair, inspection, and others may use this process to analyze and determine alternative robot architectures.

Development of a Turn Key Cryogenic Cooling Module for Space Flight Based on a Commercial Cryocooler

Commercial cryocoolers have significant price and lead time advantages over coolers built exclusively for the space market, but there are many challenges that must be overcome before using a COTS cooler for flight. The initial cost advantage is significantly narrowed by the cost of adapting the COTS cooler for flight. JPL is developing a “turnkey” cryogenic cooling solution based on a commercial cryocooler with the intention that it can become a standard product. The goal is to develop a complete, fully redundant cryogenic cooling solution based on the Thales 9310. The system includes the cooler, brackets to provide mounting and cooling, supporting structures, vibration isolation, thermal straps, thermal switches, and drive electronics. This paper discusses qualification of the various components for flight, including launch vibration and thermal performance testing, as well as a full up testing of the completed assembly.

Electrical and Elastic Properties of Individual Single-Layer Nb 4 C 3 T x MXene Flakes

2D carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are widely recognized for their exceptional promise for numerous applications. However, physical property measurements of their individual monolayers remain very limited despite their importance for revealing the intrinsic physical properties of MXenes. The first mechanical and electrical measurements of individual single-layer flakes of Nb 4 C 3 T x MXene, which are prepared via an improved synthetic method are reported. Characterization of field-effect transistor devices based on individual single-layer Nb 4 C 3 T x flakes shows an electrical conductivity of 1024 ± 165 S cm -1 , which is two orders of magnitude higher than the previously reported values for bulk Nb 4 C 3 T x assemblies, and an electron mobility of 0.41 ± 0.27 cm 2 V -1 s -1 . Atomic force microscopy nanoindentation measurements of monolayer Nb 4 C 3 T x membranes yield an effective Young's modulus of 386 ± 13 GPa, assuming a membrane thickness of 1.26 nm. This is the highest value reported for nanoindentation measurements of solution-processable 2D materials, revealing the potential of Nb 4 C 3 T x as a primary component for various mechanical applications. In conclusion, the agreement between the mechanical properties of 2D Nb 4 C 3 T x MXene and cubic NbC suggests that the extensive experimental data on bulk carbides could be useful for identifying new MXenes with improved functional characteristics.

Towards predictive control of reversible nanoparticle assembly with solid-binding proteins

Although a broad range of ligand-functionalized nanoparticles and physico-chemical triggers have been exploited to create stimuli-responsive colloidal systems, little attention has been paid to the reversible assembly of unmodified nanoparticles with non-covalently bound proteins. Previously, we reported that a derivative of green fluorescent protein engineered with oppositely located silica-binding peptides mediates the repeated assembly and disassembly of 10-nm silica nanoparticles when pH is toggled between 7.5 and 8.5. We captured the subtle interplay between interparticle electrostatic repulsion and their protein-mediated short-range attraction with a multiscale model energetically benchmarked to collective system behavior captured by scattering experiments. Here, in this work, we show that both solution conditions (pH and ionic strength) and protein engineering (sequence and position of engineered silica-binding peptides) provide pathways for reversible control over growth and fragmentation, leading to clusters ranging in size from 25 nm protein-coated particles to micrometer-size aggregate. We further find that the higher electrolyte environment associated with successive cycles of base addition eventually eliminates reversibility. Our model accurately predicts these multiple length scales phenomena. The underpinning concepts provide design principles for the dynamic control of other protein- and particle-based nanocomposites.
